In the Tales of The Grim Sleeper, there were multiple sociological topics shown that we have learned in class. The major topics that were shown were corruption in the justice system, deviance, and racial inequalities. This documentary focuses on the life and crimes of Lonnie David Franklin Jr, The Grim Sleeper. In Los Angeles, California poverty was everywhere you looked as well were drugs. There were prostitutes on every corner not to mention people openly smoking crack cocaine on the sides of the roads. In Los Angeles less than 50% of high school students will graduate and at least ⅓ of black men will receive a felony conviction at some point in their life. Pam Brooks, a retired prostitute, rode around with the film crew and gave them information and helped them get information from the other prostitutes. Pam helped them get stories from some of the girls about Lonnie and the things he would do to them. One of Lonnie’s victims was Lili, his son’s babysitter. She talked about how he would give her crack cocaine and then do terrible things to her. She never reported the abuse to the police because of her addiction and she knew they wouldn’t do anything about it. It is believed that Lonnie hates women because of his first wife, who was addicted to crack cocaine. None of Lonnie’s friends wanted to believe he was capable of doing such horrific things until they started talking about what they had either done for him or things he showed them.
