The novel uses real places, like fort William Henry, to add validity to the story that takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War. This is when France and Great Britain battled for control of the North American colonies. The book is classified in the historical section with some romance in the mix even though it is clearly all fictitious. Reading the novel is an entirely different experience than watching Hollywood’s version in the motion picture. I was able to get a clear picture of what James F. Cooper was really trying to tell his audience when he wrote this book. Cooper portrays the prejudice ideals of the times and tries to show the reader how silly they are. As well as addressing racial prejudice, he skirts the bounds of interracial relationships and taboos for his time. He also demonstrates a distinct difference in groups of American Indians. While they all portray violent tendencies, he does make a distinction. Cooper used each character to embody a belief or a stereotype. Duncan Hayward, the white major of the English army, represented the conservatives of his time. He also was a classic embodiment of racial prejudice. For example, Colonel Munro had two daughters, Cora and Alice. In the first part of the book, we grow to love Cora as a character. She has been outspoken with her opinions...

Three men, the last of a vanishing Mohicans are on the frontier are traveling west to find a new home. The oldest is Chingachgook, the last chief of the Mohican tribe. With him is his son, Uncas, and an adopted son, a white man named Nathaniel Poe, who also goes by the name “ Hawkeye”. Major Duncan Heyward, of the British Army, has arrived in Albany. He has been sent to serve under Colonel Munro, the commander of Fort William Henry. Heyward has also been given the assignment of escorting the colonel’s two daughters, Cora and Alice, to the fort to join their father. He is a family friend, and in love with Cora, and proposes to her before they leave. She does not give him an answer. Such characters like Hawkeye and Chingachgook are proof of this. Hawkeye is a white man that prefers to live and follow the code of the Indians, rather than that of the white settlers. It is as if he is playing both sides of the field which works to his advantage and also lets the reader see how open minded Hawkeye seems to be. He is best friends with Chingachgook, the chief of the Mohicans. This alone shows that Hawkeye has a certain kind of appreciation for individuality and clearly shows that he is able to make sensible decisions without regard to race. ...Kharon Charles 9/15/13 Film Critique: The Last of the Mohicans The film The Last of the Mohicans started out to slow for me so I didn’t enjoy the beginning part of the film. It seemed like a corny and home mad movie to me at first. Even when there was a little action in the beginning of the film it didn’t catch my attention as an intriguing film. I also didn’t like that there was only 3 of the Mohicans left. I feel like if there were more the movie would have been more exciting or more interesting. I enjoyed when they really were in war and it was a lot of action going on. I don’t think there should have been a love scene or romantic part during the war because that was very unrealistic to me. The way he was running through the war towards the girl barely getting touched was fake to me and I thought they should change that or make it where his path to her wasn’t so easy. I think the believability of the events that the film was trying to show was real but the execution of the film wasn’t the best it could have been. What I learned from this film was there were Indians fighting on both the French and the English side. I also learned that the Indians were much smarter than I thought they were.
