"It is education that has altered my life. Carried me far." This quote was drawn from the story "The Hunger of Memory." In this essay I will answer the prompt "To what extent does a person's culture inform the way we view others and the world." I will defend that prompt by saying "Our culture always informs the way we view people or the world around us." In the stories "Everyday use", "Hunger of Memory" and " Indian Father Plea." They are all good examples of my thesis statement because they use three areas of culture such as education, family and ethnicity. Those all help to explain how culture shapes the way we view things.

A person’s culture influences the way that he or she looks at and interacts with the world. For example, in the story "Everyday Use" education plays a big role in the story." She used to read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, other folks’ habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice. She washed us in a river of make-believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn’t necessarily need to know." Mama speaks these words in reference to Dee’s formative years. Rather than her daughter’s intelligence and accomplishments triggering pride in Mama, Dee’s schooling prompts fear and intimidation in her instead. Education is the means through which Dee rejects and belittles her family, thus leading to division and alienation. At the same time, knowledge is a provocation, reminding Mama of the exposure and opportunities she was never given. Also in the story "An Indian Father's Plea" education has affected the way a boy named Wind-Wolf is labeled. "So you see, all of these influences together make him somewhat shy and quiet and perhaps 'slow' according to your standards." Wind-Wolf was raised learning how to weave baskets and he can count more than 40 kinds of birds. But to the school standards he is slow because he is behind in what they want him to learn. The story "The Hunger of Memory" education has help this guy come from the bottom of the world to on top. "It is education that has altered my life. Carried me far." The author was once a little boy with intense family closeness and was extremely alienated from public. To be surrounded in a room full of volumes of Montaigne and Shakespeare and Lawrence. The only thing that has carry him this far to be living in Bel Air is his education. Education will influences ways they view people and ideas throughout the world. Education is not the only thing that also influences culture. Family can also influences your ideas.

A person's culture could be influence by their family and how they grew up. For example, in the story "The Hunger of Memory" family has shaped his life. "What preoccupies me is immediate; the separation I endure with my parents is loss." This means that culturally he has given up on his family and disown them just to get farther in life. With them he thinks about the heritage but he does not really want to since he has become so successful without them. His family has shaped how he looks at things because he has talked in front of crowds about his book and life. In the story "An Indian Father's Plea" the importance of family and culture is talked about through the whole story. "If you ask him how many months there are in a year, he will probably tell you 13." This is because he was taught by their traditional people that there are 13 full moons in a year according to the native tribal calendar and that there are 13 planets and 13 tail feathers in an eagle. Wind-Wolf has learned these things from when he was first born so he thinks they are right no matter what anybody else says since his family taught him that. His family had a good explanation to believe for why there would be 13 months in a year instead of 12. So Wind-Wolf family shapes the way he believe and sees things throughout school and life. From the story "Everyday Use" family has shaped the way the two sisters view each other and their mom. "Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by some careless person rich enough to own a car, side up to someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to him? This is the way my Maggie walks. She knows she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by." This quote is about Mama when narrates these words as Maggie joins her in the yard to wait for Dee. In this brief quotation she bluntly characterizes Maggie as a pathetic figure who shows the effects of her sheltered life and disfigurement. Maggie’s crushed spirit and withering, withdrawn nature disappoint Mama, but she ultimately chooses Maggie’s simplicity and faithfulness over Dee’s shallow selfishness. Mama feels she is the protector of one daughter and the victim of the other. She dreams of the impending marriage that will relieve her of the burden of Maggie and leave her to a quiet life. These quotes from the stories really help to show how family can change you as a person and view other people in life. Ethnicity can influence your ideas and what you do in life.

