...Metaphor for Telling It has been countless years since I have watched a movie about Native Americans, and even longer since I have witnessed a decent one. Most films on the subject of the Native American people are often set in the past and are habitually on the subject of brave Indian warriors. I had never viewed a Native American motion picture filmed in a present day setting, dealing with contemporary issues until I watched Smoke Signals. In the movie Smoke Signals, co-producer and scriptwriter Sherman Alexie uses unexpected humor, numerous significant flashbacks, and modernized Native American storytelling traditions to best narrate his story and the historical plight of Native Americans. First of all, Alexie employs wit by mocking stereotypical reservation life, the frequently biased film industry, and even his own people, the Native Americans. From the opening scene as tribal meteorologist and traffic reporter Lester Falls Apart covers his seemingly uneventful daily traffic report, as he has for the last twenty-six years, from the rooftop of his broken down KREZ van, we are introduced to the odd and amusing way of life on the “rez.” In another scene, Victor and Thomas are embarking on their solemn journey and are offered a ride by Thelma and Lucy driving down the road in reverse; again, it is suggested that they exist in a somewhat backwards nation. In addition, Alexie is quick to taunt the movie industry by belittling white cowboy heroes; he even goes so far as to ridicule...

Of Mice And Men Movie Analysis

...Of Mice and Men is a great book written by John Steinbeck in 1937 and this movie ruins it, from starting in Weed to having the work mantashe. Not all of the movie was bad though. The acting for George (Gary Sinise) and Lennie (John Malkovich) was good, Malkovich played Leenie the way I always thought of him, but Ray Watson (Candy) and Sherilyn Fenn (Curley’s wife), had no emotion the could have been cardboard cutouts. The main problem was they tried to take a simple story and make it into a dramatic movie. Clearly it didn’t work.. The music often didn’t go with the mood of the scene. The cinematography wasn’t great ether, often zooming in when it should have shown you the whole scene. Or sometimes even showing something else when a conversation...

A Character Analysis Of Wit By E. M. Vivian

...M. is really in the hospital visiting Vivian. In the movie, E. M. seems magical and a part of Vivian’s imagination. This is due in part to the way the directors producers made E. M.’s entrance. Vivian is alone on her bed and there is no one around the hospital, when suddenly E. M. walks into the room. In an earlier scene in the movie, we see Vivian and E. M. having a conversation as a professor and student. E. M.’s in the hospital looks very similar to the way she looked, 20 years prior. This gives the audience a hint that Vivian is imagining this whole encounter. In both the play and the movie Vivian is dosing in and out of sleep, which shows that she might be having small dreams about her life. Shortly after E. M. visits Vivian, Vivian dies in the hospital. Readers and watchers are able to read or see this important scene in Wit, but it is much clearer in the movie...

Three Main Types of Movies

...Eva Liao 10052115 Writing 4A Three Main Types of Movies Movie is considered to be one of the most marvelous productions in human history since 19th century. People living in the old times find pleasure through reading books, watching plays and musicals. Reading a book needs imagination to see the scenes in mind and watching a musical requires sitting in a certain seat in a theater. Both of them cannot gain the advantages of watching movies; people can enjoy a film with colorful, realistic silver screen and even without leaving the comfort of their homes. Therefore, nowadays, movie seems to be the most popular entertainment for people at all ages, and there are three major types of movies people prefer to watch: comedy, romance, and horror movies. Comedy movie is always our best friend who takes our sorrow away and tickles us until we laugh to death. Generally speaking, no matter how old you are, you can always share the joyfulness with your family, friends by watching a comedy. Movie Analysis: The Princess Bride

...weeks we read The Princess Bride and watched the movie. They were both interesting and intriguing. In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting the movie from the book. I will explain what the movie lacked or what the book added. This paper will explore how different the book and movie were from each other. I will discuss the difference between Princess Buttercup and Westley. At the beginning of the book, Buttercup was always rude and made Westley do all her chores, “Farm Boy, fetch me this,” Buttercup said. One day, when the Count and Countess came to visit, Buttercup realized that she was in love with Westley. She told him how she felt and Westley seemed as if he didn’t feel the same way, “I love you,” Buttercup said, but Westley just closed the door without saying a word. The next day Westley told Buttercup that he was going to America for a better life and that they would meet again. The movie was similar but not quite like the book; Buttercup was rude to Westley but that was not explained in the movie, “As you wish,” Westley would always respond with. The Count and Countess never went to her house, but when Buttercup told Westley that she was in love with him, Westley felt...

