...A kiss In modern day society and western culture, seeing two people intertwined in a kiss happens on a daily basis without any second thought. It is an action that almost everyone engages in at some point in their life. However, a kiss can have multiple meanings, as shown in the pictures above. A kiss can have many cultural connotations depending on the cultural context and can mean a variety of things including the expression of love, passion, affection, friendship, or good luck. In each of the pictures above, a different emotion is being expressed, but the bottom line remains that a kiss knows no color, no race, no sexual orientation, or class. A kiss is universal. In the first photo, a viewer may notice the black and white couple first, or the fact that the photograph was taken in black and white, but it is obvious that the main focus of this picture is the kiss. The first feelings that may be invoked would be a feeling of love because that’s what a kiss is commonly known for. After reading the caption underneath the photo, the kiss itself takes on an entirely new meaning. This photo was taken in the spring of 1965, in Washington, D.C., of Richard and Mildred Delores Loving, an interracial couple defying the idea of right and wrong as defined by the Racial Integrity Act of 1959 in the Common wealth of Virginia. When you look at the photo, you notice the man is pulling the woman into her as if he wants to protect her from the harm and pain she might endure...

...Swedish and American Wedding Customs Marriage is a sacred word. The word marriage means the same thing in all walks of life. To be married means that a man and woman have pledged themselves to one another publically and before God. Each country has some form of marriage but the ceremony is different because of beliefs and cultures. For example, the Swedish culture has different wedding customs than the United States. First, there are many traditions that take place before the actual ceremony. Second, the ceremony has unique quirks that differ from the United States. Last, the reception is the one thing that is the most similar to the United States. Things have been the same for hundreds of years when it comes to marriage. The first thing that needs to happen is the choice of a husband or wife. In traditional days, marriage wasn’t all flowers and romance. The Swedish considered marriage to be the start of a family business. (Betrothal, Banns and Wedding) A Swedish girl could certainly choose her own husband as long as the family approved. He had to be of worth to the whole family. If her choice of a groom did not have an abundance of money, he at least had to have something to offer. For example, he should be a land owner or have some type of talent that could make money. (Betrothal, Banns and Wedding) There were several ways a man and woman would meet. The most common way was to get acquainted during various social events. In some parts of Sweden,...

...Passion has long been used as a central theme in many poems throughout time. It is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something". It also defines it as "a strong sexual or romantic feeling for someone". Symbolism is widely used by poets to relay these emotions. In the poem "Sexual Fire From Within" by Peter LeBuhn, the author uses a fire to present a vivid picture of the passion and desire he has toward a woman. Three elements are needed to start a fire. These are heat, fuel, and oxygen according to the National Park Service. That seems simple enough, but how does that apply to this poem? The author states in his own words that "Many words that are written and spoken are from real life and feeling. This is what I attempt to convey to the reader as I write, to pull the reader into the experience as I write." In this poem the author uses a fire as a symbol for the passion and desire that rage within him. The first element in starting a fire is an ignition source. "Heat comes first from the ignition source" as explained in the Fire Triangle by the National Park Service. It would seem that there is a fire ready to be started at any moment given the right ingredients. In this poem one ignition source is the poet's lover's touch. The first two lines of the poem affirm that. It clearly states, "There is a fire within us...that only needs touch to bring forth flame". This simple touch is the spark...

...couch, and you two never make it pass the bed. She grabs you and starts kissing you as you two fall onto the bed. She is on top of you, her hair falling down like a curtain over your face. I can still see you two kissing passionately her full lips crushing yours, your tongues dancing. She pushing her hand up your top to caress your breast, you had completely succumbed to her. She pushed your top up over your head keeping your arms tied up in it. She continued to kiss you, pulling at your lip with her teeth, then biting your neck and burying her face between you soft full breasts. She looks over at me, laid back on the couch, watching her skillfully seduce you. She takes your nipple in between her teeth and tugs, raking it as you arch you back in appreciation. Her eyes still on me, she flutters her silky tongue over your erect nipple before taking it her mouth, your head arched back now trying to free your arms so that you could participate. Once your arms are free you pull her up, your lips lock in a deep hungry kiss, this time you’re driving. Your hands in her dark hair holding her to you. You had been over this a least a hundred times in your head, and it was obvious by the look in your eyes that you two were the only people in the...

...WATCHING THE ENGLISH The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour Kate Fox Awkwardness Rules As it is, our introductions and greetings tend to be uncomfortable, clumsy and inelegant. Among established friends, there is less awkwardness, although we are often still not quite sure what to do with our hands, or whether to hug or kiss. The French custom of a kiss on each cheek has become popular among the chattering classes and some other middle- and upper-middle-class groups, but is regarded as silly and pretentious by many other sections of society, particularly when it takes the form of the ‘air-kiss’. Women who use this variant (and it is only women; men do not air-kiss, unless they are very camp gays, and even then it is done ‘ironically’) are disparagingly referred to as ‘Mwah-Mwahs’. Even in the social circles where cheek-kissing is acceptable, one can still never be entirely sure whether one kiss or two is required, resulting in much awkward hesitation and bumping as the parties try to second-guess each other. Handshakes are now the norm in business introductions – or rather, they are the norm when people in business are introduced to each other for the first time. Ironically, the first introduction, where a degree of formality is expected, is the easiest. (Note, though, that the English handshake is always somewhat awkward, very brief, performed ‘at arm’s length’, and without any of the spare-hand involvement – clasping, forearm patting, etc. – found in less inhibited cultures...

...Robinson is a poem about a man who has lost a lover and being talked into following her into the afterlife. Annabel Lee written by Edgar A. Poe is a poem also about a man who has just lost a lover and is remeniscing on their life together and how she was pretty much stolen from him. In the both poems, the diction the authors chose to use is what helps set the style of the poem. It also helps the reader understand the characters and the situation. In Luke Havergal, the it tells the reader who the subject and narrator are. For example “Out of a grave I come to quench the kiss” (18). We know the narrator is saying they’re coming from beyond the grave so it’s probably a ghost or spirit. Because of the word kiss, we would assume a romantic relationship between the two. But the narrator uses the term ‘quench’. The dictionary definition of the word quench is to satisfy a thirst by drinking. If the narrator would kiss the subject to make him feel satisfied it’s possible that they didn’t love each other at all. The subject could have possibly loved the narrator but the narrator did not return those feelings. In Annable Lee the the narrator creates this atmosphere of a day-dream. The opening lines a god example; “It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea”(1-2). It’s a similar opening to that of a fairie tales “Once upon a time, in a far away land”. And this state if reverie continues even after the death of his beloved. “For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams...

Repetition in the second line of the third stanza, of ‘no kiss, no kiss, no kiss,’ could be a form of begging or desperation. The lack of kiss shows that the fighting is most likely among a couple that usually are in good terms, that the quarreling had caused an opposite of what was really wanted. Repetition gives it a sorrowful approach, as the negative point was made more than...
