...Marlene Zinnah December 11, 2013 ENG 205 Prof: Tara Lesko Heroes have been dominant characters who sacrifice themselves for others in order to teach a lesson. The major theme is the triumph of goodness over evil. Beowulf and King Arthur, the epic heroes of grand tales, stand out for all that is good, brave and proper, while the villains stand for evil. However during the course of the stories the two heroes die tragically in a triumphant battle over vice and evil the course of the tale. The characters only perish after the evil is vanquished and destroyed. Sir Thomas Mallory brings forth a courageous character King Arthur, utilizing weaponry and leadership, to enlighten the kingdom of the unique characteristics of a true hero While Beowulf depicts the Anglo-Saxon era to tell a story of one who fights to better society. It is a known fact that heroes over time and overseas all heroes have something in common; which is true in the case of King Arthur and Beowulf. It is obvious that they are similar in the fact that they are both heroes, but what makes them an idol of their time and in their culture are poles apart. There are many things that are different about Beowulf and King Arthur, but the ones that stand out the most are what kind of hero they are and what actions they did to make them heroic. Both heroes possess qualities that others do not have, but it is what they do with those abilities that prompts someone to write a story about them and idolize them in time. ...

...The concept of ‘cut-offs’ almost exclusively been dealt with as a form of repair (Jaspersen 1998, Schegloff 1977) where we find ‘a compression or foreshortening of words (or syllables) in ongoing talk’ in order to attend to a trouble source (Local &; Walker. 2004. 1394). What the literature lacks, however, is an observation of such forms that do not attempt to’ repair’ any notion of linguistic trouble. Such instances of these ‘cut-offs’ are evident in the language, and also appear to share common contextual and sequential properties. When we claim that something is an instance of repair we mean that speakers are adhering to ‘problems in speaking, hearing and understanding’ within the conversation (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Importantly, however, it must be acknowledged that repair can appear without an overtly observable ‘error’. (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Laasko and Sorjonen claim that ‘cutting off’ is a form of self-repair that features within an ongoing turn-constructional unit and as a result ‘the utterance is heard as prosodically discontinuous and incomplete’(2010). In most cases speakers cut off a word in progress, although alternatively the speaker may cut off after the completion of a word. One of the ways we find non-repair cut offs are those that acknowledge ‘topic-external factors’. These include disjunctional observations or subjects that are disconnected from the topic and most often linked to contextual issues or...

...SYNECDOCHE IN TRUE MIDWEST FASHION, Bloomingtonians aren't unfriendly but do tend to be reserved. A stranger will smile warmly at you, but there normally won't be any of that strangerly chitchat in waiting areas or checkout lines. But now there's something to talk about that outweighs all reserve, like we were somehow all standing right there and just saw the same traffic accident. E.g., overheard in the checkout line at Burwell's (which is sort of the Neiman Marcus of gas station/convenience store plazas -- centrally located athwart both one-way main drags, and with the best tobacco prices in town, it's a municipal treasure) between a lady in an osco cashier's smock and a man in a dungaree jacket cut off at the shoulders to make a sort of homemade vest: "With my boys they thought it was all some movie like that Independence Day til then after a while they started to notice it was the same movie on all the channels." (The lady didn't say how old her boys were.) WEDNESDAY BEVERYBODY HAS flags out. Homes, businesses. It's odd: You never see anybody putting out a flag, but by Wednesday morning there they all are. Big flags, small flags, regularflag-size flags. A lot of homeowners here have those special angled flagholders by their front door, the kind whose brace takes four Phillips screws. And thousands of those little hand-held flags-on-a-stick you normally sec at parades -- some yards have dozens all over as if they'd somehow sprouted overnight. Rural-road people...
