Soraya, unlike Amir, came forward and confessed about her sinful past to Amir and says to Amir, ‘I’d rather you hear it from me’(Hosseini 164). Soraya is well aware that at some point Amir will ask about her rumored past in their marriage, but yet she managed to muster up enough courage to tell him. Unlike Amir, her “secret was out”(Hosseini 165) and it took her a shorter amount of time to confess compared to Amir. Moreover, Soraya was more optimistic and resilient than Amir when they had difficulty getting Sohrab into the United States. “After I met Soraya Taheri, every night of the week became a yelda for me”(Hosseini 144), Amir’s exaggerating to show how every minute away from Soraya was torture. It is a wonder how Amir passed his exam since he constantly thought of Soraya’s nose rather than listening to lectures in his class. His heart “stuttered at the thought of her”(Hosseini 142), Soraya had become the dictator of his heart and mind.

Soraya previous reckless behavior has brought shame on General Taheri, her father. In the Afghan world, “every woman needed”(Hosseini 178), if not it was believed she would be doomed. Someone once said, ‘that boy did well not to marry his cousin’(Hosseini 178), broaching her sinful past. General Taheri would have had to “dance with her at every wedding”(Hosseini 148), and must have felt humiliated because that was the job of a suitor, something Soraya did not have. The general is a very traditional man and probably hated every minute of dancing with his daughter due to the lack of suitors.
