In the book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, by Michelle Alexander—a Ohio State University professor, director of Racial Justice Project at ACLU of Northern California, and director of the Civil Rights Clinics at Stanford Law School—was the uncovering research about the system of mass incarceration, which are rules, policies, and laws that helped control the amount of criminals entering and leaving prisons. The author begins with slavery and continues to explain the Jim Crow segregation, which both represent mass incarcerations. Mass incarceration prevents discrimination towards groups of people. For example, the author states, “After the death of slavery, the idea of race lives on.” (26) This specific example …show more content…
Although, she does admit that it has improved a little. For example, she states, “The superlative nature of individual black achievement today in formally white domains is a good indicator that the old Jim Crow is dead, but does not necessarily mean the end of racial caste.” (21) In this specific example, the author does believe that racial caste still exists and that colored people are still being mistreated; Although, the Old Jim Crow has died. She believes that the Old Jim Crow strategy has died because Barack Obama was a colored president and that is the highest someone could be in an office, meaning it represented a black achievement. She implicates that the world has been blindsided by these racial injustice and discrimination, especially towards the people of color. She believes that the only way to solve the racial justice in America is to concentrate improving the criminal justice system and mass incarceration. For example, the author states, “incarceration is not a response to crime.” (8) Although there are civil rights and prison reforms, it is simply not enough to solve this ongoing problem that is occurring the United States, especially it is not the solution to incarceration. She wants to educate others, so that they could educate others and the cycle about the racial justice could occur. Without education, everyone is clueless about the things that are happening in the United States. The author even reveals an untold secret that “the Supreme Court has actually granted the police license to discriminate.” (128) Alexander revealed this secret because she wanted to let her readers know how unequally treated the federal system was. She also claims how it victims cannot sue if discriminated, but the federal system can. Therefore, the author is letting everyone know about the unequal treatment the federal system provides, so that change could happen.
