Most short stories are focused on one incident, single plot, one setting, and with a limited amount of characters. I think they should be kept in the syllabus because they are very simple and concise to read. This allows students to complete the piece within 30 minutes without boring the reader with extra context. Another reason is short stories are well-written and are very good authors because they know which pieces to keep in the story and which to cut out. Also we can experience different genres this is beneficial because students can enhance their vocabulary. Moreover it will improve both our writing and speaking skills. Different short stories can change students point of view because of other people’s experiences, opinions, culture …show more content…
First this was very concise with a basic setting and characters. Since it was short I was able to easily finish the story within 30 minutes. The reason why I choose to use this story was because it had surprised me and kept me understand until the end. Shirley Jackson used a point of view which presented the villagers as normal people environment. I was very confused at the beginning of the story because I have never read in such a view until i reached the end where it all made sense. The way she combined the point of view, plot to make the villagers normal creates a for an plot twist ending. At the start I thought that winning the lottery had a useful purpose in the village however it was the exact opposite of that. She subtly set the mood by choosing words which set the mood for example “The postmaster, Mr. Graves, followed him, carrying a three- legged stool, and the stool was put in the center of the square and Mr. Summers set the black box down on it. The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool.” This created a mood which was a bit tense. ...Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I trudge up two flights of stairs with the wind whipping at my face as my fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me.
