...Nick Saban If Nick Saban were running a company instead of a football program, he would be a top manager. Alabama football is big business, and it will continue to get bigger under Saban. “In 2006, the year before he arrived in Tuscaloosa, the athletic department brought in $67.7 million in revenue, mostly from football, and spent $60.6 million. Last year revenue was $124.5 million and expenditures were $105.1 million -- leaving a $19.4 million profit, according to figures compiled by USA Today. During Saban's tenure, Alabama has expanded the capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium from 92,000 to 101,000, including the addition of new luxury (i.e., more expensive) seating”(O'Keefe, 2012). It was an obvious decision for the school to give him a two-year contract extension along with a significant raise earlier last year. With a salary package that averages $5.6 million a year over the next eight years, Saban is among the highest paid coaches in college football. “Nick Saban, the undisputed emperor of college football, has everything he could ever want in Tuscaloosa: Three national titles in four seasons; a great shot at another one a year from now; the best players; no static from anyone, including the browbeaten reporters who cover him; and the whole world kissing his feet”(Silver, 2013). Nick Saban is no doubt one of the best college football coaches in America. His passion, work ethic, persistence, and humility have got him to where he is today. These characteristics started when...

...Nicole Cummings POSU 343 Signature Assignment October 16, 2014 Brown vs. Board of Education The court case docketed Brown vs. Board of education was a culmination of several individuals seeking constitutional justice for their civil liberties. These brave individuals changed the course of history. This landmark case changed racial segregation in schools and allowed equal education to all regardless of race. Although the Declaration of Independence declared that all men were created equal, it wasn’t for many years after the ending of slavery that equal rights were strengthened and the effects of slavery were abolished. Amendments to the constitution were put into effect to equal out the balance of the laws due to racial segregation, but despite these amendments African-Americans were rarely given the equal treatment as their white counterparts. Many states, especially in the south, made segregation a legal practice. What became known as Jim Crow Laws, were regulations that enabled separate bathrooms, busses, and schools simply based on the color of their skin. Many people disagreed with these unjust laws, but only few made their opinion known in court. One of the first cases to be heard regarding unmerited segregation was brought to the Supreme Court by a gentleman by the name of Homer Plessy. Mr. Plessy refused to give up his seat on the train to a white man and was therefore arrested. He knew that this arrest violated the 14th amendments “equal protection clause”...

...Clark Farley AMST 486: Shalom Y’all Dr. Marcie Cohen Ferris 08 December, 2010 The Relationship of Southern Jews to Blacks and the Civil Rights Movement Since the 1960’s historians and many other scholars have tried to delve into the relationship of blacks and Jews. The experiences of blacks and Jewish people have common histories of dispersion, bondage, persecution, and emancipation. Their relationship can be primarily recognized since the formation of the NAACP in 1909. During the civil rights movement, this organization played a key role in the black-Jewish alliance. However, many scholars have argued if there ever was an alliance between the two, and if so, what might have caused this alliance to break? We may generalize that today’s relationship between the two groups is a relationship in which Jews are superior in regards to social position. In my research I analyzed the works of several scholars to seek the involvement of southern Jews with blacks and the Civil Rights movement. In his 1973 publication of The Provincials, Eli Evans argues that the South is one of the least anti-Semitic regions in the Nation. Among their gentile neighbors, Jews had been accepted as white members of Southern society during the civil rights movement. At this time Jews barely made up one percent of the South's population. Even though a large portion of white civil rights activists were Jewish, the percentage of Jews in the South that took part in the civil rights movement...

Ekstrom's 1989 study of adolescent influence, while providing an integrative model of teenager influence and a new scale of perceived relative influence. Further, we examine the effect of parental employment status on teens' influence, as well as gender-based differences in perceptions. Motivationalaspects, including product importance and usage, provided the strongest and most consistent explanations of teenagers' perceived relative influence across stages and purchase situations. In addition, parental employment status positively influenced teens' perceived influence of durable family...

So, when the Constitution was approved, certain provisions were added to the Constitution to ensure a balance between the larger states and the smaller ones (American Government, Wilson, Dilulio, Bose, 2014). As stated earlier, the power between the Federal Government and the State Government is shared. Much of the power the Federal Government has stems directly from the Constitution. The Constitution tells the states pretty much what they can do as well. An example of what the Federal Government can do is the ability to print and coin money, as well as the capacity to conduct trade with other nations, along with the ability to declare war. In this section, examples are to be provided to explain about Federalism and its importance in today’s world. This first example has to do with the delegation of powers which is correctly distributed in the Constitution. One such power is the ability to print and coin money. Alexander Hamilton (The first...

