...Chuck Dexter. This year I learned more about God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit, the Church, and myself more than I ever could have without confirmation. This year I learned that God works in very mysterious ways and I know this because before my family moved here because we got robbed and that was why we moved here. I felt like I could not connect with God at my old church and ever since we moved here my understanding of the bible and my faith have grown tenfold. I believe God works in mysterious ways and the situation my family went through, helped our faith grow stronger. Because of the issues we faced, our faith is very strong. Now because of that I want to help others as much I can in any way possible whether it is a conversation or a lunch at McDonald’s because you’d be surprised how one little thing could mean the world to someone else. I believe that we each have a purpose. I believe that we all have God whispering in our ears. I believe that we all can push past the limits of our faith. I believe that we all can be more than who we think we are. I believe that we can help others. I believe that God, who is our leader and creator, chose Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and to bridge the gap between our souls and the kingdom of heaven. I believe that Jesus is the gatekeeper to the kingdom of heaven and that he died on the cross so that we could have eternal life. I believe that I am being guided by the Holy Spirit to be more like Jesus. I believe that the...

...Introduction Although Samuel Taylor Coleridge is one of the major literary figures of the Romantic movement in England, as a poet his reputation stands on primarily just three works, " The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "," and "Kubla Khan." All three were written between 1797 and 1800; however, was not published until 1816. At that time, Coleridge subtitled it "A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment," and added a prefatory note explaining the unusual origin of the poem. This preface describes how Coleridge, after taking some opium as medication, grew drowsy while reading a passage about the court of Kubla Khan in Samuel Purchas's , a seventeenth-century travel book recounting the adventures of early explorers. Soon he fell into a deep sleep which lasted about three hours. During this period, he composed from 200 to 300 lines of poetry based on the vivid images in his dream. When he woke, he remembered the entire poem and immediately began to write it down. Unfortunately, however, a visitor interrupted him, distracting him for about an hour. When Coleridge returned to his writing, the vivid images had fled, leaving him with only vague recollections and the fifty-four lines of this poetic fragment. Many critics challenge the truthfulness of Coleridge's version of this story, feeling that the poem is complete as it stands and much too carefully crafted to be solely the result of a dream. However, whether whole or fragment, dream or not, the poem examines issues of vital importance to...

...Why don't we just swim over and then pop up on them by surprise." The other argued and they began grumbling and bickering back and forth for a bit. Trying to decide on the best route, but before long and they agreed to cross the harbor to a short pier and dash around it to the other side, scrambled up the steep rocky slope, and enter through the back of the tower. I tagged along behind and their plan worked like a charm, except for inside there were three mysterious half women and half birdlike creatures with long flowing red locks who were singing such sweet songs that the trolls were entranced and forgot about everything including me. I luckily was impervious to their bewitching voices which was probably part of the aftereffects of the magic dust. Still under the trolls spell I watched as the lovely creatures lulled the grotesque monsters into a glassy eyed daze and then a into deep sleepy slumber. And once the magic powders wore off I wished myself back home and poof I was...

...becoming the Thane of Cawdor and then, the King. Macbeth has his military advancements to thank, and maybe the witches, for his sudden rise to glory. I wanted to design his sudden power in my designing of the throne. The moment Macbeth is crowned king his paranoia sets in and everything the witches said to Macbeth becomes a reality. I feel this moment is pivotal because it drives Macbeth's’ insanity and actions thereafter his crowning. This moment exactly I portrayed with the bamboo red and green structure lining the proscenium. In Japan the color red means danger, the color green means comfort in everyday life and the color black means a mysterious or evil threat . Macbeth is met in his everyday life by the mysterious witches and the break away from his comfortable life makes him a danger to those in his kingdom and ironically the same mysterious danger Macbeth is met with, he becomes just that himself. Within Macbeth’s newfound dangerously evil nature, he develops a proud sense of self which he most portrays in killing Banquo and Macduff’s family all to show that no one and nothing can stop Macbeth. This proud backbone is where I developed the Japanese screen of the peacock idea from because of the peacock symbolising pride and nobility. The reason I decided not to use curtains was to create the atmosphere of the outdoors which is why I then instead created the bamboo portals. The bamboo creates a simply display that in turn adds to the harmonious coexistence of nature and architecture...

...planted firmly on the ground, with rigid knees, and the left leg placed slightly in front of the other. Egyptian art also incorporated certain fictions in order to express a larger truth, as an example, the beautifully shape of the pharaohs will mostly show the image of the ideal leader of Egypt, even if he/she is not exactly like that in reality, the message that the sculpture will pass is the power and magnificence. The great age of mature ancient Egyptian civilization can be divided into three periods: Old Kingdom - in this time period the Sphinx and Great Pyramid at Giza were built; the royal statues emphasize the majesty and divinity of the pharaoh. A curious detail about the colors used in sculptures is that usually to differ male from female, the artisans would utilize brown(men) and yellow(women), emphasizing that men were mostly likely working under the sun, while women were protected indoors ; this period is also referred to as the Pyramid age; The Middle Kingdom - in this dynasty the distinctive works are a series of royal statues that reflect a subtle change in the Egyptian concept of kingship, since the power no longer depended upon the divine authority of the pharaoh but on the military force, in this period...

