The Imperative Automatic Functions Of Sleep

It is routinely theorised that one of our most imperative automatic functions, sleep, has two prime purposes: restoring our bodies and minds, allowing us to rest and absorb the information that we have processed throughout our day, and aiding us in our continued survival, allowing us to be awake, alert, and able to avoid and survive potential threats. The first of these subcategories, Restoration theories, deals with such topics as reprogramming, problem solving, and wish fulfilment, and how they pertain to the refreshment of our mental and physical faculties.
The first of these concepts, aptly named Restoration Theory, postulated by Oswald (1966), states that sleep is used primarily for bodily repair and the repletion of our energy reserves,

...other living things) would be unable to function or live. And with the brain comes the various areas that control functions within it, including the medulla oblongata. In basic terms it works the “automatic processes” such as “breathing, blood circulation, swallowing, blinking, etc.” (notes). If the medulla did not exist, neither would we because it controls main methods of surviving. I feel the medulla is part of the most essential pieces in the brain and support this by identifying its role in more depth, explaining where it is located and its general shape, and also clarifying the functions and malfunctions that can occur with it. As explained, I feel the medulla is highly important. It allows living things (that have a developed brain) to survive. In a Wikipedia excerpt on the medulla oblongata it describes how the medulla itself is connected to the “lower half of the brain stem which is continuous with the spinal cord” and it runs from the spinal cord to the pons (Wikipedia). The pons “include sensory roles in hearing, equilibrium, and taste, and in facial sensations, as well as motor roles in eye movement, facial expressions, chewing, swallowing, and the secretion of saliva and tears” (Wikipedia). These are other important survival needs for living creates, such as humans. And the spinal cord allows both these functions and the medulla’s automatic processes to be transferred and completed through the nervous system. Being termed automatic also indicates the significance of...

Behavioral Therapy And ADHD Analysis

...The focus for cognitive therapy is to identify thinking patterns that may negatively affect functioning and therefore therapeutic work is aimed at changing maladaptive thoughts and assumptions. The major techniques that are used in cognitive-behavioral therapy is the restructuring of cognitive and psychoeducation. The process of psychoeducation is educating the parent and the child on how cognitive-behavioral therapy is beneficial. Coupled with that, it teaches the symptoms of ADHD. Moreover, the main focus of cognitive restructuring is to shift the way the child think about their problems and themselves. The many methods for restructuring are as follow: recording automatic thoughts, helping the adolescent to identify cognitive errors, reframing problems, and examining the evidence for and against automatic thoughts (Antshel, & Olszewski,...

System Hardening and Child’s Facebook Account

...Apple MacBook computing system. Although I myself do not use a MacBook I recently had the opportunity to harden my daughters newly won MacBook within the timeframe of this course. In the Information Technology (IT) world hardening is a term that describes the process of configuring a system so that it is secure, for the purposes of preventing unauthorized access, providing protection from malware and maintaining integrity, security and privacy of personal or proprietary data. This paper will also describe methods for setting up and securing a child’s first Facebook account. Wireless Access Point Hardening Once our MacBook has been hardened, the next step should be connecting to the Internet through a Wireless Access Point (WAP), a function that is available through a wireless router, provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) or self-purchased. A wired connection would be more secure but, as a matter of functionality with a laptop it is more practical to configuring and utilize a wireless connection. The default service set identifier (SSID), which is basically the name of the WAP, will probably be set at the default of the name and model of the router. For security purposes the SSID should be changed to something unique and set to not broadcast this information. This increases the difficulty for any nearby threats scanning for and gaining access to your WAP for free internet or worse, using it as a gateway to try and access any systems connected to it. ...Jacklyn Marcus, Ph.D 2225 Broadway Suite B Santa Monica, CA 90404 310-714-8809 Unrealistic and Unspoken Expectations Harm Relationships By Jacklyn Marcus, Ph,D Certified Life Skills Coach We all create expectations for ourselves. It is a basic human trait to project our desires and thoughts onto those we are closest to. We tend to expect significant people in our lives to behave in a manner envisioned in our mind. Expectations in relationships can be harmful when unspoken ideals are projected onto the other person. Unspoken assumptions and unrealistic expectations commonly sabotage relationships. How many times have your feelings been hurt because you mistakenly assumed someone else knew what you thought or expected? Do you ever become annoyed or angry with someone who acted differently than you expected? Have you found yourself saying: “If you really loved me, you would…” “Why didn‟t you…” “You should…” It doesn‟t matter what kind of relationship you are in. Each person‟s expectations plays a large part in determining the health of the relationship. Perceptions of a relationship change when there is a contrast between the ideal and the real. The partnership strengthens when one begins to see the relationship for what it really is. Having unrealistic or unfulfilled expectations is a sure way to ruin a relationship. When an individual has a strong desire that their partner meet their impossible expectations they become blinded...

