...Quiz Question for “The Most Dangerous Game” Was Rainsford justified to kill Ivan? In the book, “The Pearl”, Kino killed a man because the man tried to take his most prized possession; the pearl. This relates to the short story, “The MostDangerous Game” because Rainsford killed General Zarnoff’s assistant Ivan. People come to the conclusion Rainsford should not have killed Ivan because Ivan was merely following the orders of General Zarnoff. In the past, a situation similar to this one occurred. A man called Adolf Hitler and his Nazis killed many people in Germany and the countries around it. These Nazis were "just taking orders” when they were murdering these men, women, and children. It is unacceptable and unjustifiable that the Nazis did so much damage, but they cannot tell themselves and others that they were following orders because in their hearts they know that they did what they did. Rainsford was justified to kill Ivan. General Zarnoff had forced him into playing his game, in which no one has won before. Rainsford was trying to save his life and by doing so, he killed Ivan. Rainsford helped future victims of the general’s game. He ensured a small amount of safety on the island without Ivan’s presence because now General Zarnoff does not have an assistant helping him kill innocent people. General Zarnoff violated his role in the castle by hunting human beings. Hunting human beings is an unnatural task and led to the island’s nickname being the Ship Trap. Rainsford...

...H “I am a survivor and not a victim. Life isn’t perfect. When you get knocked down you have to get up, dust yourself off, and get on with life.”-Patsy Kensit. B In the articles, (Lee) “My Escape From North Korea”, (Ralston) “Trapped”, and (Conell) “The Most Dangerous Game”, what they all have in common is that they are all survivors. T All three of these survivors showed qualities of being a survivor such as bravery, determination, and strategy. C Primarily, in “My Escape From North Korea”, Lee shows that to be a survivor you have to have bravery. E This Quote is a good example of bravery, ”Since my family understand Chinese, I thought my family was going to be arrested. As the Chinese officer approached my family, I… told him that these are deaf...

It's rather a mystery—" "What island is it?" Rainsford asked. "The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island,"' Whitney replied." A suggestive name, isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don't know why. Some superstition—" "Can't see it," remarked Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht. ...The theory of “hunt or be hunted” is an idea often discussed and debated. Some state that it is always present, in some shape or form, while others argue that it does not apply to all circumstances. In The Most Dangerous Game, the hunter/hunted ideology is a prominent component. In the story, General Zaroff actually hunts Rainsford in a sort of game, hence, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Though this story is a clear example of the hunter/hunted complex in action, it is only one example. In another circumstance, the hunter/hunted complex would be irrelevant and therefore absent. In this particular story, a man called General Zaroff serves as the hunter. In the beginning, and even before the game begins, Zaroff boasts about his intelligence against the animals he’d hunted before. One example of his gasconade would be “Simply this: Hunting had ceased to be what you call ‘a sporting proposition.’ It had become too easy. I always got my quarry.(pg 234)” This quote portrays Zaroff’s pride and skill in being a hunter, along with his detachment to the game he hunts. Preceding this event, Zaroff himself states, “God makes some men poets. Some He makes kings, some beggars. Me He...

...The Most Dangerous Game In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” a hunter and another hunter gets hunted. General Zaroff met another hunter in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” named Rainsford. Rainsford fell off his yacht and ends up having to swim to shore. Rainsford ends up being hunted by General Zaroff. They start to put the skills against each other. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” there is a saying that there are two classes the hunters and the prey. I agree with the statement because it’s describing how the statement works in hunting. Who were the hunters in the story? “I read all books on hunting published in English and in Russian. I have but one passion and that is hunting Mr.Rainsford and it is the hunt.” The hunters in...

...The Most Dangerous Game essay In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” (Richard Connell) Rainsford ends up being hunted by General Zaroff. After Rainsford falls off his yacht, on his way to hunt, he takes refuge on Zaroff’s island. As Rainsford is trying to find shelter on the island he sees lights in the jungle and walks toward them. When he finds the source of the lights he knocks on the door of Zaroff’s mansion. Following Rainsford knocking on the heavy door, Ivan answers it without a word, Rainsford is allowed to stay there and get better. Even though Zaroff let Rainsford stay at his mansion and get better he cannot be trusted. In this gruesome story the prey are human beings. “Civilized? And you shoot down men?” (Connell, page 226) Zaroff has been hunting since he was a small child, he started getting to the point where hunting had begun to bore him. So he made a new type of “game”, and his game is...

...Critique “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Edward Connell, is a suspenseful story full of conflict and strategy. The details and events in the story are written in a way that express stereotyping and discrimination. Although the author is extremely biased throughout the story, it is considered his best piece of literature. This story is about a world renowned hunter, Sanger Rainsford, who is sailing to Brazil to hunt jaguars. As his ship passes Ship Trap Island, he accidently falls overboard and manages to swims ashore. There he discovers a mansion occupied by a Russian Cossack General Zaroff and his deaf mute servant Ivan. The General, an excellent hunter himself, has become bored of hunting animals so he lures ships to his island and captures and hunts the sailors for his entertainment. When Rainsford refuses to join in hunting other humans, he becomes one of the hunted. He is given three days to try to elude capture from the General, Ivan, and his hounds. After the three days have passed and he has outsmarted the General and avoided being captured, the general honors him and presumably lets him go. First, the author discreetly displays his prejudice views, by establishing the main characters as white men, wealthy, fit, and healthy. This subtly discriminates against anyone not white, wealthy, or able-bodied. Next he sets both evil characters, Ivan and General Zaroff, as Russians, the author speaks this out when after Rainsford asks the General of Ivan’s nationality...

