The Indifferent Stars Above is not merely a nonfiction historical account of the Donner Party migration as the U.S. moved to expand it's frontiers, but it is a deeply enriching story of survival. Daniel Brown strips the mythologized category of the emigrants and the Donner party from the American embellished view of American Pioneers and instead paints the real atrocities that were faced on a daily basis by the unit of emigrants as they moved their way through Utah, Oregon, and California. Brown dedicates his anthropological foundation to the story of Sarah Graves and begins his historical account with the initial source; bones. Brown interestingly finds a link between his father's uncle George W. Tucker and Sarah Graves, the Donner Party Bride. He notes that is unlikely that they knew each other …show more content…
As contraceptives did not exist, the use of lamb gut for the stitching of condoms was expensive to manufacture and the flawed knowledge of fetal formation led to the creation of poisonous tonics made of deadly nightshade as a means of terminating pregnancy. It is important to note that pregnancy would be a risk during this travel as sustenance was limited. Outside the realities of this emigration, pregnancy often defined marriage between a man and woman. As the units of emigrants moved through this undiscovered land, the encounters with native Americans became hostile as all but a few lacked specific skills and experience for traveling through mountains and arid land, and had little knowledge about how to deal with Native Americans. Brown details the use of the Hastings Cutoff, written by Lansford Hastings. Although this offered a rough mapped outline for the perceived cut for the travel of the emigrants, it lacked essential information on the arid land and climate that would lead to the eventual death of 39 of the emigrant

Sustainability Report - Arcelormittal 2011

...ArcelorMittal 2011 Executive Summary The underlying challenge for human organizations in the 21st century is to build and preserve a sustainable combination/blend of economic, social, and environmental conditions in a progressive global and commercial society. However, it is a challenge that is not being met at present. Currently it is failing to meet even the basic needs of the society, or to protect its natural resources and the ecosystems that produce them, even as it creates unprecedented wealth and amenities for a few. The reasons for these failures lie in both economic and political institutions. Sustainable Enterprises pioneers established concepts and tools for implementing eco-efficiency measures and also show how to use them immediately to reap business worth. Business enterprises in turn must quantify themselves against a “triple bottom line” which includes social value, environmental and economic profit. ArcelorMittal is one such company that has implemented eco-efficiency measures and realized the business benefits. Monitoring Systems Monitoring is a systematic and on-going activity which involves collecting, recording and reporting information. Monitoring systems for any organisation should be developed for three dimensions based on the triple bottom line. Monitoring Systems for Planet Monitoring systems and eco-tracking help to answer some fundamental questions:   What are the company‟s big environmental impacts? When and where do those impacts arise? During...

History 1

...Chapter Fifteen The Roman Empire at its Zenith (to 235 CE) In retrospect we can see that a decline of the Roman empire began in the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180), when the Germanic barbarians along the Rhine and especially the Danube discovered that the Romans were not well equipped to fight wars on two fronts. When the emperor, that is, was preoccupied with a war against the Parthians in Mesopotamia, the Roman frontier along and beyond the Danube was poorly defended, and the barbarians could make raids deep into the Roman provinces. Despite the danger of wars on two fronts, the Roman empire was able to manage well enough from the 160s until 235, when the decline became precipitous, and brought with it radical economic, cultural and religious changes. This chapter, therefore, will look at the empire in its relatively golden period, from the first century until the death of Alexander Severus, the last of the Severi, in 235. The classes This was a stratified, hierarchical society in all ways. In civic status the top of the pyramid was the emperor, followed by Roman provincial governors, senators and other officials, then by the local gentry, and next by the rank and file of Roman citizens. Of all the free men in the empire, only about a third ranked as Roman citizens. Right behind the Romans were the Hellenes (in the Greek-speaking eastern provinces the Hellenes were enrolled as such in the municipal census), then came Judaeans, and finally the other barbarians. So in...

Supplier firms under increasing pressure from relentless competitive forces are seeking to retain and grow the share of business from profitable existing customers as a means of finding a way out of downward spiralling price pressures. While a lot has been written in academics about the importance of CVM, several gaps remain on understanding how a large company actually undertakes this journey. Crafting competitive value chains and focusing on streams of competition are also emerging as important agenda for supplier firms since, increasingly, the end customer is no longer willing to pay for inefficiencies in the value chains. In this context, the challenge for a supplier firm in business markets is no longer restricted to getting its own operations in order, but, additionally, it must ensure that multiple interfaces that exist across the entire value chain all the way until the end customer are streamlined so that the...

Specifically, each player has preferences about the action profile—the list of all the players’ actions. (See Section 17.4, in the mathematical appendix, for a discussion of profiles.)
