Impact on Nursing of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the future of nursing.
There are over three million nursing professional in United States and they make the largest segment of nation’s health care workforce. Nurses can play a vital role in helping to realize the objectives set forth in the 2010 affordable act, legislation that represents the broadest health care overhaul since the 1965 creation of Medicare and Medicaid program (IOM 2010). Due to the restricting barriers nurses were not able to respond effectively to the changing health care systems. In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and IOM launched a two year initiative to respond to the need to access and transform the nursing profession. The IOM appointed a committee with the purpose of producing a report that would wake recommendations for an action oriented blue print for the future of nursing. This paper will explore the impact of the report on Nursing education, Nursing Practice particularly in primary care, nursing role as a leader and changing my practice to meet the goals of IOM report.
Impact on Nursing Education.
Key message: “Nurse should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promote seemless academic progression” (IOM 2010 page 163}. The primary goal remains to meet the health care needs of diverse patients, and make sure safe and quality care is delivered. Two third of the entry level nurses begin their carrier with associate degree or diploma rather than a Bachelor Degree Nurse (BSN), relatively small percentage pursue further education, few achieve Doctoral Degree which is a requirement for faculty position (joint and Kimball 2008).In 2008 50,000
