The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a membership organization of colleges and universities whose fundamental charge is to "maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body" (NCAA 2002). This governing body of intercollegiate athletics was initially constituted as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) in 1906, following a call from President Theodore Roosevelt to eliminate the high numbers of deaths and injuries common to college football at that time.

One of the most current issues I read about in May 2014, was a letter to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) President Mark Emmert requesting information about the NCAA’s oversight of the academic preparation of student-athletes at its member colleges and universities.
The letter follows public reports suggesting that the NCAA oversees a system where its member institutions may be requiring student-athletes, particularly in high-revenue sports, to sacrifice their educational goals for the financial interests of college athletics. For example, CNN reported that between 7% and 18% of students in the basketball and football programs of more than 20 NCAA member schools could read no higher than at the eighth-grade level.
This all ties into the big Play to play issue. As an unprecedented trial over the NCAA's control on college sports got underway in the first eek on June 2014, the organization settled a separate lawsuit that for the first time pays money to tens of thousands of student-athletes beyond the scholarships they received for playing top-level college football and basketball.
The NCAA agreed to pay $20 million to resolve the case over claims the organization conspired with EA Sports to prevent football and basketball players from getting paid for use of

...The NCAA recently signed a 14 year, $10.8 billion dollar media rights deal for March Madness. Millions of fans tune in to the biggest collegiate sporting events, while thousands of others buy tickets and attend the games. For decades, the NCAA and its member schools have been making millions of dollars off the work of college athletes, and until recently, the amateur economy of campus sports has gone relatively unchallenged. Even now, the NCAA's rules against allowing players to be paid are supported by a majority of Americans, and many justify this clear injustice by arguing that college athletes are already getting the most valuable compensation possible: a "free" education. 10.8 million dollars for a media right deal might seem like a lot of money, but when you look at the amount of sponsors that are willing to put money into these intercollegiate sports tournaments, it might be understandable. Everything about the NCAA March Madness tournaments is branded. Ads from big companies like Coca Cola, AT&T and HP are constantly played during the broadcasts of the games. And it’s not just the NCAA making a lot of money of off the work of these athletes; also the schools are making exorbitant amounts of money. For one of our case studies we looked at some stats from the Northwestern University. The National Labor Relations Board found that Northwestern’s football team $235 million in revenue between 2003 and 2012. (Pepperman & McDonough, 2014) Another interesting statistic...

...Madness Comes Every March 21 October 2012   History of Basketball In order to speak about the impact the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has played in the sports world, one must first understand the origination of the sport itself. The game of basketball has been around since December 21st, 1891 where it was founded by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, MA. Dr. Naismith, originally from Canada, had his roots in ministry before choosing to follow his true passion of physical education and it was through this that he found himself enrolled at the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School. The game originated as a way to handle a group of hostile youth during the physical education hour at the YMCA. Dr. Naismith’s original attempts were to reformat outdoor sports and activities and bring them indoors, but soon realized that these activities were meant to be outdoors for a reason. However, he did not want to falter away from his belief in games as a means of providing physical activity for the youth and decided that a new activity needed to be created. A soccer ball was employed, baskets were built, and soon after – the game of basketball was created. Originally, the game was envisioned by Naismith to be played by any number of players and with that being said, the first game was played by 18 players, nine on each team. The hoops were set at today’s standard of ten feet simply due to the fact that the balconies in which he chose to hang the baskets were...

...Edgar Galvan NCAA as a Monopoly After over a century of existence, the National Collegiate Athletic Association stands today as a multi-million dollar organization, one of the largest and most successful organizations in the nation. The NCAA is in charge of overlooking every college athletic competition in the United States. Every year millions of fans watch NCAA organized games and follow the top prospects of every sport. However, all schools and players involved with the NCAA are obligated to follow a strict set of rules to be eligible to compete at the college level. The NCAA holds college athletes specifically to a very strict set of rules. Under the NCAA all athletes are considered amateurs. The term amateur is used to describe a person or group of people who participate in any form of activity for their own pleasure or entertainment, often distant from those who participate in the same activity for a financial benefit. They NCAA uses the term amateurs to distinguish college athletes from professional athletes. The official NCAA website states that “Maintaining amateurism is crucial to preserving an academic environment in which acquiring a quality education is the first priority”(“Amateurism”). They believe that by labeling them as amateurs they set them apart as student-athletes and everything that the students do for their own respective sport is part of extracurricular activities they are taking a part of. Their website emphasizes this point and declare, “In the collegiate...