Another main area of culture is ethnicity which will shape how you view people and the world around you. For example, in the story "An Indian Father's Plea" ethnicity has a role in the story. "He is probably what you would consider a typical Indian kid. He was born and raised on a reservation." His ethnicity comes out right away by telling you that he is Indian and people view him a bit different. He learned different then other kids like how to count. People will also look at him a little different and some could say he is a "slow" learner but he has his own ways to learn. In the story "The Hunger of Memory" ethnicity is a big part in his story from how he was on bottom but rose to the top. "Aztec ruin hold no special interest for me. I do not search Mexican graveyards for ties to unnamable ancestors." In this quote he is explaining how he is going to leave his ethnicity of being Mexican behind. So that he can rise up without having a burden of people judging you by your race or what your background is. A live a normal American life. In "Everyday Use" ethnicity plays a big role on Dee. "And Dee. I see her standing off under the sweet gum tree she used to dig gum out of, a look of concentration on her face as she watched the last dingy gray board of house fall in towards the red hot brick chimney." Angered by what she views as a history of oppression in her family, Dee has constructed a new heritage for herself and rejected her real heritage. She fails to see the family legacy of her given name and takes on a new name, Wangero, which she believes more accurately represents her African heritage. However, the new name, like the “African” clothes and jewelry she wears to make a statement, is meaningless. She has little true understanding of Africa, so what she considers her true heritage is actually empty and false. Overall culture is influence by many different things through your life.

In conclusion whether you believe culture plays a big part in how you view people and the world. It is true that it does. Education shapes how you view people by how much money they have and what level of education they have. Family draws you an image of the world by what you believe and how you were raised whether to like a certain thing or not. Ethnicity creates a way you see things by people race or religion. Like some people look different at other races than their own race. In the end culture will always shape the way you view things in life if you think something is right or wrong.

The King

...Metamorphosis of King Lear Through the course of the play, King Lear goes through a process of attaining self-knowledge. With this knowledge, he goes through a metamorphosis of person, much like a caterpillar's change into a butterfly. In the beginning, King Lear's vanity, and the image and exercise of power dominate his person. But a series of losses (based on his own bad decisions), a wise "fool", a powerful storm, a seemingly crazy man, and the death of one who truly loved him clear his vision and allow him to see himself and the world as they truly are. The pain and suffering endured by Lear eventually tears down his strength and sanity. Lear is not as strong, arrogant, and filled with pride as he seems in the beginning of the play. Instead he a is weak, scared and confused old man. At the end of the play Lear has completely lost his sanity with the loss of his daughter, Cordelia and this is the breaking point that leads Lear to his death. In the beginning, King Lear shows his need for praise is how he chooses to divide his kingdom among his daughters. The one who praises him with the most "love" shall receive the largest area of land. This is even more evident when considering that Lear already has divided up the kingdom before the praising even begins, as he gives each daughter her land before hearing the next daughter's praise. Thus the entire arbitration is just a show and an ego boost to himself. It is because of his love for praise that makes him react so strongly...

Kings

...Should the Kings Stay In Sacramento? For many years, there has been an ongoing debate about moving the Sacramento Kings to Seattle and becoming the Supersonics. Although it may sound like a great idea, there are good and bad consequences that come with them moving or staying at either city. The reason for such a controversial debate revolves around money and fans. A group led by the investor Chris Hansen had a deal with the Kings owners with the idea of moving the team to Seattle. Once the idea became known by everyone, the debate grew. The cities of Seattle and Sacramento both want the NBA franchise for many reasons. Having an NBA franchise in Sacramento will help the economy and fans, and will keep the only professional sports team in Sacramento. The reason Seattle wants the Kings franchise is because it will benefit Seattle’s economy. The franchise will be playing the next couple of seasons in Key Arena, and, in the meantime, a new $490 million arena will be built in downtown Seattle. According to a column in the Bleacher Report, “The public will pay $200 million and that money will be paid back using ticket sales and rent money. If not, Hansen himself will be responsible” (Lingberg). Hansen is getting the public on his side by using them to get the Kings to come to Seattle. With the Kings becoming the Supersonics it will help boost Seattle’s economy by opening jobs at the new arena, the expenses that will be made at the arena, and all the Supersonic merchandise that will...

