For centuries human beings have waged a war on infectious disease. An insidious threat, they have the ability to cripple the human species. We are both fascinated with its effects and its origins as we are afraid of it. It is no wonder that human beings spend an enormous amount of time on disease prevention and eradication. The Marian Koshland Science Museum, located in Washington D.C, explores current scientific issues that are extremely important to the nation’s-and the world’s-public policy. One such scientific exploration is on infectious disease, focusing on both origin and prevention. The main point, it would appear, would be to instill a sense of awareness within the person viewing the exhibit. This means that those who are able to vaccinate…show more content… However something that had struck me when we had discussed the aftermath of the bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the imagery. The children hurt from radiation-or from the bomb itself-had found their immune systems plummeted, making them susceptible to disease. The immune system is vulnerable to radiation immediately after exposure. This meant that those few survivors, like in Hiroshima by John Hersey, had to endure more than just the bomb. They had to deal with a weakened immune system. This exhibit is trying to hammer in the importance of disease prevention through vaccination. The point of the film White Light, Black Rain was essentially “never again.” No one wants what happened in Hiroshima to happen again. No one wants what happened during the Black Plague to happen again. This is why this exhibits exists. It exists to explain-through a healthy dose of fear-how to prevent disease and why their prevention is so…show more content… Disease prevention through vaccination, while not the end-all-be-all solution, would help. To reiterate what I had said in the beginning of the paper, we are waging a war on diseases. It’s been this way for a significant amount of time. Virus’ and bacteria mutate, become increasingly resistant to the antibiotics in our disposal. This exhibit is explaining the significance of vaccinations in disease prevention and I agree with it wholeheartedly. This is apparently a controversial issue, in it that there are some people who believe that vaccinations are causes autism and other mental health defects. Not only is this incorrect and has been disproven long ago, but it carries a really harmful message that puts other people at risk. The simulation about how quickly measles would spread if 2% fewer people were vaccinated was astonishing. The dots on the screen (that indicated people infected) had risen sharply and shown quickly when compared to the normal state that was shown to you in the
