Greek civilization is credited with giving the world the method for today’s popular movies and books. This formula is in Suzanne Collin’s novel “The Hunger Games,” the story of Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District Twelve in post-apocalyptic earth, who faces many trials and terrors when she is sent to participate in the annual Hunger Games. The formula, also known as The Hero’s Journey, is seen all throughout this story. The method begins with ‘The Call,’ or when something calls the main character to make the journey or quest that he or she is about to go on. In this novel, Katniss, who possesses a great ability to hunt, is called when representatives from the capitol of her world come to her district for the annual reaping, or when two people are chosen from each district to participate as ‘tributes’ in the Hunger Games. Things seem to go as normal, but when Katniss’s younger sister Prim is chosen; she does something that had never been done before and volunteers herself to go in her sister’s place. She is chosen to go alongside the son of District Twelve’s bakers, Peeta Mellark. After the reaping, she and Peeta are sent to the capitol, where they are prepared to face the capitol, and then the Hunger Games. Katniss then goes into the phase of the formula called ‘The Preperation.’ She and Peeta are both given Prep Teams who dress them up to help them get sponsors. After going through various steps of preparation, Katniss and Peeta are finally sent to the arena where the Hunger Games take place. Once in the arena, Katniss takes off by herself and tries to figure out a way to survive. She faces many tests, including a large forest fire when she is near the edge of the forest, other tributes (including Peeta), and things such as hunger, thirst, and illness. Many of these things nearly cause Katniss to die, but she manges to escape from them. Her road of trials and tribulations leads her to make a few allies in the Games. She forms an alliance with Rue, the little girl tribute from District Eleven, and the two of them set up some traps for some of the tributes. Later on however, Rue is killed by another tribute, which leaves Katniss alone again. She continues on alone until an announcement is made saying that the rules of the game have changed allowing two winners from the same district, she than goes on a quest to find Peeta again and they form an alliance that lasts through the rest of the games.
As Katniss and Peeta continue on through the Games, they find a cave down a stream and set up a temporary camp there. They found a place that the other tributes are not able to find. After Rue’s death and Peeta’s injuries, Katniss finds herself debating on whether or not to give up. After thinking and talking to Peeta, and receiving a special medicine to heal Peeta, Katniss finds her saving experience, or resurrection, and decides not to give up. Peeta and Katniss form a plan to help them win the Hunger Games. They travel to a place called the Cornucopia, where they both fight their last battle against the remaining tributes and monsters. After the fight is over they are told that the rules have changed again and that only one of them can be the victor, but neither one of them is willing to kill each other, so they both attempt to commit suicide by eating poisonous berries. Before they can eat them, an announcer declares them both winners and takes them out of the arena. The Hunger Games are finally over, Katniss is able to get cleaned up and finally return home to her mother and sister.
The Hero’s Journey is an ancient Greek method that plays a large role in popular movies and books today. Katniss from the novel “The Hunger Games” is an example of this and shows how a hero in a novel progresses from the call to the return.

...A Hero’s Journey: Hamlet and Simba What images come to mind as you reflect on your childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards, and soccer balls may be among the warmest of memories. Yet for many mermaids swim their thoughts, princesses get swept of their feet, and lions roar to their loyal place in the animal kingdom. There is no doubt that today’s entertainment has most of its touch using classical influences. Walt Disney has produced animated films that have captured the heart and imagination of audiences of all ages around the world through the magic of storytelling and imagery. Many of us appreciate the imagination and magic that Disney puts into its animations with out knowing they are based off of classical and traditional storylines that have been around for many years. For example the Disney movie The Lion King that is based off of the classical Shakespeare play Hamlet. The Lion King is possibly the most well known movie of the Disney collection that portrays a strong moral to its viewers. The journey that is taken by the characters in this movie is one from innocence to experience through confronting challenging situations. Just how Disney uses magic and imagination to capture its audience William Shakespeare also captured the hearts of people everywhere through the representation of emotions and feeling in his plays. Hamlet is without a question one of the most famous play in English literature. Through Hamlet Shakespeare shows a brilliant depiction of the hero’s struggle...

The Hero's Journey

...The Hero’s Journey is followed throughout Doris Lessing’s “Through the Tunnel” with the three elements of the threshold guardian, the trials and enemies, and the ordeal. To begin, the story starts out with Jerry finding and going to the wild bay. Then he meets some local boys who dive into the water and swim through a underwater cave. He tries to follow, “Down he went, until he touched the wall of the rock again. But the salt was so painful in his eyes that he could not see.” (p.3, lines 14-15). The threshold guardian is something that is preventing the hero from entering the special world (which in this case is the wild bay/underwater cave). This quote demonstrates the threshold guardian element because it creates a physical barrier between...