...“To Build A Fire” and Richard Connell’s, “The Most Dangerous Game”. The comparisons will be constructed of the settings, characters, and conflict. First topic to be compared is conflict. The two stories share two conflicts, a struggle for survival. In Jack London’s “To Build A Fire” the main character, not named, thinks in his head, “Without doubt he would lose some fingers and toes and some of his face…” (London 703). In the same manner, the main character, named Rainsford, kills a dog and the “bad guy” says to him “… I’ll see what you can do against my whole pack” (Connell 28). However, the two stories differ in what they struggle against. In “To Build A Fire” the conflict is person versus nature. For example the guy builds a fire and from the spruce tree falls some snow and puts out the fire; to quote “He should not have built the fire under the spruce tree” (London 700). Meanwhile, in “The Most Dangerous Game” the conflict is person versus person which is Rainsford being hunted down by General Zaroff-the “bad guy”- in the middle of a baron island. To quote from General Zaroff “Your strength and stamina against mine” (Connell 24). Secondly, literary item number two is setting. In both stories the setting is set in isolated places. Like in “To Build A Fire” its set in the Yukon in the middle of winter. To validate that “The Yukon lay a mile wide and hidden under three feet of ice” (London 694). Also in “The Most Dangerous Game” the setting is in the Caribbean on an island...

...At any moment what you may say or do will come back at you to prove you wrong. This statement can be shown in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. The author Richard provides us with a dynamic protagonist, Rainsford, that is a animal hunter and is a famous book writer for hunters all around the world. However, when Rainsford is on a trip passing by Ship Trap Island, he falls overboard and ends up landing on the island, which is home to a hunter named General Zaroff, in order to escape the island Rainsford has to be hunted down by General Zaroff or tortured by his minion Ivan. But even though Rainsford chose to be hunted down and tries to capture General Zaroff, he doesn't know that General Zaroff knows most of the strategies that Rainsford knows. Rainsford, through the series of events in the story, was a non-believer of superstition, fearful for his life, and had a new understanding for the feeling of animals. A trait from the protagonist Rainsford, is that he does not believe in superstition. Rainsford believe the superstition is just part of In the story the most dangerous game by Richard Connell the protagonist Rainsford does not believe in superstition. ...In the “Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell the attribute that made Rainsford win the same was cleverness because he surprised the general at his house. He was on a ship to Rio de Janeiro to hunt jaguars. On his way there he started to hear gunshots in the distance he wanted to see if he could find it but when he looked he fell overboard. He swam to the island and that were the game of survival began. Rainsford making the man catcher to try to kill or trap zaroff helped him in his fight. It also took a lot of energy for him to make. “He saw a dead tree lying on top of a live one and got his knife out and began to work with all his energy”. (Connell 26) Rainsford built the malay mancatcher about 300 yards away from his hiding spot. He left a trail for zaroff to follow so he can fall into his trap. “Rainsford built the malay mancatcher about 300 yards away from his hiding spot.” (Connell 26) Zaroff got injured while following the trail rainsford left, he hurt his shoulder because he quickly got out of the way he was supposed to be dead. He had to return to his house to treat his wounds....

...Many people look at themselves in the mirror and say, " I know who I am." But how many of them have done so after analyzing themselves through a story? And if they have done that, how many of them were being honest with themselves? A Lacanian analysis can bring out sides of us that we didn't know existed. I found this to be true after reading "The Most Dangerous Game." By looking at the events in the story and the characters that play them out, I found that there is a part of me that has an insatiable curiosity and a love of danger. To begin with, by looking closely at the main characters and their actions, I found a small part of myself in each of them. When Rainsford heard gunshots from the yacht, he jumped up onto the ship's railing. My initial response was, "Why would you do such a thing when no one is there to help if you fall?" I believe that this was my logical, sensible reaction. However, if I look at the situation with a sense of curiosity I find that I would have done the same thing. I think this is because, even though I've always tried to be a responsible, reasoning person, I have always had a desire to be carefree and daring. I think that want comes from movies I've seen in the past and books I've read in which the female characters were adventurous and lived for danger. I can remember times when I would finish reading a book, perhaps, and try to be just like the adventuring character. I can also look at General Zaroff, too, and see a hidden facet...

...Suspense causes readers to want to read. This is clear in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell as the tension captures readers. Through the usage of Chekov’s Gun, foreshadowing, and imagery, Connell is able to create a suspenseful story. First, Connell uses Chekov’s Gun to create suspense. Rainsford and Whitney talk casually about hunting; however, what they talk about becomes critical to the rest of the story. “The world is made of two class- the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters” (1). However, Rainsford who said that learns the feeling of being hunted. After using Chekov’s gun, Connell uses foreshadowing to create suspense. Secondly, Connell uses foreshadowing to create tension in the story. Instead of directly...