Stephen King

...Stephen King is an American author of horror and suspense novels. He has sold over 350 million books worldwide. Many of his books have been made into movies and television shows. Recently Mister King was kind enough to talk about his life and writings in a candid interview. The results of the interview reveal some interesting facts about one of America’s most successful author. He was born as Stephen Edward King on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. Most of his stories take place in his native state of Maine. When asked about his education, he proudly admitted he graduated from the University of Maine, with Bachelor of Arts degree in English, in 1970. As a child King witnessed his friend being hit by, and killed, a train. He claims that many people credit this traumatizing event as the inspiration for his dark stories, but King denies this. He says that the chief inspiration for writing horror stories came when he discovered a collection of short stories, called The Lurker in the Shadows, in his attic, while rummaging around with his brother. He says while looking at the cover art of the book, he realized what he wanted to do with his life. King revealed that he began writing for fun while in high school. He would sometimes sell writings, about movies he had seen, to his friends. While in high school, King had his first published work. “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber”, was presented in four parts, three of which were published. While in college, King wrote a column...

...Introduction Burger King is the world’s largest flame broiled fast food restaurant chain. As of 2011, Burger King operates restaurants in 12,300 locations serving over 11 million guests daily in 76 countries and territories worldwide (Burger King , 2011). Burger King’s core competency is its unique flame-broiled burgers. This process is difficult to imitate and helps differentiates Burger King from other fast food chains that fry their burgers instead. So much so in fact, no other fast food provider flame broils their burgers. In addition, Burger King allows and encourages consumers to customize the unique flame-broiled burgers with options to their liking. This creates a win-win situation for both Burger King and the consumer. Burger King has the benefit of offering a different product and the consumer benefits by having numerous burger options. Although Burger King has expanded its menu selections, they have remained true to their original flame-broiled burgers. This product gives them an advantage over other fast food chains. Facing intense competition and limited growth opportunities domestically, Burger King hopes strengthen their competitive stance through international expansion. By mid 2009, Burger King was not in any of the following countries: France, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa. Compare these countries as possible future locations for Burger King. In looking for new countries to enter, Burger King needs to identify countries that fit its ideal demographic...

Burger King

...Burger King Burger King, often abbreviated as BK, is a global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants headquartered in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The company began in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. Over the next half century, the company would change hands four times, with its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in BK in a deal valued at $3.26 billion (USD). The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. The Burger King menu has evolved from a basic offering of burgers, French fries, sodas, and milkshakes in 1954, to a larger, more diverse set of product offerings. After knowing the good facts about burger king I wanted see where is burger king lacking behind. So I visited the burger king outlet which is inside the international plaza. The reason why burger king is lacking behind is because of its old store and with its old brand image. Every time when I visit burger king I never see the outlet cleaned it is always messy never saw good promotion outside the outlet to attract customers. The staffing of the burger king is not sufficient where people gather in a big hall of 50 packs. The hierarchy of the outlet should be changed. I saw that different staff position where doing the same work as if there is no respect...

Rodney King

...Case of Rodney King By: Donald Gilliam March 4, 2014 Tim Morris Criminal Law Case of Rodney King: Within today’s society police brutality and racism go hand in hand together, and play a huge part with shaping our society but unfortunately today police brutality is a major concern in the United States. Within many cases, violence is an ongoing battle for millions, and from this stems the many types of violence such as racial discrimination, gang violence and unpredictable outbursts of brutality and from saying that there will always be the cold hard fact that there are some authority figures abusing their power. Cases of police brutality can be traced back to centuries ago, unfortunately when one usually thinks about the given topic, the biggest incident that comes to mind is the Rodney King trial. Since I will be touching on one of the most controversial cases in police brutality it is safe to say that police brutality is still “one of the most serious human violations in the United States. For years the negative use of force used by police officers and local authority has been of a main concern and a large issue throughout our nation” ("LA riots,"). Everything begins when, police officers abuse the use of force that has been given to them, meaning that it has become a growing concern about the abuse of police officers using unnecessary force. And as people have become more educated and aware of what’s taken place, more people have united. People have filed many...

