...carefree juvenile dodging and weaving between dumpsters and beer bottles, all the while trying to stay in front of the car behind him. As a text pops up on his phone he glances sideways and reaches for his device, only to look up and scream in terror as he pulls violently on the steering wheel, but is unable to steer away from the painted brick wall in front of him. Like countless adolescents, this boy was careless and did not know the consequences of his actions. Most teenagers are careless when they race for the story, text and drive, and watch television that portrays popularity as disobedience. One way teenagers show carelessness is when they race for the story. Kids love to be first; it is in their nature. For example, in any school or sport competition, we all love to be first or be the first to try out a new toy for two reasons: the story (be the first to tell everyone what happened) and the hope of a prize. In doing this, all knowledge of right and wrong is thrown out the window and all rational thought process goes to winning, which can lead to failure, physical and/or mental injury, a loss of friends, and more. Another way adolescents exhibit carelessness is when they text and drive....

...Driving with a Distraction The cause of 1.6 million crashes and three hundred and thirty thousand injuries occur each year. No, this is not due to driving under intoxication or even driving while fatigued or unrested, but by what most of us would not see as being so fatal; texting while driving. For a long time, it was said to be “normal” to use a phone no matter if you are driving or just walking past cars; however, eleven teens die each day and a million people die each year due to texting and driving. While we all know the risks that come with it, everyone still does it. There are simple solutions as to pull over and reply to the person who has messaged you or to wait until you arrive at your destination. If people take these solutions...

...not the most responsible thing to do behind the wheel. Visual, manual and cognitive are three types of distraction and texting takes up all. Texting on your cellular phone makes you an irresponsible driver. “I’ve seen it firsthand, it does cause accidents, it’s dangerous and it’s irresponsible,” a former police officer commented (Marino, 2012). Driving a vehicle requires full responsibility and one who is not willing to take the precautions on it should not be issued a drivers license. The consequences range from receiving a ticket to having a fatal car accident. All of these distractions can always wait; they are not worth paying a ticket, taking someone’s life or losing your own. Keeping your eyes on the road is the most important thing to do when operating a vehicle. Five seconds off the road traveling at fifty-five mph is like driving an entire football field without looking (Marino, 2012). Five seconds sounds so insignificant yet can be your biggest regret. Many things can go wrong in those five seconds; it simply takes one second for you to rear-end the car in front of you. People do not realize they are operating a weapon with a blind fold when they are looking away. In order to take rapid initiative to prevent an accident visual focus on the road is required to know what is happening or about to happen. Manual distraction adds to the irresponsibility of a driver. Majority of the people drive with only one hand operating the vehicle yet reaching out for the cellular...

...messages and talking on the phone while driving is a secondary offense? Ironically, this means that an officer cannot stop a driver for only texting or talking on the phone, it has to accompany by a second infraction, such as driving with excess speed or not respect traffic signals. While this law continues to be a secondary offense and has not given the proper attention it requires; it will result in the excessive ascent of fatal accidents, and the lives of its innocent citizens are in danger of being invested by an irresponsible driver. Even more, growing the fear and the uncertainty that could be his last day behind the wheel. Unquestionably, a radical transformation to this reform would bring...

You should have come to the cuckoo’s calling, Or when grapes are green in the cluster, Or, at least, when lithe swallows muster For their far off flying From summer dying. Why did you die when the lambs were cropping? You should have died at the apples’ dropping, When the grasshopper comes to trouble, And the wheat-fields are sodden stubble, And all winds go sighing For sweet things dying. Christina G.