A Hero's Journey

...A Hero’s Journey Joseph Campbell describes the 17 stages that occur during a hero’s journey, also known as Monomyth. The Odyssey by Homer is a story based on Ulysses and his journey, I will be describing the stages of Monomyth based on Campbell’s ideas. These stages will focus on Ulysses and his son Telemachus. According to Joseph Campbell, a hero’s journey normally entails three phases; the departure, the initiation, and the return. (Wikipedia) The first phase is the departure phase, which consists of three stages; the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, and supernatural aid. The call to adventure, is when the hero is in a “mundane situation of normality from which some information is received that acts as a call to head off into the unknown.” (Wikipedia) Ulysses call to adventure began when he accepted to lead his men and go to troy and fight against King Priam. This is considered an adventure because it was something different, it took him away to the unknown, and it tested his courage. This was also Ulysses’ first step into the start of his journey. The second stage is refusal of the call, this happens when the hero does not want to go on the journey. Ulysses was in Ithica with his wife and newborn son, when he got the call to go to Troy. Ulysses did not want to leave his son behind or wife but had no choice, this could be seen as him refusing to go to Troy. The third stage is receiving supernatural aid, one of the examples of this stage is when Miverva appears...

...Counselor as Companion on the Hero’s Journey The story of the hero’s journey has been told and retold in oral and literary traditions for centuries. The hero motif captures the strength and perseverance of the human spirit of men and women so elegantly that it has not been bound by either culture or religious tradition (J. Campbell, 1949). In this article a counselor discusses his experiences while working with a male client named Steve. Steve’s story is very inspiring to everyone. His story shows us that we should believe in ourselves. This story has touched me and I believe people can learn from it. I believe the counselor learned many things from Steve. The first thing I believe that the counselor learned from Steve is that believing in yourself is the strongest belief you can have. If you don’t believe in yourself no one will. Also no one can change you or what you want or believe in. The counselor also learned that some people have a lot of hope; and with that hope people can do anything. Another thing that the counselor learned was that setting small goals is better for a person to do. It may seem hard and take more time, but you can still accomplish your goals and maybe more. The counselor’s behavior may have changed as a result of working with Steve. The counselor may have doubt in Steve also, feeling like he did have limitations as the other doctors were telling him. Another thing that may change as a result of working with Steve may be that the counselor treated...

Hero's Journey

...defined by their past, but instead, what and who they find within themselves in a dire moment of need. There is a hero in everyone. Most people just need the right time and the courage to bring out their inner hero. The writer and philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote about the stages each hero goes through in their journey in a book called, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In Finding Nemo, there is tragedy before there is hope. There is also comedy, adventure and suspense to keep the viewer on their feet. Marlin, a clown fish father and the hero, embarks on a journey to find his son, Nemo. Marlin’s wife dies protecting Nemo and his siblings when they are still eggs and are being attacked by an eel who is trying to eat them. After the attack, Nemo is the only egg left. Nemo survives, but is injured, which leaves him with a gimp fin. This leaves the excited and adventurous Marlin a very scared and timid clownfish. When Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, Marlin must swim from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney, Australia to save him. Marlin will find the hero within himself and act fast to save Nemo while also allowing him to learn and grow without sheltering him too much. The hero’s ordinary world consists of Marlin and his son Nemo, confined to the safety and protection of the ocean by their sea anemone. Although this may seem uncommon, in real life, this is a very common relationship between clownfish and anemone. Without the anemone, clownfish usually become prey to bigger predator fish...

The Hero's Journey

...Christian Lescznske Professor Larkin ELIT2055-B 31 March 2014 The Hero’s Journey: Comparing and Contrasting Heroes Joseph Campbell was an American psychologist and mythological researcher. In his lifelong research, Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world. Years of research lead Campbell to discover several basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter what culture the myth is a part of). He calls this common structure “the monomyth” (Hero’s Journey). The “hero’s journey” appears in drama, storytelling, myth, religious ritual, and psychological development. It describes the typical adventure of The Hero, who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the family, group, tribe, or civilization. There are twelve steps, or stages, of the typical “Hero’s Journey”. The twelve steps are: The ordinary world, the call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor, crossing the threshold, a test, the approach, the ordeal, the reward, the road back, the resurrection, and the return with the elixir, or reward. As I previously stated, Campbell’s monomyth works best with the traditional form of the quest such as in folk and fairy tales, myths, legends, and other fantasies. However, it can be applied to many different genres or types of stories. A quest does not have to include swords and monsters. It can just as easily occur in the real world. The monomyth is ageless and universal...
