One of the most notable points to note in Alexie Sherman’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven is its portrayal of life among the Native Americans. The book, in the form of interconnected short stories details mostly the experiences of ‘Thomas builds the fire’ and Victor Joseph. The experiences of the two notable characters has been based on the people they relate with such as their family members and the people they interact with at the Spokane reservation. The book has presented Native Americans in different ways that at times come out negatively and in stereotypical fashion. The experiences of Native Americans in Sherman’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven can be seen mostly through what Victor goes through as he struggles …show more content…
It is still important to note that one of the factors that lead to alcoholism as a route of escape is economic and this is where poverty comes in. in Samuel’s case, the association between alcoholism and a job loss is evident as ‘he picked up his severance check and headed for the door’ (Alexie 185). For someone who has not been an alcoholic, Samuel’s case is one that takes a sharp twist towards the self-destructive act of taking alcohol as a solution to problems. Instead of taking his check and looking for a better alternative, Samuel resorts to alcohol which as it has been pointed out is a self-destructive path that a number of characters seem to prefer in Sherman’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Samuel’s acts later on depict his suicidal nature considering his lack of belief on the job loss he has just suffered. This is revealed when Alexie notes that ‘Samuel couldn’t believe he had lost his job…tipped on a rail, fell face down on the tracks’ (192). It is clear that Samuel’s job loss drives him to take alcohol and subsequently putting himself in harm’s

Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven

...In society today children often watch, mirror, and act like their parents. In the collection of short stories entitled The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Sherman Alexie creates an image of a boy who has the same hopes and beliefs of his parents. Victor, the main character, has a hopeless attitude and a pessimistic outlook on life. These characteristics cannot be more attributed to his own personal decisions rather than any reasons beyond his control. When Victor is younger, he witnesses his parents enter and struggle with the alcoholic cycle of Indians. When Victor’s parents throw a New Years’ Eve party, it gets out of control and alcohol runs rampant. “He kissed his mother’s neck, tasted the salt and whiskey. He kissed his father’s...

Facebook

...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily...