Power of Ncaa

...The Power of the NCAA Abstract The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a very powerful entity. The NCAA men’s basketball tournament receives more advertising dollars and has higher ratings then the Super Bowl and the World Series. This paper discusses various other papers all dealing with different aspects of this NCAA entity and the cultural, economic and social impact the NCAA has on the modern education system. These topics include an analysis of NCAA tournament broadcasts and the influence the TV industry has on what people view, the impact of facilities to recruit high quality athletes, as well as a cost-benefit analysis of university’s scholarship system. These issues, among others, affect every college student, not just student-athletes as well as tax-payers, professors and alumni. The Power of the NCAA As a father of a high school student-athlete that is being recruited by Division I universities I felt the need to research the process and the entities involved at a deeper level. The five articles I chose helped me understand the recruitment process and the logic behind it as well as the influence the athletic departments have over every school. Division I athletic departments are either the largest or second largest buildings on each campus as far as operations (Southall et al.). One major concern with the amount of influence the NCAA has in the community is that after their big national tournament in 2006, a representative...

...Ryan Scott Dr. Dunn ENG 100.12 Proposal 11/13/13 Pay for Play? Define Problem: Last year the NCCA signed a 14-year, $10.8 billion dollar contract with CBS and Turner Sports to allow them to broadcast the annual March Madness of college basketball on their channel. The Bowl Championship series of college football also signed a $125 million dollar deal with ESPN (Ford 1). Depending on how deep of a run you make in March Madness or a big win in a highly anticipated BCS bowl game, teams could potentially bring in millions of dollars to their university. But the men and women who are the ones on the field putting their body and wellbeing on the line are the same ones who see absolutely none of that money. How can this even be possible? College athletes, who put in just as much time if not more than an actual job, receive no type of money for the amount of revenue that they bring in. Sure they get an athletic scholarship that pays for most of their schooling but, not for everything outside of that. There is more to college than just books and schoolwork. People still need to buy food, pay bills, gas, and just everyday essentials. When writer William J. Ford asked senior guard Gary Clark from Wake Forest University about the topic he said “At a lot of schools, players come from underprivileged families. I know we are getting a scholarship, but some folks don’t have cash to get something to eat when the school cafeteria is closed, or money to buy a used car,” he continues. “I...

The NCAA should be ashamed. I am writing my congressman. | The NCAA has already attempted to change the standards a year ago, but ultimately the company would be sued by one of our top manufacturers (Easton), which directed the company to limit the performance of all composite bats. Also, the miles per hour from an average hit off of a composite bat are 93.3mph whereas for a wooden bat, the power of the bat generates an average of 86.1mph. Although this statistic was provided by Brown University and was set forth over a decade ago, the standards have been drastically been shaped to allow for much safer composite bats than in previous years. | | What are the results of your research in the area of bat technology?I saw a show on Fox Sports Net in the Spring that made some claims that not only are batted balls faster than ever...

