...Data Mining with R: learning by case studies Luis Torgo LIACC-FEP, University of Porto R. Campo Alegre, 823 - 4150 Porto, Portugal email: ltorgo@liacc.up.pt http://www.liacc.up.pt/∼ltorgo May 22, 2003 Preface The main goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the use of R as a tool for performing data mining. R is a freely downloadable1 language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. Its capabilities and the large set of available packages make this tool an excellent alternative to the existing (and expensive!) data mining tools. One of the key issues in data mining is size. A typical data mining problem involves a large database from where one seeks to extract useful knowledge. In this book we will use MySQL as the core database management system. MySQL is also freely available2 for several computer platforms. This means that you will be able to perform “serious” data mining without having to pay any money at all. Moreover, we hope to show you that this comes with no compromise in the quality of the obtained solutions. Expensive tools do not necessarily mean better tools! R together with MySQL form a pair very hard to beat as long as you are willing to spend some time learning how to use them. We think that it is worthwhile, and we hope that you are convinced as well at the end of reading this book. The goal of this book is not to describe all facets of data mining processes. Many books exist that cover this area. Instead we propose to introduce...

...Prepared exclusively for Montelymard What Readers Are Saying About Seven Languages in Seven Weeks Knowing multiple paradigms greatly influences our design abilities, so I’m always on the lookout for good books that’ll help me learn them. This book nicely brings prominent paradigms together. Bruce has experience learning and using multiple languages. Now you can gain from his experience through this book. I highly recommend it. Dr. Venkat Subramaniam Award-winning author and founder, Agile Developer, Inc. As a programmer, the importance of being exposed to new programming languages, paradigms, and techniques cannot be overstated. This book does a marvelous job of introducing seven important and diverse languages in a concise—but nontrivial—manner, revealing their strengths and reasons for being. This book is akin to a dim-sum buffet for any programmer who is interested in exploring new horizons or evaluating emerging languages before committing to studying one in particular. Antonio Cangiano Software engineer and technical evangelist, IBM Fasten your seat belts, because you are in for a fast-paced journey. This book is packed with programming-language-learning action. Bruce puts it all on the line, and the result is an engaging, rewarding book that passionate programmers will thoroughly enjoy. If you love learning new languages, if you want to challenge your mind, if you want to take your programming skills to the next level—this book is for you. You...

...STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The problem of stores control has existed for too long. This problem is still with us to date and is a universal rather than a peculiar problem. Thus, it is not limited to a single organization but all business. It is not only limited to the private sector with its background motive of profit maximization but also to the public organizations. Many business organizations the world over have not give stock control the prominence it deserves in spite of its varied importance. However, stock control began to gain recognition as a result of the industrial revelation that swept the advance countries of America and Europe in the 1930s. The problem of stock control may be attributable to the failure, on the part of the top management officials, to give a deserved attention to the function of stores as well as their inability to employ the services of as well qualified stores officer to take charge of stores supervision and management. Added to this problem is the issue of the dearth of storage facilities and the habit of stores procedure violation by the top, the middle, and the junior cadre personnel’s in the organization. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: The issue of management of stock is of vital importance to the success of any organization and is one of the serious determinants of the continuity and efficient productivity of the organization. As the study is significant because it is hoped that on the completion, the study will provide further...

Most computer science texts will begin with a section on the history of computers and then with a flurry of definitions that are just “so many words” to the average student. My approach with Blue Pelican Java is to first give the student some experience upon which to hang the definitions that come later, and consequently, make them more meaningful. This book does have a history section in Appendix S and plenty of definitions later when the student is ready for them. If you will look at Lesson 1, you will see that we go right to work and write a program the very first day. The student will not understand several things about that first program, yet he can immediately make the computer do something useful. This work ethic is typical of the remainder of the book. Rest assured that full understanding...

We at XLRI have structured our programmes in such a manner as to equip the future managers of tomorrow with learning, competencies and skills that can significantly contribute to the growth of the organization. XLRI has always been proudly associated with academic excellence, personal values and social concern. It has been the crucible of leadership training for over 60 years and its banner is held high by a fine breed of alumni who serve as “change agents” thereby adding a new dimension to their corporate role. This integral and value based formation will greatly assist our students to be innovative, competent and creative leaders. They are groomed in a manner as to serve as agents of continuous improvement and change. It was in 1997 that XLRI recognized an unfulfilled need for formal management training at middle and senior levels of corporate strata. The result of that thought process was the General Management Programme, which has ever since, transformed several industry professionals into veritable leaders who reflect the standards and values of XLRI at various organizations. Recognized by AICTE, the programme places emphasis on stringent admission procedures...

I would like to make a withdrawal. My account number is 0937. I would like$200. Give me five 20s and two 50s. 你不能先说: “Give me five 20s and two 50s.” *Read animals’weights from file; DATA animals; INFILE’c:\MyRawData\Zoo.dat’; INPUT Lions Tigers; PROC PRINT DATA=animals; /*Print the results*/ RUN;

...Acknowledgments ix Acknowledgments This book owes a great deal to the mental energy of several generations of scholars. As an undergraduate at the University of Cape Town, Francis Wilson made me aware of the importance of migrant labour and Robin Hallett inspired me, and a generation of students, to study the African past. At the School of Oriental and African Studies in London I was fortunate enough to have David Birmingham as a thesis supervisor. I hope that some of his knowledge and understanding of Lusophone Africa has found its way into this book. I owe an equal debt to Shula Marks who, over the years, has provided me with criticism and inspiration. In the United States I learnt a great deal from ]eanne Penvenne, Marcia Wright and, especially, Leroy Vail. In Switzerland I benefitted from the friendship and assistance of Laurent Monier of the IUED in Geneva, Francois Iecquier of the University of Lausanne and Mariette Ouwerhand of the dépurtement évangélrlyue (the former Swiss Mission). In South Africa, Patricia Davison of the South African Museum introduced me to material culture and made me aware of the richness of difference; the late Monica Wilson taught me the fundamentals of anthropology and Andrew Spiegel and Robert Thornton struggled to keep me abreast of changes in the discipline; Sue Newton-King and Nigel Penn brought shafts of light from the eighteenthcentury to bear on early industrialism. Charles van Onselen laid a major part of the intellectual foundations on...