Wgu Professional Roles & Values Project

...A. Functional Differences The California Board of Registered Nursing is the governing agency that is responsible for overseeing the profession of nursing. According to their website, the BRN protects consumers by doing the following; setting educational standards for and approving nursing programs, evaluating licensing by making sure that applicants have completed the required schooling and passed the examination, and making sure that applicants are eligible by requiring a background check (BRN, 2015). The California BRN is in charge of making sure that all registered nurses are up to par with their requirements. One way that this is done is that when the time comes to renew your license, you must provide evidence of continuing education. The education must come from a board approved education program and one must have the equivalent of 30 hours of continuing education (BRN, 2015). The California Board of Nursing licensing process is not voluntary. If you are going to be a licensed professional nurse in this state, one must go through the processes that are set forth by the BRN. Professional nursing organizations on the other hand are voluntary. A registered nurse may choose to belong to one, many or none of these. The numbers of professional nursing organizations are as vast as the specialties that nursing offers. The organization that I will discuss is the Emergency Nurses Association, also known as ENA. “Originally aimed at teaching and networking, the organization has...

Congestive Heart Failure

...Congestive Heart Failure Armi Gonzales Western Governors University Congestive Heart Failure A. Investigated Disease Process Congestive Heart Failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump a sufficient amount of blood for the body to function. If the heart’s ability to pump blood decreases, blood and fluids may start to pool into the lungs and accumulate in the legs, ankles, and feet causing an edema, shortness of breath, and fatigue. (Heart Failure, 2015, para. 2) The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology defines heart failure as “a complex clinical syndrome that can result from any structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of the ventricles to fill with or eject blood” (King, Kingery, & Casey, 2012, p. 1). Heart failure can be seen as a widespread disease, affecting around five million Americans. (Titler et al. n.d.) It is a chronic condition that is disabling and costly and common to our aging population. With the advancement in therapy and early diagnosis, survival increases from previously fatal acute cardiac events to patients feeling better and living longer. Millions of Americans living with heart failure are 65 years of age or older. (Roger et al, 2004) A1. Pathophysiology The Circulatory system focuses on the heart, a muscular organ that pumps blood through a complex network of blood vessels throughout the body. Blood that is pumped from the heart carries oxygen and nutrients that fuel...

...Title: Mass and Individual Communication for Greater Population Awareness and Receptiveness of Natural/Alternative Methods of Medicine (8th August 2010) Mass and Individual Communication for Greater Population Awareness and Receptiveness of Natural/Alternative Methods of Medicine 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND 2.0 MIND BODY CONNECTION 3.0 HEALTH COMMUNICATION 4.0 HEALTH EDUCATION AND LEARNING STYLES IN ADULTS 5.0 CONCLUSION 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Good health is the most important aspect in an individual’s life. Studies have shown that the health of a person can be affected by many different factors. At the advent of science and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures only the physical/environmental factors were thought to influence the health of a person. Thus the health promotion activities that were developed mainly advocated the prevention or enhancement of physical determinants of health. This was boosted by the scientific studies which identified a significant link between the physical factors such as microbial agents and health of a person. Measures have for a long time been developed and are still being researched to address the environmental factors that adversely affect health. The healthcare system in place is sufficiently equipped to address the healthcare needs arising from a person’s interaction with environmental factors. However, more recent research reveals that the greatest cause of ill health does...

