T,F 7:30 – 9:00 am * Is there a need to have a k-12 program?
-------------------------------------------------
Working Together to Improve Student Achievement * The following article outlines the importance for K-12 teachers to work with faculty on the university level in order to make more clear the demands and expectations for today's students. Haycock supports the notion that standards-based assessment is crucial to ensure that secondary school teachers are adequately preparing their students for their college courses, and that college faculty know what to expect from their incoming students. An active partnership between the K-12 teachers and college faculty promotes the continuity of quality experience on each step of a student's education. * Across the country, K-12 educators are engaged in a serious effort aimed at ensuring that all high school students can read, write, compute, and reason at high levels. Their success at this task would be a dream come true for faculty members in the nation's colleges and universities, who have been complaining for years about their entering freshmen's low skill levels and about the high cost of remediation. * Despite its obvious stake in the K-12 effort though, higher education has provided shockingly little support. Indeed, it sometimes seems as though "higher" educators have grown so accustomed to receiving underprepared students from "lower" educators that they literally can't imagine an alternative scenario — or at least can't imagine it clearly enough to actually roll up their sleeves and help create one. * Our two systems of education, it turns out, are so intertwined that we simply cannot achieve big changes in one without * The road to deeper understanding of the many connections between higher education and K-12 is littered with

An Inconvinient Truth

...An Inconvenient Truth Reaction Paper With more and more affects of global climate change happening worldwide, an effort had to be made to publicize the dilemma, so that the public could truly understand the seriousness of the problem. For many years efforts have been made by oil companies and other lobbyist organizations to cover up the truly horrific effects of global climate change and the fact that human use of fossil fuels is the cause. Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, was just what the public needed. Not only does it break down global warming to its basic concepts such as the greenhouse gas effect and how the carbon dioxide release from the combustion of fossil fuels affects it, but it also details the global effects that will take place if carbon dioxide levels begin to rise. Throughout the movie, Al Gore uses strong visuals to help emphasize his point. I believe one of the most effective visuals that he uses is the projected carbon dioxide level. Using the cherry picker lift to literally point out where the levels will be compared to the past levels was very eye-opening. Also, the facts he brought to light about the secondary effects of global warming were astonishing. Not only does it have the primary effects you would expect from any type of climate change, but he also links the effects on the hydrological cycle to the escalating violence and genocide Darfur. Water riots from shortages have been documented in that part of the Sudan and...

Inconvinient Truth

...In the film documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, former Vice President Al Gore primarily discusses the topic of global warming and the possible adverse effects that the world may have to face due to unawareness of this significant issue. In the movie, Gore seems to portray the general public as careless towards the matter. This is what I believe led his determination to let the issue be brought into further detail such as portraying the very serious and severe effects on many, if not all, parts of the world. Although the general consensus by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is not one hundred percent positive on the direct cause of global warming, it has been stated that “The Earth's climate changes in response to external forcing, including variations in its orbit around the Sun, orbital forcing, changes in solar luminosity, volcanic eruptions, and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations” (Bard). Among these the only issue that we as humans can actually help to resolve is the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced, and try to help curve the accelerating depletion of our ozone layer. Gore focuses on topics of greenhouse gas emissions, such as the relationship between CO2 levels and global temperature, the actions that can be taken to decrease global CO2 levels. To further reiterate the issue, Gore goes into detail about the melting of land-based ice and the impact it will have on global water levels, and the severe global impact of the arctic polar ice cap...

The Inconvinient Truth

...The purpose of the organs of the male reproductive system is to perform the following functions: * To produce, maintain, and transport sperm (the male reproductive cells) and protective fluid (semen) * To discharge sperm within the female reproductive tract during sex * To produce and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system Unlike the female reproductive system, most of the male reproductive system is located outside of the body. These external structures include the penis, scrotum, and testicles. * Penis: This is the male organ used in sexual intercourse. It has three parts: the root, which attaches to the wall of the abdomen; the body, or shaft; and the glans, which is the cone-shaped part at the end of the penis. The glans, also called the head of the penis, is covered with a loose layer of skin called foreskin. This skin is sometimes removed in a procedure called circumcision. The opening of the urethra, the tube that transports semen and urine, is at the tip of the penis. The penis also contains a number of sensitive nerve endings. The body of the penis is cylindrical in shape and consists of three circular shaped chambers. These chambers are made up of special, sponge-like tissue. This tissue contains thousands of large spaces that fill with blood when the man is sexually aroused. As the penis fills with blood, it becomes rigid and erect, which allows for penetration during sexual intercourse. The skin of the...

...facing the greatest risk from hurricanes and other natural disasters. “In fact we top the list of nations most in danger of facing more frequent and more intense storms when the impact of climate change intensifies," she said.  Mrs. Arroyo noted that the recent destruction from tropical cyclones Ondoy and Pepeng caused an estimated $4.4 billion in damage to the country’s most populous regions of metropolitan Manila and urban centers in the northern Philippines. An Inconvenient Truth Reaction Paper  The award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore is an eye opener and somehow it is a wake up call for me. I have heard about global warming way back high school and heard it often when I entered college. I knew the meaning of the term global warming and that was it. I knew a little about it, what causes global warming and how fatal are its effects to Earth. And honestly, I never really cared. I was one of those people who treat it very lightly and after watching An Inconvenient Truth I was caught off guard by the concrete and hard fact. After watching the documentary I knew what Earth’s big time enemy is today, and that is global warming. The documentary gave me a deeper understanding of what global warming really is and what will be the consequences if we do not do something about it. The way the documentary is presented is very effective. Al Gore defined and described global warming in a way a...

An Inconvenient Truth

...Inconvinient Truth COPENHAGEN – Addressing the climate summit here Thursday, President Arroyo stressed the vulnerability of the Philippines to extreme weather events, but curiously stopped short of joining the clamor from other developing countries for increased international funding that will allow poor nations to cope with the negative impact of climate change. Arroyo cited a United Nations study that showed the Philippines as one of the top 12 countries in the world facing the greatest risk from hurricanes and other natural disasters. “In fact we top the list of nations most in danger of facing more frequent and more intense storms when the impact of climate change intensifies," she said.