...the age of 18. Tutankhamen (King Tut) was buried in a tomb discovered by an English archeologist named Howard Carter, on November 26, 1922. Inside the tomb lied King Tut within a quartzite sarcophagus- three separate coffins place one inside the other (Sayre, 2012). This essay includes scientific, historical, and other theories in how Tutankhamen died, includes two different theories and perspectives of how Tutankhamen died, and explain the theory of which of the two that is the most convincing towards the death of Tutankhamen. According to Archaeologist Chris Naunton, director of Egypt Exploration Society, learned that king tut body was burned. Chris discovered and studied the notes from Howard Carter and Carter assistant Lord Carnarvon (Carnarvon was also there at the discovery). The burning of the body was from the ritual of mummification of a king. Chris determined that King Tut died of an injury, driving a chariot to fast. The National geographic (2013) presume the king was maybe killed by a kick to the chest and ribs by a horse, since horses pulled the chariots. Both incidents sums the details up as which, King Tut died of an injury and not a disease or any other way. From the x-rays, CT scans, and other examinations King Tut died of an injury. The chariot the King was riding could have flipped over, someone could have ran into the King doing battle, or the horse could have ran the King over of kicked him. The injury in the death of the King is supported by the examinations...

Burger King

...Milton Burger King Background: Burger King, a fast food restaurant business, grew from only 5 restaurants in Miami, Florida to 12,000 restaurants worldwide currently. Their outlets are located in 73 countries around the globe where 66% of them are in the US alone. Their flagship product, Whopper - a big sized burger, went into the market 3 years after the company was founded. The rapid growth in the number of BK restaurants was due to the implementation of the following expansion strategies: 1. Franchise Business and 2. Selling of territorial rights to investors at the same time during the years, BK also experienced several ownership changes resulting from selling and merger of companies. However, 48 years after that, in 2002, they found themselves burdened with financial problems which were caused by those strategies and ownership changes. Issue: Although Burger King became successful out side of the country, why wasn’t they’re successful in other places outside the country? There can be many reasons in why Burger King wasn’t successful I other places outside of the country. King Lear

...King Lear (Free Essay No Copyright) In King Lear, the unnatural elements seem to always dominate the natural elements throughout the play. There exists a reversal of order in the play where the evil prosper in the downfall of the good, and where man's life is meaningless and arbitrary. King Lear, the tragic hero, dies in the end despite the torment and agony he had to endure to regenerate and repent. But it is the worthless destruction of countless other lives because of Lear's own personal tragedy that supports the view of the brutality and the meaningless of man's life in the play. Life in Lear's universe is brutal, and at times, merciless. All this has been brought about by the reign of evil in the play. The natural order of things has been reversed to such an extent that many of society's cherished values have been neglected and confused. Evil characters such as Edmund is praised by Gloucester for exposing the "treachery" of Edgar, while Edgar is denounced for his "villany". Love, based on selflessness and truth, is weighted in materialistic terms. A man's life, then, can only be considered arbitrary and meaningless in the chaotic universe of King Lear. The character of Lear and Gloucester die in a state of joy, but they nevertheless die in the end resulf. Both had immeasurable sufferings for their follies, and yet both had gained wisdom - patience, insight, love - from their experiences. Both were shown to have the capacity for comparison during their ordeals...

King Lear

...KING LEAR Act 1-3 Review Act 1, Scene 1 Analysis The first scene sets up the action and the main theme of the play. King Lear has three daughters, and he requires from each a profession of love in exchange for a reward of inheritance. The two daughters who love him least and who are most dishonest easily fulfill his requirements, speaking elegantly but emptily of their great love for him. Lear is pleased with this superficial and deceitful proclamation of love. His honest daughter, Cordelia, will not give Lear a false declaration. She loves him, she says, simply as a father, no more and no less. Her love, unlike her sisters', is a true love, but she is unwilling to exaggerate it in false language. Lear cannot understand this, and he immediately turns on Cordelia, his most beloved daughter, and disowns her. Lear is a flawed character, valuing the external declaration of love over true and proven love. His actions are so unreasonable that the reader may wonder why Cordelia loves him, aside from her duty as his daughter and subject. Act 1, Scene 2 Analysis The second scene reveals the subplot of Edmund's machinations to wheedle his father's lands away from him. As in the story of King Lear and his daughters, Gloucester must decide which of his children is truly loyal to him. The son that seems loyal only appears loyal through his deceit. He lies and manipulates in order to appear loving and loyal. Edgar, the truly loyal son, will appear disloyal through his brother's...
