...MY Essay Florida, August 10th 1998 What motivates you? For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. Where others see the engineering, experimentation, and presentation of science as a chore, I only see excitement. Even as a child I constantly sought it out, first on television with Bill Nye and The Myth busters, then later in person in every museum exhibit I could find. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. To me, science projects were a special joy that only grew with time. In fact, it was this continued fascination for hands-on science that brought me years later to the sauna that is the University of Alabama in mid-June. Participating in the Student Science Training Program and working in their lab made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just the thought of participating in a project at this level of scientific rigor made me forget that this was supposed to be my summer break and I spent the first day eagerly examining every piece of equipment. Even at first, when the whole research group sat there doing rote calculations and others felt like they were staring down the barrel of defeated purpose, I remained enthusiastic. Time and time again I reminded myself of that famous phrase "great effort leads to great rewards," and sure enough, soon my aspirations began to be met. This shift in attitude also coincided with a shift in location: from the computer desk to the laser lab. It...

...English Literature Before 1790 Essay #21: Assess the role of the female characters in Oroonoko Feminist point of view and psychoanalysis Notes to LCY We change the focus now We talk about how the narrator tells more than stories She portrays 3 things - all paradoxical 1. Her position in the book – the implication of power in society, and her flip to author creating a superior position 2. Her uncertainty over female power – the flip 3. Her subordination (submission) – her paradoxical actions and her will (can also mention what she has seen) Focus on 3 things on how they affect the 3 things it portrays 1. Patriarchy 2. Oppression 3. Stereotyping When the French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (1973) wrote “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman” (p. 301), it raised the idea that instead of any biological, psychological, or economic causes, being a women is purely a social construction in a patriarchal society to oppress women. The use of the word “becomes” implies a voluntary submission that under a patriarchal settings, women embrace the stereotypical norms of what constitutes femininity, hence “become” a woman (Butler, 1986). Under such settings in a parochial society, the birth of Oroonoko highlights the paradoxical traits of female though its display of psychological struggles occurring between the main characters. Oroonoko, commonly regarded as the most famous book by the first English female professional writer Aphra Behn in 1680 (already...

Based on the articles I have read GE prides itself in training and leading its employees to grow and mature. The culture seems very open to smart and talented business professionals. “If businesses managed their money as carelessly as they manage their people, most would go bankrupt.& The authors believe that for a CEO it is in your and your company's best interest to know what your employees are capable of. This is done by having a file on each employee - not just the basic information, but having interviews with colleagues and superiors. An example is the CEO of General Electric's appliance wing, Larry Johnston. When he decided to quit, the heads of General Electric knew exactly who the candidates were to replace him. On the same day General Electric announced his resignation they also announced his replacement. This is done through what Conaty explains as General Electric's Operating System which has three main phases: people; strategy; and operations...

...The World Is Flat Flattener Information Technology Essay The World Is Flat is an international bestselling book by Thomas Friedman that analyzes globalization, primarily in the early 21st century. The title is a metaphor for viewing the world as a level playing field in terms of commerce, where all competitors have an equal opportunity. Globalization became more prominent during the last decades. Friedman argues that globalization made the world smaller and flatter, allowing all countries to take chance of the available opportunities equally. As Friedman describes in “The World is Flat” there are three eras of globalization and ten flatteners which made the world smaller, making it easier to communicate and share our knowledge. This paper deals with the flattener number 2 i.e.; “When the NetScape went Public” and associated developments after 2003 till date. Background Thomas Lauren Friedman is an American journalist, columnist and author and has won the Pulitzer Prize three times. The first era, called "Globalization 1.0",between the years 1492, when Columbus set out to discover a new trade route to the New World, and 1800, made the world fall in size from large to medium. During this period, the strength of a country was based on the number of horsepower or the number of steam engines owned, compared with other countries. The second period - "Globalization 2.0", between the years 1800 and...

...Patagonia is company that sells outdoor sports equipment and apparel, however, they are very much dedicated to their employees. They are committed to making the best products while causing the least possible harm to the environment. “An organic cotton garment is indistinguishable to the sight and touch from a garment made of conventionally grown cotton. Hence, one might think that any willingness on the customer’s part to pay a premium for organically produced cotton would have to arise from concern about the upstream effects of the cotton production (specifically, lower levels of pesticides and fertilizers that may affect ecosystems in and near the fields where the cotton is grown)” (Casadesus-Masanell, Crooke, Reinhardt, and Vasishth, p. 5). Revolutionary, durable outdoor gear and clothing are the assurance that products meet high expectations and have earned the company a loyal customer base. Patagonia recycles and use organic products for a healthier lifestyle. Their unconventional corporate culture is based on commitment to environmental, moral, ethical, and philosophical causes. “Despite its merits, Patagonia falls short in some areas, according to our judges. Although customer service was rated as excellent overall, one judge griped that the company’s unusually strong guarantee is “hidden’ and should be posted right at the top of the customer service page” (Ramaswami, p. 23). There are customer that join Patagonia to further the social responsibility efforts because...
