According to Zelman (2011), “two thirds of US adults are overweight or obese”. That staggering statistic drives an insatiable appetite for solutions, preferable one that is easy and quick. In the 1950s, Dr. A.T. W. Simeons, a British endocrinologist, discovered some effects that HCG was having on obese patients. Simeons started experimenting with levels or HCG injections and low calorie diets to see if obese patients would lose weight. The doctor discovered that his patients were experiencing a rapid weight loss of the likes he has never seen before. Dr. Simeon concluded that HCG and a 500 calorie diet have a success at rapid weight loss (Dual fit, 2012).

The so called HCG diet is either a weight loss miracle or a dangerous fraud, depending on who’s talking (Haupt, 2011). “These products are marketed with incredible claims and people think that if they are losing weight, HCG must be working,” says Elizabeth Miller, acting director of FDAs Division of non-prescription drugs and health fraud (Hellmich, 2011) Supporters of the diet say it leads to rapid weight loss and controlled hunger. People who back the diet also say it has the ability to target fat in certain parts of the body, including the stomach, hips, thighs, and upper arms. Advocates say that it does not cause weakness or loss of energy (WebMD, 2012).Despite testimonies from those who claim that the HCG has worked for them, there is still controversial surrounding the diet plan. The question that remain in many professional minds are, is it safe and effective in promoting weight loss (Zelman, 2012).
The controversial over the use of the HCG diet for weight loss stems from