...Nathan Liebaert John Theil The American Civil War 04-18-13 Sumter to Think About Graphic photos depicting tragic events during the course of the history of this great nation are in obvious abundance. Whether it was the Vietnamese War, to those horrific scenes captured on film that fateful day, September Eleventh, 2001, visual documentation of violence continues to captivate these United States. During the Civil War, capturing a photo was in its infancy. Despite the primitive technology, there may be no better way to express the horrific events that transpired inside of Andersonville prison, as well as the overall feel of the Civil War in general. The visual of malnourished inmates dying a slow, agonizing death invokes emotion to most that view them. Despite all of this horrible negativity surrounding the prison, did anything good come out of Andersonville? Was it as awful as documented or simply a necessary evil of the war itself? I liken this to a high budget Hollywood blockbuster, horrible comparison but it seems to be what comes to mind. In most major motion pictures, the “winner” is placed upon a pedestal for all to cheer. The “loser” on the other hand, that’s normally the villain of the story. Certainly the Union had to have prisons set up where similar acts were being enforced, right? Is Andersonville so well regarded as the worst of the worst simply because the south have the stank of loserdom all over them? Located in Andersonville, Georgia, this Confederate...

...A Review of ANN-based Short-Term Load Forecasting Models Y. Rui A.A. El-Keib Department of Electrical Engineering University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487 Abstract - Artificial Neural Networks (AAN) have recently been receiving considerable attention and a large number of publications concerning ANN-based short-term load forecasting (STLF) have appreared in the literature. An extensive survey of ANN-based load forecasting models is given in this paper. The six most important factors which affect the accuracy and efficiency of the load forecasters are presented and discussed. The paper also includes conclusions reached by the authors as a result of their research in this area. Keywords: artificial neural networks, short-term load forecasting models Introduction Accurate and robust load forecasting is of great importance for power system operation. It is the basis of economic dispatch, hydro-thermal coordination, unit commitment, transaction evaluation, and system security analysis among other functions. Because of its importance, load forecasting has been extensively researched and a large number of models were proposed during the past several decades, such as Box-Jenkins models, ARIMA models, Kalman filtering models, and the spectral expansion techniques-based models. Generally, the models are based on statistcal methods and work well under normal conditions, however, they show some deficiency in the presence of an abrupt change in environmental or sociological variables...

...ROLE OF LABOUR DISCIPLINE, TIME AND SPACE IN THE FORMATION OF MODERN PRISON Name Course Instructor Name Institution Date Role of Labour Discipline, Time and Space in the Formation of Modern Prison. The jail system began on seventeenth century. It was during this time that the outcasts in the society including the homeless and the poor were segregated and they were enclosed in a particular place on their own (Matthews 2009, 20). This was either done for a period after which they were taken back or it was done permanently where they were supposed to remain on their own forever. This was realised later that it could also act as a form of punishment to those who were identified with general misconduct. There was a shift on the punishment where people stopped giving corporal punishment which included public executions, whipping or shaming which were commonly used to new methods that involved locking out the criminals out of the society on their own. This evolved as a form of punishment where offenders would be deprived their liberty for a specified period. Role of Time The most recent type of crime activity to have developed in UK and all across Europe is the phenomenon of gang activities. Gang activities are believed to have increased especially due to the fact that the crime has been ignored for a long period. However, the olden theories about the origin of the gangs and the sources the gangs acquire their power have been found to be misleading. It...

Ethical questions of this magnitude have been pondered by academics and legal stalwarts alike with great depth both at the local and global level for years. Several studies reflect that a substantial percentage of the “major” NCAA recruiting violations and cases of egregious academic misconduct occur typically at institutions where local administrators and financiers have created a “win at all costs” culture pertaining to BCS (Bowl Championship Series) football and the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. A handful of local schools sanctioned by the NCAA in the last few decades for recruiting violations and academic misconduct include the University of South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas. Each year the NCAA collects its constituents: college presidents, athletic directors, and compliance directors (among others), to discuss the current “integrity climate” of college...

...PERCEPTIONS OF RURAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS OF THE TRANSFER PROCESS TO A FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTION: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY by ELIZABETH E. SACKSTEDER LACLAIR A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the College of Education in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2010 Copyright Elizabeth E. Sacksteder LaClair 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Utilizing the current literature base on rural community colleges, transfer student adjustment, academic advising and articulation issues, the purpose of this research study was to ascertain the adjustment issues and experiences of rural community college students who have the intent to transfer to a four-year baccalaureate degree granting institution. The perceptions these rural community college students have regarding the transfer process are the focus of the study. Students from ten rural community colleges, who participated in the Alabama College Transfer Advising Corps, a project of The University of Alabama and funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation were used in the study. The survey instrument used in this study is a variation of Laanan Transfer Student Questionnaire (L-TSQ). Survey questions were reframed such that those regarding university experiences and the students’ potential transfer to a four-year college/university were treated as reflections on the meditational transition, or transition that has not...
