Part one: Zodiac:
The Libra signifies the idea of balance and conciliation. This idea is reflected on the part of the novel, in which Wealtheow marries Hrothgar in order to reconcile two rival nations and to regain peace. Grendel describes her as a “holy servant of the common good” (86).
Part two: Philosophy:
New Testament Theology. New Testament Theology is the ideology that emphasizes the idea of miracles, forgiveness, and faith. This ideology is reflected on Wealtheow’s decision toward her marriage in order to reconcile the two rival nations. In this scene, Wealtheow is portrayed as a peacemaker with deep faith, indicating that she is the paradigm of the true Christian. Part one: Zodiac:
The Scorpio, which is a symbol of courage and power, is used when Grendel introduces Hrothulf saying he is a “sweet scorpion.”(98). This indicates that Hrothulf will gain power and will try to overthrow Hrothgar as the story progresses.
Part two: Philosophy:
Machiavellianism. Machiavenllianism is the ideology that emphasizes the detachment of oneself from emotional and conventional morality. Hrothgar’s arrival to the nation and his determination to overthrow Hrothgar’s kingdom reflects the idea of Machiavellianism in a way of Hrothulf denying the conventional morality.
9. Sagittarius—the Archer:
Part one: Zodiac:
The Sagittarius (the archer), a creature that is half human and half horse, often indicates one who is devoutly religious and open-minded. The archer is referred to be the old priest, Ork. Even though people mock him and don’t believe his words, Ork demonstrates religious practices with full faith; this part reflects Ork’s passion toward religion which relates to the Sagittarius’s character of being zealous toward his religious beliefs.
