...The Necklace Summary How It All Goes Down At the beginning of the story, we meet Mathilde Loisel, a middle-class girl who desperately wishes she were wealthy. She's got looks and charm, but had the bad luck to be born into a family of clerks, who marry her to another clerk (M. Loisel) in the Department of Education. Mathilde is so convinced she's meant to be rich that she detests her real life and spends all day dreaming and despairing about the fabulous life she's not having. She envisions footmen, feasts, fancy furniture, and strings of rich young men to seduce. One day M. Loisel comes home with an invitation to a fancy ball thrown by his boss, the Minister of Education. M. Loisel has gone to a lot of trouble to get the invitation, but Mathilde's first reaction is to throw a fit. She doesn't have anything nice to wear, and can't possibly go! How dare her husband be so insensitive? M. Loisel doesn't know what to do, and offers to buy his wife a dress, so long as it's not too expensive. Mathilde asks for 400 francs, and he agrees. It's not too long before Mathilde throws another fit, though, this time because she has no jewels. So M. Loisel suggests she go see her friend Mme. Forestier, a rich woman who can probably lend her something. Mathilde goes to see Mme. Forestier, and she is in luck. Mathilde is able to borrow a gorgeous diamond necklace. With the necklace, she's sure to be a stunner. The night of the ball arrives, and Mathilde has the time of her life. Everyone...

...Images never merely portray an authentic reality but instead they “inevitably betray the values of the culture in which they were created” (Howells, 2003: 70) Fig1.1: Self Portrait with Necklace of Thorns, 1940, Oil on Canvas Fig. 1.2 Henry Ford Hospital (The Flying Bed), 1932, Oil on Metal This paper will begin with a brief introduction of visual studies, painting in particular and go on to establish the fact that visual images not merely imitate reality but also inform the real world. When one views a painting, it is not complete objective view. There is a very thin line between objectivity and mind working under influence of ideologies. Complex interworking of representation of perceived reality by the painter, ideological approach of the viewer is at play, both, striving to figure out the real. The paper will try to analyze Frida Kahlo’s two paintings Self-Portrait With Thorn Necklace and Humming Bird and Henry ford hospital, The Flying Bed under this lens. The term visual might seem to a layman too simplistic to be critically analyzed but the field of visual culture expands the scope of our ways of seeing and the perceptions that govern an individual's spectatorship. It is easy to define visual as "What is visible to eyes" but new vistas are opened when as students of visual studies we set to decipher the fact that our understanding of reality is primarily if not wholly based on our pre-conceived notions, acquired ideas, collective unconsciousness (Jung), ideologies...

...lines, the reader understands that the crafting narrator is moving towards old age. Both young and old are ‘helpless’ in the progression of time. These wider considerations are based on precise, particular memories and observations. The first section vividly describes the physical features of old age, while the second centres around the moment of realisation about ‘My great-aunt Etty’s friend’ and her rolling beads from a broken necklace. Though written in one stanza, consider the effects of Cornford’s use of short lines. The first serves to complete the childish observation before the epiphany in the poem’s second section, while the final short line provides the ambivalent conclusion. Note the way too that the couplets, established in the early part of the poem, break up in the last four lines. ...Jersey Shore Critical Analysis I chose to do Jersey Shore for my Critical Analysis, not because it is my favourite show, but there is a lot of stereotype, and scripted events that relate to the younger viewers. This includes the commercials, and some of the things these characters are involved in. This Critical Analysis will break down this Television series, and will discuss what the characters do to create the image they are trying to achieve when airing this show. Will also discuss the ethical implications this series can have on the public, and how we behave because of this. In terms of gender, this show makes a clear difference in the actions between the men and the women. The men are often in the gym, or getting their haircut together, whereas the women go to the salon together, go to the beach, and there is a clear difference between what they do together. There are now a lot of relationships in the house, and this makes the way each gender acts extremely different. The male is often more dominant in the relationship, and the women seem to be more fragile. This was shown when Jenni was mad at her boyfriend Roger for ignoring her calls, but as soon as she confronted him, he took control of the conversation and immediately put his dominance across. There are many times in the show where they show that the women do have some sort of control or equality in the house, when they often show Mike doing the cooking, and the men cleaning. This could be to show that the women do...

The three films that would help me conduct this research and meet my aims are Candyman, Friday the 13th and a nightmare on Elm Street. By looking at these films, I would be able to see whether all the elements that come under genre is applied e.g. iconography, setting etc. The creation of horror films was done to make people scared and frightened but also tap into our hidden fears. This could be done by looking at the most common thing that scare people. For example, The fly, David...

