Research Essay After nearly one hundred years since its publication, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby continues to be critically acclaimed as the Great American Novel, with millions of copies being sold annually. Fitzgerald’s slim novel perfectly encapsulates the highly sought-after American Dream in a way that hadn’t been written before in the era of its publication. The story of greed, envy, jealousy, and wealth implores readers to re-read and decipher its deeper-meanings, and serves as a worthy contender for the title of the Great American Novel. Fitzgerald began his novel in his late twenties, pouring his heart and soul into the soon-to-be masterpiece. Finally, after numerous revisions and edits, Fitzgerald’s third novel was …show more content…
Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing his third novel to be a failure. He received $13.13 in his last royalty check, and “remaindered copies of the second printing of The Great Gatsby were moldering away in [publisher] Scribner's warehouse.” (How ‘Gatsby’). However, Fitzgerald’s death sparked an interest in his work again. And although his literary friends tried to revive Fitzgerald’s name, the real rejuvenation of The Great Gatsby occurred during WWII. Wanting to sustain the country’s morale, the United States assembled a program that would send “Armed Services Editions” of books to soldiers fighting overseas. Fitzgerald’s third novel was chosen to be one of these books, resulting in the distribution of nearly 125,000 copies. Over one million soldiers read The Great Gatsby, and a new appreciation for the novel had been found. Fitzgerald’s name and his third novel had been revived. By the 1960s, The Great Gatsby had been printed for high school classrooms. Today, four screen adaptation of the novel have been created. (Churchwell). This serves as great evidence that The Great Gatsby is truly a great …show more content…
Every single word, phrase, and sentence has significant meaning in the story, allowing readers to uncover more of the story by making inferences and reading in-between the lines. Fitzgerald also carefully structured each of the nine chapters in the book. For example, every single chapter in the novel, is focused on a party. From the meet-up at the Buchanan residence in the first chapter, to Gatsby’s massive party in the third, to the hotel showdown in the seventh, and finally Gatsby’s funeral in the last, the focus of every chapter is a party. However, Fitzgerald went deeper than the structure of chapters. He went as far as to provide common themes and symbolisms between every character. Maureen Corrigan believes that “with the exception of Daisy (the femme fatale), every major character in the novel is stretching out their arms for someone or something that’s out of their reach.” (Achenbach). Evidence from the text suggests this to be true; with examples including: Daisy for Gatsby, Tom for Mertyle, and Gatsby for Nick. The intricate weaving of The Great Gatsby proves as evidence of Fitzgerald’s hard work to make his third novel a true masterpiece, and also provides as a perfect reason to why Gatsby is one of the best American books ever

...Opinions, Changes When The Great Gatsby is first introduced, the narrator, Nick, describes how his dad once told him, "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all people in this world haven't had the advantages you've had” (Fitzgerald). He then goes on to say as a consequence, he's "inclined to reserve all judgments” (Fitzgerald). This is rather ironic due to the entire novel consisting of many opinionated views and comments from the viewpoint of Nick, toward others, especially toward Jay Gatsby. Throughout the novel Nick has positive and negative thoughts toward Gatsby and seems unsure of his overall opinion of him. His is continuously indecisive and contradictive. Eventually however, his mind is set, that Gatsby is actually a down to earth, fine young man, seeking for his righteousness to be seen. Nick sets the scene by telling the story of how he had moved to New York "in the spring of twenty-two” (Fitzgerald), and had accepted an offer to share a house with a man in the office. He describes how he decided to "go east and learn the bond business” (Fitzgerald), and how his father had agreed to finance him for a year. Nick’s pretentious West Egg house is next door to Gatsby’s eyesore mansion. Nick is clearly unlike his West Egg neighbors, Gatsby included, where they lack many social connections; Nick is from Yale and has many. When Nick first describes the 'hero of the story,’ Gatsby, he makes his opinion of Gatsby very clear. Gatsby states how he wanted "no...

...Independent Reading Project “The Great Gatsby” The Great Gatsby is a story about a man named Jay Gatsby who transformed his life from poor to rich. He believed in the American Dream; the dream that hard work equals success. This is especially apparent during his conquest for Daisy, a woman who Gatsby met while stationed at Camp Taylor during which he was an army officer. She soon married a man named Tom Buchanan; however, this doesn’t change the love that Gatsby still had for her. The story takes place in 1922 in the city, West Egg after the narrator, Nick Carraway, moves there to “learn the bond business”(Fitzgerald, 2008, p. 2). He also meets with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom Buchanan, to have dinner with them(Fitzgerald,...

...plays, despite its appalling ending. Authors have made it a point to sell tragedy in order to make money. However, my perspective on that opinion has been changed. I read The Great Gatsby during my sophomore year in high school as a part of an American literature class. By the end of the book, I realized that no matter what happens in life, it will still keep going and I should only have to look at the optimistic part of it. For some reason, I felt sympathy for Gatsby,...

