STAFFING PROCEDURE

HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING - Is a process that identifies current and future human resources needs for an organization to achieve its goals. Human resources planning should serve as a link between human resources management and the overall strategic plan of an organization.

HR Planning Process
It demands the HR manager to first understand the business requirement. Only if he comprehends the nature and scope of the business, will he be able to employ those who will deliver the required performance. When it comes to engaging the manpower, the manager should have a keen eye for spotting the talent. It ensures that the workforce is competent enough the meet the targets.

While recruiting the new employees, the HR manager must calculate the expected workload. This way the HR department can design an accurate job profile and job expectations. Once you have the decided job descriptions, looking for candidates who fit the job will be easy. Don't be fooled by their qualifications, it is only the relevant experience that matters more. A good HR manager is one who has the zeal and passion to motivate his prospective employees to perform to their potential.

RECRUITMENT - Refers to the process of attracting, screening, and selecting a qualified person for a job. All companies in any industry can benefit from contingency or retain professional recruiters or outsourcing the process to recruitment agencies.

Recruitment Process
For positions of one year, which are subject to a vacancy announcement (VN), recruitment can take from 2 to 4 months. The recruitment procedure includes:

• Publication of vacancy (3 to 4 weeks)
• Screening of applicants
• Interviewing short-listed applicants
• Selection recommendation
• Review at the Appointment and Posting Board

National Bookstore

...I. Introduction Luck is only a small part of National Book Store's success. Through the hard work and powerful leadership of Socorro Cancio-Ramos and the late Jose Ramos with their family, the company has evolved from its humble beginnings into the biggest and strongest bookstore chain in the Philippines. The first National Book Store started as a stall shop in Escolta before the Japanese occupation selling supplies, GI novels, and textbooks. When war broke out, strict book censorship forced them to shift their trade to soap, candies, and slippers. They bought their merchandise from wholesalers and peddled them to smaller retailers. Liberation came, but the whole Escolta area was burned to the ground. Having all their stocks reduced to ashes left the couple with nothing but determination and an undying drive to succeed. And their persistence paid off. They were able to rebuild a barong-barong in the corner of Soler and Avenida Rizal in time to catch the post-war business boom. They went back to business using their door as a counter for selling textbooks, notebooks, pad paper, and pencils. Business went very well because during that time, there were only a few stores that sold school supplies and books. National Book Store's opening was strategically timed to welcome the first postwar school year. 1948 brought another trial to the Ramos' life. Typhoon Gene destroyed their store and soaked all the merchandise. But this did not dampen the spirit and tenacity of the couple...

...Organizational behavior is an academic discipline concerned with describing, understanding, predicting, and controlling human behavior in an organizational environment. Organizational behavior has evolved from early classical management theories into a complex school of thought—and it continues to change in response to the dynamic environment andproliferating corporate cultures in which today's businesses operate. "The task of getting organizations to function effectively is a difficult one," wrote David A. Nadler and Michael L. Tushman in Hackman, Lawler, and Porter's Perspectives on Behaviors in Organizations. "Understanding one individual's behavior is a challenging problem in and of itself. A group, made up of different individuals and multiple relationships among those individuals, is even more complex…. In the fact of this overwhelming complexity, organizational behavior must be managed. Ultimately the work of organizations gets done through the behavior of people, individually or collectively, on their own or in collaboration with technology. Thus, central to the management task is the management of organizational behavior. To do this, there must be the capacity to understand the patterns of behavior at individual, group, and organization levels, to predict what behavior responses will be elicited by different managerial actions, and finally to use understanding and prediction to achieve control." The Behavioral Sciences Organizational behavior scientists study four primary...

Nature of National Bookstore

...Nature of the Business National Bookstore is the leading retail chain of books and other supplies in the Philippines. Since their main targets are the students and office people, they provide them their “basic needs” with affordable prices. Aside from school and office supplies, they also offer equipment, gift items, toys, and room decorations. And during special days or events, they offer special items in compliance to the occasion. For example, they offer Christmas decorations and gifts during the “-ber” months and they offer gifts appropriate during the Valentine season. Furthermore, they also offer some services like printing, photocopying, lamination, binding, balloon making and many more. The business is open to keep their products modernized, by updating its shares and scouts from around the world for different sources. It holds on to current buyers’ needs, adding variety of products. Also, to encourage buyers to purchase their merchandise, they allow leisure reading. Often times, the bookstore would be seen near schools and universities or communities where their customers would most likely to be found. This creates their branches more accessible for consumers and at the same time profitable. But their purpose, vision and values are more for the benefit of the consumers: “Our purpose is to serve our customers with tools that enrich their minds and improve skills to ensure their success. All our efforts are concentrated to serve this purpose. We provide the largest...

National Bookstore Industry Analysis

...CHAPTER 4 INDUSTRY AND COMPETITOR ANALYSIS Industry Analysis 4.1 Porter's Five Forces A. Rivalry among Competing Firms - Weak Rivalry among competing firms is considerably low since NBS has maintained its position on being the largest and top bookstore and distributor of the country. Moreover, there are relatively fewer sellers that any one company's actions have little direct impact on rival's business. Products of rival competitors were also somehow different in approach as to which, say, Fully Booked and Goodwill Bookstore focus on book retailing rather than offering school supplies. Even if firms compete with same books and other materials, the pricing strategy of NBS is relatively lowest among rivalry. This has been one of the advantages of NBS throughout the decades past. Lastly, competition has already transcended on internet based systems by delivering online services which fast-paced technology-driven consumers demand. Almost all competing firms have already adapt this change and continually to develop further their online marketing, promotions and strategies. B. Threat of New Entrants - Moderate Threats of new entrants for NBS is moderate since factors of relative price of substitute, low product differentiation, big switching cost to buyers, easy access to distribution channels and high capital requirement is considered. Relatively, strong partnerships with publishers would be advantageous for potential entering firms. Moreover, it is easy...

...Northlake Bookstore: Benchmarking for Performance Evaluation By: Manuel Garza Hugo Hinojosa Graciela Rodriguez Jose Garcia Alejandro Arizpe Carlos Arizpe Summary of Facts Upon assessment of the FY2004 financial information, Wendy Wiley, Northlake Bookstore’s manager, identified the first ever drop in book sales over the previous quarter. After identifying the drop in sales, Wendy turned to Chuck Irwin, the Vice Chancellor of Finance for Northlake University. He mentioned that Wendy should conduct a benchmarking analysis in order to identify the deficiencies that led to the drop in book sales. In addition, Chuck also asked Wendy to develop a set of short-term performance goals and measurements for future evaluations. Northlake is a private university located in the Midwest U.S. Annual enrollment is estimated at 12,700 students. Northlake is overwhelmingly comprised of undergraduate students. Over 60% of the university’s revenues come from student tuitions, with the majority of the remaining 40% stemming from donations and gifts. Chucks, the Vice Chancellor, is worried that the donations and gifts have decreased dramatically during the current year. He believes this is due to the current uncertain economic conditions and the stock market’s erratic performance. Wendy has been the bookstore’s manager for 7 years now. She previously worked as a Wal-Mart sales manager where she acquired15 years of experience in...
