I would paint ‘be an anomaly’ on the Beta Bridge. The word anomaly to me is an inspirational and goes beyond the basic definition of deviation. It is rather something that constantly pushes the boundaries of acceptable. The word anomaly often applies to the many great people, innovations, and beliefs present in the world today. I would like to innovate something others would not have thought of. In order to be an anomaly in the sense of bettering society, I would argue you must think outside of the box and go beyond the programmed ideas of society. Throughout history, patterns within society have been broken, ways of life have changed. Usually this is at the hands of an individual or a groups of individuals who see the world in a different

...would acquire the 49.6 percent of GEICO Corporation that it did not already own. The $2.3 billion deal would give GEICO shareholders $70.00 per share, up from the $55.75 per share market price before the announcement. Observers were astonished at the 26 percent premium that Berkshire Hathaway would pay, particularly since Buffett proposed to change nothing about GEICO, and there were no apparent synergies in the combination of the two firms. At the announcement, Berkshire Hathaway’s shares closed up 2.4 percent for the day, for a gain in market value of $718 million.1 That day, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed up 0.5 percent. The acquisition of GEICO renewed public interest in its architect, Warren Buffett. In many ways he was an anomaly. One of the richest individuals in the world (with an estimated net worth of about $7 billion), he was also respected and even beloved. Though he had accumulated perhaps the best investment record in history (a compound annual increase in wealth of 28 percent from 1965 to 1994),2 Berkshire Hathaway paid him only $100,000 per year to serve as its CEO. Buffett and other insiders controlled 47.9 percent of the company, yet Buffett ran the company in the interests of all shareholders. He was the subject of numerous laudatory articles and three biographies,3 yet he remained an intensely private individual. Though acclaimed by many as an intellectual genius, he shunned the company of intellectuals and preferred to affect the manner of a down-home...

...FINANCIAL TERMS MADE EASY BY ADEEL AND MOHSIN A Accrual -Estimates of costs incurred but not yet invoiced. They are charged to the Profit and Loss Account and will also appear as liabilities in the Balance Sheet. Examples: A business records its utility bills as soon as it receives them and not when they are paid, because the service has already been used. The company ignored the date when the payment will be made. An airline sells its tickets days or even weeks before the flight is made, but it does not record the payments as revenue because the flight, the event on which the revenue is based has not occurred yet. Acquisition - When one company purchases a majority interest in the acquired. Ad valorem -A tax based on the assessed value of real estate or asset. Ad valorem taxes can be property tax or even duty on imported items. Property ad valorem taxes are the major source of revenue for state and municipal governments.  Explanation: The phrase ad valorem is Latin for "according to value". In the case of municipal property taxes, property owners have their property assessed on a periodic basis by a public tax assessor. Aging schedule - Table that classifies accounts payable or accounts receivable according to their dates. It helps in analyzing which payments are behind their due date, and by how many days. American depository receipt-A negotiable certificate issued by a U.S. bank representing a specified number of shares (or one share) in a foreign stock that is traded...

Warren Buffett 2005 Study Case

...the second largest of his entire career, MidAmerican would purchase PacifiCorp from its parent, Scottish Power plc, for $5.1 billion in cash and $4.3 billion in liabilities and preferred stock. “The energy sector has long interested us, and this is the right fit,” Buffett said. At the announcement, Berkshire Hathaway’s Class A shares closed up 2.4% for the day, for a gain in market value of $2.17 billion.1 Scottish Power’s share price also jumped 6.28% on the news2; the S&P 500 Composite Index closed up 0.02%. Exhibit 1 illustrates the recent share-price performance for Berkshire Hathaway, Scottish Power, and the S&P 500 Index. The acquisition of PacifiCorp renewed public interest in its sponsor, Warren Buffett. In many ways, he was an anomaly. One of the richest individuals in the world (with an estimated net worth of about $44 billion), he was also respected and even beloved. Though he had accumulated perhaps the best investment record in history (a compound annual increase in wealth for Berkshire Hathaway of 24% from 1965 to 2004),3 Berkshire paid him only $100,000 per year to serve as its CEO. While Buffett and other insiders controlled 41.8% of Berkshire Hathaway, he ran the company in the interests of all shareholders. “We will not take cash compensation, restricted stock, or option grants that would make our results superior to [those of Berkshire’s investors],” Buffett said. “I will keep well over 99% of my net worth in Berkshire. My wife and I have never sold a share...
