The Lienzo is made up of two parts. The first is a large complex scene that shows the political structure of Tlaxcala. It has the symbols of Tlaxcala’s four altepetl surrounding the Emperor Charles V’s coat of arms. Around these, are symbols of authority, such as, chairs, shields, crosses, and churches.2 This shows how religion and men dominated the leadership and social status in Tlaxcala and how European forces, such as Emperor Charles V were highly