...Brenna Kern TH109 Final Exam 1. According to Catholic belief, a human person consists of a body and soul, both of which were made specifically for each and every one of us. Humans were created in the image and likeness of God and are to partake in God’s immortal life. However, to do so, we as humans must be able to love and must be open to accepting God. What distinguishes a human from an animal is that we have personal freedom to make decisions, also known as “free will” and are able to rationalize. The soul that is within us is the “mysterious power of life” (Albl, 176) that is given to us at birth directly by God himself. Anthropological Dualism, divides the human body and soul, and views the body as just a “housing” for the soul. This view would portray that the soul is not a necessity for our identity as a human. Conversely, Christian anthropology believes that the human body and soul are to be together, as a whole, and the soul would not be complete without the individual body it was created for. Christians believe that even after death, we will eventually be unified with our unique soul. As humans, our ultimate destiny is to be sorry for our wrong doing and fully accept God into our bodies and souls. We are to choose God, give ourselves to him, rely on him, and be open and honest with him. However, our salvation is not only within ourselves but relies on our faith in Christ. Through purgatory we can continue to “cleanse” ourselves of our wrong doing before...

She was never sad, and is always smiling, as her kingdom is affluent, full of wealth, power, and dignity. One late evening, she heard a small noise out from the outside of her room. It was a small tiny noise she didn’t really notice at first, but it occurred again. She wondered what it was, so she walked outside to check what it was. Once she got onto her balcony, the bright moon light hit her body. She felt lighted up. The stars are sparkling like ice cubes, with the backdrop of the sky which was glowing blue. The mysterious noise repeated again, and with more distinct of frustration. It was the small sparrow under the full moon. Elizabeth stood there and kept observing the sparrow. The sparrow kept making the frustrating sound, and never got onto the branch, and keeps flying around near the tree. Her sound was sharp, long, and seems like she’s longing for someone. She sounded like she is singing to someone to come to her. The bird seem painfully isolated comparing to the fulfilled moon with it’s company of sparkling stars. Looking at the sparrow, Elizabeth felt the dryness. Then came a male sparrow. It flew up to the tree where the other sparrow was. Elizabeth couldn’t hear anymore frustrating sound from the sparrow. ...King Arthur is a mysterious figure thought to be from the sixth century AD. He was the King of Britain for thirty years and during that time consolidated all the smaller kingdoms into the one country today known as England. He also founded The Order of the Round Table, a collection of knights that helped rule the kingdom. The help they provided was as counselors to the King, and as the military defense for the country. He was best known for his repelling the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons. This is ironic because much of England today is descendent from the Anglo-Saxons. Arthur was the illegitimate son for the King Uther Pendragon, Arthur's predecessor, and Igraine of Cornwall, Gorlois' wife, one of Uther's generals. When he was born, he was taken away and raised by Sir Hector, in the Forest Sauvage(White 50). When he was a but a teen, he went to London with Hector and his son Kay. While they were there Arthur pulled a magical sword from an anvil in a churchyard. The sword had appeared many years before to mark the new king. Whoever pulled it out would take the throne. During his reign, Britain became a very prosperous nation. The knights of the Table achieved many wonderful new things, as did the general population. Arthur's rule ended because of the power of corruption that hiding things has. Lancelot, a knight, and Guenevere, Arthur's wife, were having an affair. The affair was not publicly admitted, and everything was going okay. Then some knights confronted Lancelot and...

...many ways, but they can also be similar in so many ways as well. Hero’s are often the strongest, smartest, and most looked up to people in their village or country. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting two great warriors who have earned to become a hero. Beowulf, and the character from the 13th warrior are two amazing hero’s that have a lot of courage and strength for their people and their own soul. Beowulf came to be considered a hero when he hears the tragic story of king Hrothgar. Afterwards he sailed to Denmark to help out the helpless king Hrothgar and his army who have been attacked many times by the cruel Grendel. Grendel in the story is considered to be a horrible demon that lives in the swamplands of Hrothgar’s kingdom. Grendel attacked the warriors because of the noise they made when they were in Heorot. Therefore Grendel terrorized the warriors every night, killing them and defeating their efforts to fight back. Beowulf who at the time was inspired by the story he heard went with some of his closest companions, and asks the great king Hrothgar if he could fight the mean devil Grendel, and without a doubt the helpless king accepts the offer. At last Grendel arrives, to a feast the king held for Beowulf brave remark. Beowulf fights him unarmed, proving himself stronger than the demon, who is terrified. As Grendel struggles to escape, Beowulf tears the monster’s arm off. Badly wounded, Grendel escapes back into the swamp to die. The severed arm is hung...