...In today’s business environment, a firm’s survival is dependent on how it responds to its stakeholders; CSR is a way that response is communicated. This paper explores whether CSR is necessary for the survival of Banyan Tree in today’s environment. We will evaluate the possible ways that CSR benefits the company and show that CSR is not necessary for Banyan Tree’s survival but it does play a strategic role in building brand equity along with a sustainable business. Introduction Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) There are multiple interpretations of what CSR means, and while there is no set principle, we have defined CSR as the duty of a corporation to create wealth in ways that avoid harm to, protect, or enhance societal assets for the purposes of discussion. Prevailing approaches to CSR were disconnected from strategy such that it obscured many opportunities for companies to benefit society . The outlook of CSR has changed since and modern business organizations have started to incorporate CSR, both internally and externally into their operations, aiming to achieve sustainable business development. This evolution arose due to increasing governmental regulations and societal expectations regarding the operation of companies, thus creating a divergence in business performance and expectations. CSR facilitates businesses in narrowing their performance-expectation gap . In the modern business environment, companies do not only compete on price and quality of...

...reality of such entities as the mental disorders they fear they may be suffering from, or the inner sexual needs they believe they have to release. Foucault has examined various kinds of systems of thought through which people have come to identify themselves as subjects.”(Rajchman) And then another good quote about Michel Foucault is “For more than a decade, his elegant shaved skull had been an emblem of political courage-a cynosure of resistance to institutions that would smother the free spirit and stifle the right to be different.” (Miller 13) I will be exploring how the present days views are reinforced; the dominant message of how a wedding should be and then how in some movies, the post-feminism is displayed which slightly alters this dominant image. I will be also exploring the mix of cultural traditions within the wedding to see how the structure is similar or drastically different. I will discuss Marx’s Materialism ideology aspect of the domination of the ruling class and explore the aspect of the base and superstructure with the mode of production/the system of economic relations within the institutions surrounding wedding ideology. Through close textual analysis, I will show the dominant ideology of the wedding industry as illustrated through media and the attitudes of various woman; comparing views of two extremes to the leading up to that of the dominant American wedding ideology of the industry and secondly, I will then contrast this structuralism to that of...

...Engl 503 S.M. Rabillard Term Paper Dec 6 2001 Exchanging the Currency of Authenticity: Live Performance and Mediatization in Hiphop Culture Baba Brinkman 0135748 Welcome to the wonderful World of entertainment Where art imitates life And people get famous Welcome to the world Of show-biz arrangements Where "lights, camera, action" Is the language. -Jurrasic 5 Performance studies in the last few years has begun to reject essentialist notions of live performance as ontologically distinct from the influence of recorded media, or mediatization. Philip Auslander deconstructs the traditional binary of live versus mediatized forms in his recent study, Liveness: Live Performance in a Mediatized Culture. Since hiphop culture and rap music originated in a post-industrial urban setting, they have always been inherently mediatized to some degree. However, if there is no unmediatized performance in hiphop culture, a huge premium is still placed on immediacy. Since the appearance of rap records in the late seventies and MTV rap music videos in the mid-eighties it has become increasingly easier for rap artists to achieve success without having to first build a local following. In response to this phenomenon, music critic Nelson George has made a political analogy: recorded media "has made rap more democratic--but is democracy good for art? Hiphop was, at one point, a true meritocracy"(George 113).i Hiphop culture struggles between its status as meritocracy ...

...[pic] JPPSS ELA COURSE GUIDE 2011-2012 ENGLISH I The JPPSS Instructional Sequence Guides are aligned with the LA Comprehensive Curriculum. JPPSS Implementation of Activities in the Classroom Incorporation of activities into lesson plans is critical to the successful implementation of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. The Comprehensive Curriculum indicates one way to align instruction with Louisiana standards, benchmarks, and grade-level expectations. The curriculum is aligned with state content standards, as defined by grade-level expectations (GLEs), and organized into coherent, time-bound units with sample activities and classroom assessments to guide teaching and learning. The units in the curriculum have been arranged so that the content to be assessed will be taught before the state testing dates. While teachers may substitute equivalent activities and assessments based on the instructional needs, learning styles, and interests of their students, the Comprehensive Curriculum should be a primary resource when planning instruction. Grade level expectations—not the textbook—should determine the content to be taught. Textbooks and other instructional materials should be used as resource in teaching the grade level expectations...
