The Lady or the Tiger

...Open-Ended Controversy in “The Lady or the Tiger” “The decisions of this tribunal were not only fair, they were positively determinate: the accused person was instantly punished if he found himself guilty, and, if innocent, he was rewarded on the spot, whether he liked it or not. There was no escape from the judgments of the king's arena” (Stockton 3). In Frank Stockton’s short story “The Lady or the Tiger,” the door opened by the man anxiously awaiting his fate holds the tiger, as guided by the princess. The “hot-blooded, semi-barbaric princess” who directs the destiny of the man by a hand signal, was raised to have a “fervent and imperious soul” (Stockton 3). Since the princess knows that the only other option, besides death, for the man she was in love with is to watch her beloved marry a woman she feels an extreme hatred for, it is clear to see the princess choses the fate of the man to be sadistically eaten by a tiger. The princess from “The Lady or the Tiger” by Frank Stockton has an “intensity of the savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors” (Stockton 4) that causes her to chose death for the fate of the man over marriage of another young woman. The second option, to watch her true love marry a woman who she despised, was unreasonable and not chosen, because “the thought of her love marrying someone else weighed on her barbaric mind more heavily than the thought of her love being torn to shreds by a tiger” (Reed). With either decision...

The Lady Or The Tiger

...In the short story, “the Lady or the Tiger,” the author uses plot structure to develop the unique writing style. For instance, the author does not use a traditional plot structure. The author creates his unique writing by ending the story right after the climax. In “The Lady or the Tiger” the author writes, “Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right, and opened it,” (9). At this point, it is the climax of the story, and the author does not continue on such as a normal story would. In a normal story there would be an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and a resolution. “The Lady or the Tiger” contains the first three, but not a falling action or resolution. Similarly, the author does include a resolution....

The Lady or the Tiger

...The Lady Or The Tiger? By: Frank Stockton In the very olden time there lived a semi-barbaric king, whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened by the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammeled, as became the half of him which was barbaric. He was a man of exuberant fancy, and, withal, of an authority so irresistible that, at his will, he turned his varied fancies into facts. He was greatly given to self-communing, and, when he and himself agreed upon anything, the thing was done. When every member of his domestic and political systems moved smoothly in its appointed course, his nature was bland and genial; but, whenever there was a little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked straight and crush down uneven places. Among the borrowed notions by which his barbarism had become semified was that of the public arena, in which, by exhibitions of manly and beastly valor, the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured. But even here the exuberant and barbaric fancy asserted itself. The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people. This vast...

Synthesis

...Synthesis Essay H.P. Lovecraft said, “Classics are a story of the past but shall live longer than any man as ever seen.” When you read the classics, such as: Dr. Seuss’ stories, The Pit and The Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe, and the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, you get an insight to history. A classic is only a classic if it talks about, or tackles, the problem of the day that it was written or the problems of the future. Classics are historical books that have an outstanding meaning to them and they all relate to life and they are relevant today because the meaning portrayed by them, transcend over time. Classics are classics if they consist of one of these topics: love, death, and wishes. The first theme you’ll see most commonly used in a classic is love. In the stories, “Sonnet 18” and “Sonnet 130” by W. Shakespeare, and “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allen Poe, they all portray that love is a wonderful thing. In Sonnet 18, lines 1-4, it states, “So long as man can breathe or eyes can see so long lives this, and gives life to thee.” The meaning of this is that your beauty and love for one another is never failing as you continue to live. In sonnet 130,lines 9-11, Shakespeare wrote, “I love to hear her speak, yet well I know that music hath a far more pleasing sound. I grant I never saw a goddess go.” As you can see, love can be a good or bad thing. In this case, love is a hideous thing and Shakespeare wrote about how love is funny. In a change to the meaning of love we move to the light...

Here There Be Tygers

...Literary essay “Here There Be Tygers” ”The authority of those who teach is often an obstacle to those who want to learn” – Marcus Tullius Cicero The school is supposed to be a place where children can let their imagination flow. But in the school of the 1960´s, rules, authorities, discipline and the promise of physical punishment to those who did not obey, subjugated children’s imagination. Stephen King’s short story from 1968 “Here There Be Tygers” is about a strict teacher and a young boy whose imagination comes to live in the shape of a fearsome tiger, and challenges the order and the strict discipline of a US primary school. The story is narrated from the main character Charles´ perspective. The narrator is a third person, non-omniscient narrator, which means that we see the world trough Charles´ eyes, from a child’s perspective. This signifies that we see things that happen, the way he experiences it. To Charles, the tiger, which he encounters in the men’s bathroom, is as real as Miss Bird. Charles feels that his teacher, Miss Bird, is hostile towards him, the narrator says: ”She meant to pounce. Charles thought that miss bird was about to find out what pouncing was really about”(p.159, l.23-25). This displays Charles´ apprehension towards miss Bird because, from his perspective, it feels like his teacher really is attacking him. From a grown ups perspective, miss Birds behaviour would not seem as aggressive as it does to Charles. Charles has a very strained...

Here There Be Tygers

...can take you wherever you like to go. Off cause we have to follow the set of rules society makes, but that doesn’t give them the right to tell us what to do or interfere in our naturally evolvement. ”Here there be tygers”(1968), is a short story written by Stephen King. The short story is about how a boy’s imagination and free will, can lead a rebellious strike against modern society. The story is narrated from Charles’ perspective and the narrator is a third person, nom-omniscient narrator. The story takes place in the Acorn Street Grammar School. We can’t be sure about the historical time, but two posters on the bulletin board in the hall within the school indicate that the historical time might take place around the 1970’s in USA. The woodsy owl made its first appearance in 1971 and officer friendly was an officer in the U.S Marine Corps who travelled around to schools in the 1960’s to the 1980’s. Within the school, the story especially takes place in the third-grade classroom, the basement and the bathroom inside the basement. The basement is generally described as where the boilers are kept and well-groomed ladies and gentlemen would never go down there but they would rather go to the bathroom. These two places throughout the story confuse Charles, who finds it rather hard to decide where to go to urinate. Charles is a...
