...Death Penalty Imagine yourself as a mother sitting by the window, looking at the swing set in your backyard, remembering memories of your son, an accused murdered now facing the death penalty. You know there must be some mistake. You cannot understand how your son could ever do something so terrible. Imagine yourself next as a father whose daughter was brutally murdered, and whose killer has been sentenced to the death penalty. You desire to push the button that sends the lethal drugs flowing through his veins. The death penalty has been the cause of many emotional, political and ethical debates since its inception. At what point do we as human beings agree or disagree with the Death Penalty if the victim or the offender is a family member? Should the Death Penalty still exist or should we keep offenders on Death Row for life to rehabilitate them? With the Death Penalty in America dating back to Jamestown Virginia in 1608 with the first recorded execution of Captain George Kendall, the question that remains today is, should the Death Penalty be legal? With the Death Penalty still in effect in 34 states, this raises the question, if violent crimes are down in the states that don’t have the Death Penalty why is it still in existence? When an offender commits a violent crime, it is the responsibility of our government to punish the offender, and keep the rest of us safe. There are many factors the government has to consider when sentencing a...

...cultures (Burnett & Reiman, 2014). Despite this fact, President Nixon put cannabis as a schedule one drug. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) definition of a schedule one is it is dangerous and has no medical use (Americans for Safe Access, n.d.). Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the drug in medical cannabis, is so safe and average sized man can swallow nearly a pound of it before overdosing that is like smoking 700 joints in one sitting at the same time. Also, medical cannabis could cure some illness that has no cure with little side effects. The FDA should approve medical cannabis because; it has low risk and can treat illness effectively without side effects like death. Medical cannabis has low risk. The risks of medical cannabis are much lower than most prescription medications. An opiate-based medication for pain has a much higher risk of overdose (Pickett, 2015). According to research, "Some antipsychotic drugs have serious physical side effects on internal organs like the heart and liver and cannabidiol was well-tolerated and did not significantly affect hepatic or cardiac functions" (Pickett, 2015 p.9). Although medical cannabis can cause lung problems if smoked, for those that are terminally ill it does not matter, it becomes irrelevant (Maule, 2015). In conclusion, medical cannabis has low risk, because it is nearly impossible to overdose on if one reframes from smoking it, and consumes it in another form it can treat illness with very little risk at all and be...

...Daniel Western Mr. Fatheree 2nd period May 20, 2014 The Art of Gameing Literature has always been considered the original medium of entertainment. It allowed the reader to enter another world and to see the veal world from the writer’s point of view. Eventually new forms of storytelling sprang forth like cinema. This evolution of storytelling allowed an artist to express their ideas without uttering a single word. So this brings up the question, “What is the next evolution of storytelling?” There is a large amount of evidence that shows that the next evolution in artistic storytelling is video games. A perfect example of gaming’s unique form of storytelling is a forgotten franchise known as the Ultima series. This long running saga stretches back to the Dos era of computer programming. Though the story of the original game was as, “Me good. He evil,” the plot began to evolve with the fourth entree to the series. The base goal of the first game is to act as a prophet for the player’s own religion with its own ideals, beliefs and deity… the player. The idea at first seems simple, but as the series progressed the player begins to realize that his/her actions might not have been the best. With the rise of religious radicals, the near extinction of people against the religion, and strong racial segregation, the player begins to realize that the choices of religious leaders have stronger affects on people then he/she thinks. This message is delivered better than any movie or...

...past it was being preformed on women since the fifteenth century all over the globe, but, most women did not survive the surgery. That is the biggest reason it was preformed in secret because it was taking so many lives. Thanks to modern day medicine and technology the success rate for women is nearly one hundred percent. Today, the decision that was made in 1973 has caused American citizens, mostly women, to debate wether abortion is considered murder or just a simple act of not wanting to bring an unwanted child into a home but many people have not chosen a defining side in the debate, yet there are many valid points on both sides of the pro-life and pro-choice arguments. The pro-choice side has more supporters today and their case is making a stronger impact on America. Points made on the pro-choice side have very valid factual evidence supporting them, but some are also pure opinion. An example of a factual point from the pro-choice side is that abortion a now very safe procedure. Less then one percent of women who get an abortion, before twenty one weeks of pregnancy, experience any major complications. If abortion is made illegal the pro-choice side believes women will seek other options to terminate their pregnancy. This would cause many women's death or near death due to inexperience in the medical field. Another factual based point is planned children tend to receive better care then the children who were accidentally conceived. One reason of this is because parents who...