...David Mueller Jim Marchbank Final 16 December 2013 1. Planning, leading, organizing, and controlling are the 4 dimensions that lead to success. Planning involves anything done to prepare fully for success, this could be getting up on time, reading ahead of a meeting to be prepared to participate, or mapping out a strategy to achieve goals. Leading involves anything done to be an example to follow. This could be as easy as doing the right things for others to see or encouraging an employee to do things a different way. Organizing also has to do with being prepared. This doesn’t necessarily mean having a clean desk (although that may help), it has more to do with organizing thoughts for a meeting or organizing personnel in a way that will promote success. Controlling is anything that has to do with making sure things run smoothly. Controlling, in my opinion, encompasses all of the other 3 aspects. As a manager you are responsible for success of your company so you need to be hands on and control your business to success. I need to improve with organizing, many times I know what I want to say or get across to my pitchers but I get lost on my way there. I have good points to make and something comes out wrong because I am not organized. I need to also plan better to help organize my thoughts and actions in a more productive way. 2. ...Dushawn Benjamin Professor Cameron Fundamentals of Speech The NCAA Brothel The NCAA Brothel For many years, the NCAA college athlete organization has been a huge success with fans all over America. Millions of people attend big tournaments and exhibition games on the regular basis. Sports are no longer fun and games; it’s a business. Universities make an ample amount of money due to the praise college sports receive. Yes, some players on the team do go to school with a free scholarship, but is that it? People would be truly grateful to obtain a scholarship for an expensive university, but the situation that college athletes are in has to be examined closely. You can even compare the college athletes to your local prostitute. They are using their bodies for the income growth of huge universities, which will be the pimp. The school receives money from ticket sales, television contracts, sport-related merchandise, and many other sport-related revenue builders. The income that the universities obtain compared to what the athletes earn is nothing, a ratio of 1:0. Student athletes should be paid because they risk their health, it’s not fair financially, and it leads to students doing illegal acts. During the act of playing a competitive and physical sport, there are health risks that each player takes. Basketball players become injured all the time during playing their sport. Whether it’s an ACL tear, meniscus tear, broken ankle, there are all critical...

Illegal Recruiting in Ncaa

...anything and everything to get that player to come to their school and into their program. This even includes violating the NCAA recruiting rules and policies. While it is true that many of these violations go unpunished or even unnoticed by the NCAA, the truth is that recruiting violations are becoming more and more predominant in recent years thanks in part to social networks and other forms of communication. Most violations are on the men’s side of athletics, mainly in basketball and football. This does not mean that there is a lack of violations on the women’s side though. Violations have begun to occur more regularly in women’s athletics in recent years. Due to the recent frequency of recruiting scandals being brought to public attention thanks in part to media, NCAA recruiting violation scandals are the topic of conversation for many households, especially those who have young athletes who are wanting to be recruited by their favorite schools. NCAA Definition of “Recruiting” and Their Position The NCAA defines “recruiting” as “any solicitation of prospective student-athletes or their parents by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing a prospective student-athlete’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program.” ("Ncaa," 2011) This means that any individual, whether it be a coach or regular staff member, like a teacher, that is attempting to...

Pros And Cons Of The NCAA

...When the NCAA was founded by President Roosevelt in 1905, the institution was committed to the idea of not providing a salary to the student-athletes who took part in its organization. But, over a century later, the NCAA has changed to take full advantage of the new kinds of sports fans and especially the new kinds of media. Today, sports and athletics in the NCAA draw in around $11 billion every year for the organization. Its coaches and administrators make large amounts of money. The average salary for a NCAA football coach is 2 million but some coaches are making much more, such as one of the top teams, Alabama, their head football coach is making 7 million a year. ...NCAA Football And The Possible Realignment of The Teams into Super Conferences Mergers and Acquisitions Anthony Pranger October 2011 Introduction: NCAA football is a wonderful and exciting sport, of which I basically know the rules and enjoy watching when I have the time. To be perfectly honest though, this is not a topic that I know much about when it comes to the rankings, divisions and how they determine who will play against who in the upcoming season. Since I lack in knowledge regarding this topic and am not one to back down from a challenge, I have decided to run forward and tackle the topic and research college football, and the inner workings of the sport. This will give me the opportunity to learn more than just accounting and business principles while attaining my master’s degree. First things first, I feel a good description of the sport and its foundation is in order. This will really help put things in perspective, so that I can charge forward and score a touchdown with this paper. NCAA football is also known as College football or pigskin football. Each team is a college (university) and they compete in divisions. The division that has the best teams is called the Division IA and is divided in too many different conferences. The players are amateurs (they do not get paid to play) but they do receive a college scholarship. Each football team can offer a free education to 85 players. College football is all but clear because it does not...