Literature Review Acupuncture and Hemiplegia

...Acupuncture research in Cerebrovascular Accident induced hemiplegia. By Introduction to Cerebrovascular Accident and Hemiplegia Cerebrovascular Accident also known as stroke can broadly be described as an interruption of the blood supply to the brain. Without blood the brain cells are staved of oxygen, and can begin to die within minutes if the blood supply is completely cut off. It is this cellular death which has the greatest influence on the sequelae or after math of the stroke. Hemiplegia is the most common sequelae of stroke, this medical condition characterised by paralyses of one side of the body. It is similar to, but should not be confused with hemiparesis which is when one side of the body is weak but still mobile. While the leading cause of hemiplegia is a Cerebrovascular Accident, it is not the only cause, other neural conditions such as a unilateral pyramidal (UMN) lesion may also cause hemiplegia. It is difficult to discuss Hemiplegia without also discussing Stroke, similar to cause and effect, if stroke is the cause then hemiplegia is effect. A sudden stroke can be deadly, and how well someone recovers or if they recover depends largely on how fast they receive treatment. In Australia the most popular method for identifying stroke is the FAST test: * Face – Check their face. Has their mouth dropped? * Arms – Can they lift both arms? * Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? * Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these...

Translation Quality

...TRANSLATION QUALITY ASSESSMENT Translation quality assessment has become one of the key issues in translation studies. This comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of translation evaluation makes explicit the grounds of judging the worth of a translation and emphasizes that translation is, at its core, a linguistic operation. Written by the author of the world’s best known model of translation quality assessment, Juliane House, this book provides an overview of relevant contemporary interdisciplinary research on translation, intercultural communication and globalization, and corpus and psycho- and neuro-linguistic studies. House acknowledges the importance of the socio-cultural and situational contexts in which texts are embedded, and which need to be analysed when they are transferred through space and time in acts of translation, at the same time highlighting the linguistic nature of translation. The text includes a newly revised and presented model of translation quality assessment which, like its predecessors, relies on detailed textual and culturally informed contextual analysis and comparison. The test cases also show that there are two steps in translation evaluation: firstly, analysis, description and explanation; secondly, judgements of value, socio-cultural relevance and appropriateness. The second is futile without the first: to judge is easy, to understand less so. Translation Quality Assessment is an invaluable resource for students and researchers...

Interpretation of Dreams

...The Interpretation of Dreams Sigmund Freud (1900) PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION Wheras there was a space of nine years between the first and second editions of this book, the need of a third edition was apparent when little more than a year had elapsed. I ought to be gratified by this change; but if I was unwilling previously to attribute the neglect of my work to its small value, I cannot take the interest which is now making its appearance as proof of its quality. The advance of scientific knowledge has not left The Interpretation of Dreams untouched. When I wrote this book in 1899 there was as yet no "sexual theory," and the analysis of the more complicated forms of the psychoneuroses was still in its infancy. The interpretation of dreams was intended as an expedient to facilitate the psychological analysis of the neuroses; but since then a profounder understanding of the neuroses has contributed towards the comprehension of the dream. The doctrine of dream-interpretation itself has evolved in a direction which was insufficiently emphasized in the first edition of this book. From my own experience, and the works of Stekel and other writers, [1] I have since learned to appreciate more accurately the significance of symbolism in dreams (or rather, in unconscious thought). In the course of years, a mass of data has accumulated which demands consideration. I have endeavored to deal with these innovations by interpolations in the text and footnotes. If these additions do...