...professionals are faced with an ethical decision or problem. The advancements in medicine and technology are raising questions and concerns never once thought of. Controversy over euthanasia is on the forefront of today’s health care platform. With the present change occurring with the American Heath Care Reform health care providers and society need to be informed of the options available in end of life care. This paper will present a debate about human euthanasia. Euthanasia will first be defined. Support for each side of the debate will be presented. Each side will be provided with questions from the opposing side, with the opposing teams response presented. Each side will then present a closing statement, again to support their side from the result of the debate. Euthanasia defined Euthanasia is the practice of mercifully ending a person's life to free someone from a deadly disease. The word euthanasia comes from the Greek word "good death." The term euthanasia is being used synonymously with the term Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS), although they are not one and the same. PAS generally refers to a practice in which the physician provides a patient with a lethal dose of medication, upon the patient's request, which the patient intends to use to end his or her own life (University of Washington School of Medicine, 2010). Voluntary active euthanasia means a deliberate intervention, by someone other than the person whose life is at stake, directly intended to...

...Science has come a long way in the world we live in. From not having medicines to having many different forms, from large amounts of the human population being lost to sickness to that sickness being avoided. The use of vaccinations is one way in which medical science has come a long way. Vaccines are used to try to provide an immunity against diseases and to act as an antigen. Vaccines are responsible for many successes such as the decrease in diseases such as Polio, however vaccines are also responsible for failures and cause much protest within our communities. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends getting 28 doses of 10 vaccines for kids aged 0 to six (“Should Any Vaccines”). However, No US federal laws exist that makes vaccinations...

...The Black Death There are many things that we overlooked as kids when studying the Black Death, and one of them is how religion, economics, and labor made the disease effect even more twisted by showing a horror side to human nature. The Black Death was a disease that killed majority of the citizens in Europe, and originally travelled there by a parasite riding on the backs of rats from Asia on sea merchant ships. The people of that time had different theories of how it came to Europe, however, they never thought the carriers being the rats. The theories that the people came up were: It being the wrath of God, infection of the air and waters, and blaming the Jews for polluting their waters. To help break the mold that we’ve been taught as kids, this essay will go into the economics, labor, and religion aspects that the Black Death...

... Abstract There are has been many lawsuits filed against makers of cribs and other infant products in recent years. Many recalls have been made on the 4 in 1crib since 1998 until present time and many deaths of infants have occurred as well. The following discussion will share the stories and lawsuits filed against companies such as Graco Children’s Products Inc., Simplicity and the outcome of the lawsuits and what things were added to enhance the safety and quality of the products. Simplicity Incorporated is one of the largest makers of baby products worldwide. The company produces and sells items such as the Aspen 3 in 1, Nursery in a Box and Crib in Changer Combo. Simplicity cribs also used the popular Graco logo on some of its bigger items such as the Ultra 4 in1, the Ultra 5 in 1 Whitney and the Trio. All of these items were recalled by because of several complaints and even some recorded deaths of infants. These items were sold in department stores and children’s stores and by mass merchandisers nationwide from January 1998 through May 2007 for between $100-$300 dollars and all items were made in China. The side of the crib that lowers can detach from the crib, creating a dangerous gap that can lead to the entrapment and suffocation of children. At the time that the reports were being made, three babies had already died and a 6 month-old, a 9 month-old and 1 year old died in cribs in which the drop-side was mistakenly installed upside down...

...For decades the death penalty has been an emotional and almost unmentionable issue that has affected people in many different ways. Whenever the word "death penalty" comes up, extremists from both sides start yelling out their arguments. One side says deterrence, the other side says there's a potential of executing an innocent person; one says justice, retribution, and punishment; the other side says execution is murder. Regardless of people’s philosophic points of view, it is important to be aware of the facts. This is exactly what I would like to talk about in this essay: the facts regarding this controversial issue. I do not have the answer to this question; I believe both viewpoints have good arguments. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion in this or any other matter, but no one is entitled to his own facts. What is the death penalty? Congress or any state legislature may prescribe the death penalty, also known as capital punishment, for murder and other capital crimes. (Death Penalty: An Overview, 2010) As far back as the Ancient Laws of China, the death penalty has been established as a punishment for crimes. In the 18th Century BC, the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon established the death penalty for twenty five different crimes, although murder was not one of them. The first death sentence historically recorded occurred in 16th Century BC Egypt where the wrongdoer, a member of nobility, was accused of magic, and ordered to take his own life. During this...