...books that the people hide from the society. So there is a fireman which name is Montag, he is the kind of people whose search books to burn them. So he was doing his job well until one day he went to a house to burn the books, but the problem was that not only did the books get burned, also an old women get burned wit h the fire of the books because she put them on fire with her in the middle of the books. After that Montag starts reading books and here is the controversy, because a fireman who is supposed to burn books also has some books to read them. So that kind of summary that I did it before it could be applied for the book and the movie. So I will start talking about some difference between the book and the novel. Clarisse is one of the principal characters of the book and novel, but between both there are a lot of differences talking about her. First of all, Clarisse in the novel is 17 years old and she was a student, but in the movie she has 22 and she was a teacher, the only similarity in this is that in both cases she was dismissed from the school, for apparent “antisocialism”. Also Clarisse in the novel she was killed by a fast car, and in the movie she escaped out of the city after her family was captured. Talking about Montag, there is no Mechanical Hound in the novel which “betrays” Montag is the pole. Other difference between the novel and the book is that the name of Montag’s wife in the novel is Mildred, and in the film is Linda. So this started to question...

Odyssey

...THE ODYSSEY Is a good leader classified as one who personally gains a lot or one who benefits his or her community at large? After fighting in the brutal Trojan War, Odysseus travels the sea in hopes of returning to Ithaca, his homeland, and his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. Homer’s The Odyssey reveals the struggles and obstacles Odysseus and his men face traveling home. As prophesized, twenty years later, Odysseus returns to a devastated Ithaca, alone, penniless and unrecognizable. Odysseus has hubris, a flaw that costs him, as well his men, excessive troubles. Odysseus does not learn from his and others’ past mistakes, again leading him into traps that could have easily been avoided. Odysseus constantly puts his men in harm’s way for selfish purposes. For these reasons, Odysseus is an incompetent leader, and therefore should be criticized.    Odysseus has hubris. This excessive pride and arrogance leads Odysseus and his men into difficult situations that would not have otherwise arisen. Towards the beginning of Homer’s epic, Odysseus narrowly escapes from a Cyclops’ cave. In triumphant victory, Odysseus taunts the Cyclops, Polyphemus.  His men advise him against further agitating Polyphemus after the Cyclops starts throwing massive boulders at their ship; however, Odysseus displays hubris and does not listen. ‘Godsake, Captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone!’ ‘Aye He’ll smash our timbers and our heads together!’ / I would not heed them...

Carols Journey

...Adrianne Kelly SPA 104; Section 02 Ms. C. Hernandez “Carol’s Journey” The movie “Carol’s Journey (El viaje de Carol)”, tells the life changing and heartfelt story of a young and strong character by the name of Carol. This chapter of her life is set in 1938, during the time of the civil war in the historically rich European and Spanish speaking country, Spain. The movie gives insight of this historical event through the eyes of Carol, and we also see how the war affects her and her loved ones. By the tender age of twelve Carol tries to adjust and settle into what seems to be her new life in Spain and takes both the challenges and joys that face her throughout the movie. While watching “Carol’s Journey” I was charmed and intrigued by the characters and their relationships, the culture and old customs of the country. After the movie I felt moved and inspired and I would recommend this movie to anyone. My favorite characters beside Carol are Tomiche and her grandfather, Don Amalio. Firstly, Carol is one of my favorite characters because she is very outgoing, tough, stern minded and sweet, a lot like how I was when I was her age. However, she is rebellious, in more good ways than bad which makes her character courageous, unpredictable and fun. Tomiche, “Tomi”, is my second favorite because he represents strong males, both young and old, who hustle and use their wits to make nothing into something for not just themselves but for their loved ones, such as his own mother. The...
