As we continue forth into the novella, Dickens provides descriptions to display who Scrooge is, the initial reaction for the audience is to despise him. Nevertheless, as the ghosts are introduced this reveals another aspect of Scrooge and how he was once loving and caring. This allows the entrance of Bob Cratchit as he is a depiction of what morals people should have such as the essence of Christmas and your family is the most important thing in your life. Consequently, Dickens uses Fan, Scrooge’s sister as a symbol to represent the happiness that she had brought along with her, “...clapped her hands and laughed...stood on tiptoe to embrace him,” and able to understand what he used to be. In the process of changing his ways he had learnt to value important things in life such as happiness, love, and family more than the way he valued himself and his wealth. Dickens chooses to transform Scrooge in order to highlight the importance of kindness and its effects. As he is confronted by the ghost of Christmas past, present and future he begins to transform himself. The ghost of Christmas past had showed him the kind of employer Fezziwig was towards Scrooge and this contrasts to how Scrooge mistreated Bob Cratchit. Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley are characters in A Christmas Carol that showcase the harm of greedy living without compassion. The rest of the characters, such as the Cratchits or Fred, contrast the miserly moneylenders. Heathcliff and Hindley Earnshaw are characters in Wuthering Heights who cause so much pain to others and themselves due to their obsession of ownership and revenge.