What Does Yellow Symbolize In The Great Gatsby

...Ashley Craig Mrs. Olivier English II Pd.4 3/21/16 For my research paper the question I settled on was: How does Fitzgerald use symbolism concerning the American dream? Fitzgerald uses personification and the colors: green, red, white, yellow, blue, grey, and purple to symbolize the truth and principles within and about the American dream. The colors mentioned the most and used to enforce a greater meaning in the Great Gatsby are: green, yellow, red, blue, grey and white. Each color is a crucial detail in the book relating to intentions and foreboding. Throughout the history of literature colors have been used as motif. *add quote about color motifs in literature* Red commonly means power, danger, passion and love. Yellow is associated...

Interpretation of the American Dream in the Jungle, the Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman

...underwent large scale change and by the start of the twentieth century was one of the richest nations in the world. By 1950 the U.S.A. was the richest country in the world and a superpower. The state was not the only thing to change during this period. From the late-nineteenth century up to the 1920s average Americans experienced a dramatic expansion in wealth and prosperity. However, with the Wall Street Crash in 1929 the U.S.A. experienced an economic depression that destroyed millions of livelihoods. This eventful period of American history led many to question the American Dreams place in modern America. This research paper will examine the interpretation of the American Dream in literature between the Progressive Era at the start of the twentieth century and the 1950s economic and social boom. In order to do this the paper will examine the novels The Jungle, The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. These three novels all examine the American Dream in different decades. Written in 1906 by Upton Sinclair The Jungle is a novel that portrayed the life of immigrants and the working class in early-twentieth century America. The novel was published during the muckraking decade and its depiction of poverty, unpleasant living and working conditions and the corruption of those in power led it to be called “the Uncle Tom’s Cabin of wage slavery.” A socialist Sinclair believed that by the start of the twentieth...

Gatsby Research Paper

...Jason Lepeska Lippincott English III GT/AP-4 17 January 2013 Research Paper The Great Gatsby was a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, and has motifs of class separation, the hollowness of the upper class, and the decline of the visions of America. The setting is New York City in the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway moves to New York in hopes of finding a job there. Nick has connections in this town, like his cousin daisy, and her husband, Tom. He moves into a home next to a wealthy Jay Gatsby, an extravagant man who loves throwing ridiculous parties. As the summer progresses, Nick finally gets invited to one of these parties, where he learns Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Nick helps set up Daisy and Gatsby, and they start spending time together. Tom gets angry and ends up driving Gatsby to his unfortunate demise. While a Feminist reading provides insight into the novel, Fitzgerald’s emphasis on the separated classes system and the materialistic beliefs of the upper class demonstrates that a Marxist approach to the novel is of more use. Feminism criticizes the patriarchal language used in novels, and how that reflects the masculinity in the novel (“Feminist Criticism”). Feminism also analyzes how status and positions in the novel relate to the contrasting man and woman. It recognizes more traditional writing, like mailman. Men tend to work towards solutions, while women work towards connecting and feelings (“Feminist Criticism”). It is exemplified in the book...

This is an important conclusion to come to because it can open one’s mind to think about something while they read many different texts and helps people relate the texts in different ways. Roozen also talks a lot about Lindsey and her editing process while she was writing her paper. She hand writes a lot of outlines and takes a bunch of detailed notes on her writing in order to make it better. Roozen’s quote was helpful to her while writing her paper because through all of her research she could take symbols that she found in all the texts she read and relate them. It is an important way of thinking while reading things so one can write a more enriched paper. The Life of Fitzgerald

...Research Paper: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald [pic] Lovely Louis and Abigail Saint – Juste English 1 Ms. M. Jeanty November 26, 2007 In the early jazzy years, there was a small restaurant where people were dancing to a new jazz number. They were laughing, eating, chatting, and enjoying themselves. In the mist of all the laughter, there sat a man in a dark corner writing vigorously. His name was Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. He was an American author of novels and many short stories. He was also recognized as one of the greatest authors in the twentieth century. Fitzgerald’s Early Years Francis Scott K. Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896. He was named after his famous distant cousin Francis Scott Key, who was the author of the National Anthem. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, and his mother were both Catholic and of Irish descent. However they both came from different societies. Fitzgerald’s mother came from a background where money was everything, such as: position and stability. And his father came from a background where discipline was the most importance. As a result all the attitudes and manners that were established in Fitzgerald’s character came from his father and all the concerns of stability in the society came from his mother. Between the years of 1898-1901 and 1903- 1908 he lived in Buffalo, New York. And this is when he attended Nardin Academy. However when his father was fired from his job, his family...

Overall, the writer’s research on Scott Fitzgerald’s novels is poor and doesn’t address the thesis. Thesis A thesis is a statement or a theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved (Dictionary.com). In this case the thesis is persuasive because the writer chooses one quality of Scott Fitzgerald writing over others that could also describe his writing as the most obviously notable quality. The purpose of the document is to convince the audience that the thesis is a correct statement. In order to convince the audience, the writer needs to provide information that is representative of the claim about the topic (p.358). The thesis suggests that “the biographical element in Fitzgerald’s writing is one of the most obviously notable qualities about his novels”. To prove the statement correct, the writer needs to provide information about Fitzgerald’s novels in relation with his life. In the document only one novel is cited, The Great Gatsby, but there is no specific information about how the novel is related to Fitzgerald’s biography. Although there is little information about Fitzgerald work as a writer, there is a considerable amount...
