Jack Pierce, Universal Picture’s lead makeup artist, did the monster mask makeup for Karloff, giving him a blue-green tone, a time consuming (three-and-a-half hours process), and horrendous to apply. He did anatomical studies of surgery, anatomy, and medicine, to get the right look of a rough surgical procedure of a brain transplant patient, complete with metal clamps, and two electrodes embedded into Karloff's neck. Karloff started out in silent pictures in Hollywood, some of his early roles in film serials were The Masked Rider (1919) and King of the Wild (1930). Karloff was darker than most average English actors; he was often cast as foreigners such as Indian or Arabian, and usually as a villain. But eventually, after playing the monster in Frankenstein, he was able to decidedly pick any roles he wanted to play. Karloff went on to play various roles in other genres over the years, but he knew his fan base lay in the horror genre he helped make famous. However, once he entered the foster care system, Mrs. Nellie Strange, a savior of sort and his foster mother, became the tool in his development through the first stage of Erickson’s stages of development. It is evident within the first stage of development; trust versus mistrust. “…The major emphasis is on the mother’s positive and loving care for the child…if we pass successfully through this period of life, we will learn to trust that life is basically okay and have basic confidence in the future” (Harder, 2003). ...Objective: This study was undertaken to study physiological and behavioral pain responses of neonates and to assess the analgesic effect of orally administered sucrose as assessed by the behavioral pain rating scale [DAN (Douleur Aigu¨ du e Nouveau-n´ ) score] during venepuncture in neonates. e Method: In 50 healthy neonates requiring bilirubin estimation, blood sugar was randomly assigned to receive 2ml of 30% sucrose two minutes before the venepuncture (intervention) in comparison to a group not receiving sucrose (control). During the procedure, pain was assessed by behavioral pain rating scale [Douleur Aigu¨ Nouveau-n´ (DAN) scale]. The heart rate, oxygen e e saturation before, during and after procedure as well as crying time was noted. Results: There was significantly lower pain (DAN) score in the intervention group compared to control group. Median (interquartile) DAN score in the group receiving sucrose was 3 (1.5–5.5) compared to 7 (5–9.5) in control group. The difference in median DAN score between two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.0001). There was a significant increase in heart rate in the control group whereas in group receiving sucrose, no significant change in heart rate was observed. Similarly, oxygen saturation was also significantly reduced in control group when compared to intervention group. Conclusion: The analgesic effect of 30% sucrose was large enough to be clinically significant and can thus be detected by behavioral rating scale for acute pain (DAN)...
