After years of dating Moushumi and Gogol marry. The two decide to stay in New York, and despite both of their enjoyment of their marriage, Gogol’s insecurities begin to emerge out of the comfort. He fears that he is a mere “backup” to Graham her ex fiancé a wealthy American banker. When the two travels to Paris their differences are really illustrated and Moushumi becomes increasingly petulant and expresses her dissatisfaction about her life and nostalgia for her life back in Paris. When they return home to New York, the situation intensifies when Gogol becomes frustrated with Moushumi’s friends and daily habits. They become more distant with each other and hardly converse. When he reveals the meaning of his own name, and it is unappreciated and laughed at by Moushumi and her friends, Gogol also begins to see how different him and his wife’s values are.