... There are many people who have come up with reasonable arguments for both sides of the issue. Most people who believe that the death penalty is a fair punishment use the argument, "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, an arm for an arm, a life for a life." Otherwise known as Hamarabi’s Code. While most people who are in opposition use the argument that capital punishment is a cruel and unusual punishment which violates the eighth amendment to the United States Constitution. In the times surrounding the origins of capital punishment, it was used for a wide variety of crimes. Capital punishment can also be found in the Bible. The Bible prescribed the death penalty for crimes such as murder, kidnapping and witchcraft. By 1500 AD, in England, only major felonies carried the death penalty: treason, murder, larceny, burglary, rape, and arson. (Lexicon Universal Encyclopedia, 1989) The United States inherited capital punishment from European settlers in the seventeenth century. They promoted the idea that heinous crimes deserved severe punishment. And this is what brought capital punishment to its present standing. In the United States justice system a proportionate punishment is achieved, in the case of a person who committed a crime, when the death penalty is enforced. By 1800 Parliament had enacted many new capital offenses, and hundreds of persons were being sentenced to death each year. Today, in the United States, there are approximately 3,624 people on death row, and all...

...issue and brings up many different points of views from many different people. Some argue that murderers should be executed and pay for the crimes they’ve committed while others believe life imprisonment is suffice. The Catholic Church condemns this type of punishment but those who have been victimized are crying for justice. Another argument is that the methods used for capital punishment is against the Eight Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. My intentions for this paper are to present and analyze both sides of the argument. Is the death penalty immoral or is it immoral not to impose it? Introduction Capital punishment, also known as the death, has been one of the most controversial issue currently still under fire about its morality. Many believe it is both unethical and morally wrong for the government to take one’s life while others believe capital punishment is right and is needed to the deterrence of crime. This is a very controversial issue and brings up many different points of views from many different people. Some argue that murderers should be executed and pay for the crimes they’ve committed while others believe life imprisonment is suffice. The Catholic Church condemns this type of punishment but those who have been victimized, including their families, are crying for justice to be served. Another argument is that the methods used for capital punishment is against the Eight Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Is the death penalty immoral or is...

...2011 Strayer University Abstract There is proof to present and statistical research to render that a motorcyclist wearing a helmet will not prevent head injuries or death in a serious crash. Using several studies provided by Charles Branas and Margaret Knudson, I will show that individual states with and without helmet laws show little difference in the effectiveness of a helmet in a crash. Many riders that I, myself have ridden with would rather have the choice of utilizing a helmet or not. Reasoning behind the abolishment of universal helmet law will be provided from a report filed by the National Transportation Safety Board, showing that helmets do not always protect adult riders in crashes. In some instances, helmets restrict a rider’s peripheral vision, as well as restrict their hearing depending on the style of the helmet used. Using a report written by Andreas Muller, PhD, I will stimulate the audience to believe that any type of helmet laws for adults will not reduce the number of deaths to motorcyclists. Helmet Usage: Should It Be Required for Adults Motorcycle helmet laws are not in effect in all of the fifty states. Over the last several decades motorcyclists’ deaths and severe injuries have increased significantly. There are many factors to account for the increase of injury and/or death to riders. Research has previously shown that a motorcyclists’ helmet will not protect an adult from most major injuries during a crash while riding a motorcycle. There are...

...Before the battle of Berlin, in the final days of the war on the 22nd of April 1945, before his death, Hitler received news that the orders that he had issued to SS-General Felix Steiner to move Army Detachment Steiner to Berlin to help defend the city had been dismissed, this failure to obey orders would have made Berlin a much easier city to take, being as it was an unexpected attack by the Russians. When Hitler was notified of his General’s actions (or lack of actions) he made a speech to the public saying that he’d stay in the city and then at the end he would shoot himself. Later on the same day, he asked his physician Dr. Werner Haase the most reliable method to commit suicide, Haase recommended the “pistol and poison method” and said that it was probably the safest. By the 27th of April Berlin had lost radio communication with all defending units, Führerbunker Command Staff had to rely on telephone communication...

...use it and some you shouldn’t. I’m going to give you both sides and my opinions on capital punishment also facts on this controversial punishment. The first side I’m going to give you is that capital punishment is ultimate denial of human rights and that two wrongs don’t make a right. What this means is that by killing the person doesn’t change what he did and by killing him goes against everything we live for. Giving him the death penalty essentially says he is not a human and doesn’t not have right to live on this Earth. In my opinion this quote shows how amiss capital punishment is. The U.S hasn’t always practiced capital punishment but since it became recognized by the Constitution in 1776 there have been a total of 1281 executions. That is 1281 more people that have had their life decided on by fate and not by a group of jurors. Our justice system isn’t one hundred percent, which means we have no idea how many innocent people our justice system has murdered from capital punishment? Study’s say that thousands of people are falsely convicted each year even with our technology. I asked myself after I read that, why do we keep capital punishment then? If we are convicting that many innocent people and we know, what is the point to keep it? It makes our government look inhumane and like a half breed of Hitler and Ed Gein. Another sickening thought is what if the convict is mentally ill? They don’t need to put to death; they need help in a hospital, but even with the most advanced...
