...Metaphor for Telling It has been countless years since I have watched a movie about Native Americans, and even longer since I have witnessed a decent one. Most films on the subject of the Native American people are often set in the past and are habitually on the subject of brave Indian warriors. I had never viewed a Native American motion picture filmed in a present day setting, dealing with contemporary issues until I watched Smoke Signals. In the movie Smoke Signals, co-producer and scriptwriter Sherman Alexie uses unexpected humor, numerous significant flashbacks, and modernized Native American storytelling traditions to best narrate his story and the historical plight of Native Americans. First of all, Alexie employs wit by mocking stereotypical reservation life, the frequently biased film industry, and even his own people, the Native Americans. After fighting in the brutal Trojan War, Odysseus travels the sea in hopes of returning to Ithaca, his homeland, and his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. Homer’s The Odyssey reveals the struggles and obstacles Odysseus and his men face traveling home. As prophesized, twenty years later, Odysseus returns to a devastated Ithaca, alone, penniless and unrecognizable. Odysseus has hubris, a flaw that costs him, as well his men, excessive troubles. Odysseus does not learn from his and others’ past mistakes, again leading him into traps that could have easily been avoided. Odysseus constantly puts his men in harm’s way for selfish purposes. For these reasons, Odysseus is an incompetent leader, and therefore should be criticized. Odysseus has hubris. This excessive pride and arrogance leads Odysseus and his men into difficult situations that would not have otherwise arisen. Towards the beginning of Homer’s epic, Odysseus narrowly escapes from a Cyclops’ cave. In triumphant victory, Odysseus taunts the Cyclops, Polyphemus. This chapter of her life is set in 1938, during the time of the civil war in the historically rich European and Spanish speaking country, Spain. The movie gives insight of this historical event through the eyes of Carol, and we also see how the war affects her and her loved ones. By the tender age of twelve Carol tries to adjust and settle into what seems to be her new life in Spain and takes both the challenges and joys that face her throughout the movie. While watching “Carol’s Journey” I was charmed and intrigued by the characters and their relationships, the culture and old customs of the country. After the movie I felt moved and inspired and I would recommend this movie to anyone. My favorite characters beside Carol are Tomiche and her grandfather, Don Amalio. Firstly, Carol is one of my favorite characters because she is very outgoing, tough, stern minded and sweet, a lot like how I was when I was her age.
