...Whatever Happened to the 100-Year Event? They're big, we know them when we see them, and we remember them. By STEVEN SULLIVAN B y September 16, 2013, more than 4,500 square miles of Colorado were under water. That’s an area roughly the size of Delaware by some estimates; others compared it to Connecticut. The territory on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains had already been subjected to six straight days and 17 inches of rain, more than five inches above the annual average for the area. More than 1,200 people were missing, 19,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, 12,000 people evacuated. Fatalities were still unknown, but expected to be numerous. Television images showed raging torrents in streams and creeks that rivaled the last few hundred yards of the Niagara River before the Falls. Colorado was experiencing not just a 100-year event; this was a 1,000-year event, a flood that even the National Weather Service characterized as not only historic, but biblical. That turns out to be a pretty good characterization of a 100-year event. They’re big, we know them when we see them, and we remember them: Hurricane Katrina in 2005; Super Storm Sandy in 2012; the tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma in 2013; the entire wildfire summer of 2012. And if one of them takes your loved ones, your home, or your possessions, it doesn’t really matter if it makes the record books. 26 ACTUARIAL REVIEW NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 • WWW.CASACT.ORG Misleading...

...Executive Summary of Accreditation Audit June 2012 I prepared and reviewed an accreditation audit for Nightingale Community Hospital to organize and ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards for our hospital. We are preparing for a site visit that should occur within the next 13 months. I have reviewed the current compliance status of our hospital and will explain our corrective action plan that will ensure compliance with the Joint Commission standards for the focus area of communication. An accreditation audit was performed by Carl Anderson, Director of Quality. We were only in 100% compliance in December throughout the year in one of the priority focus areas of the Joint Commission standard: Communication; Standard: UP.01.03.01; A time out is performed before the procedure. See chart below: This is the universal protocol for preventing wrong site, wrong procedure, and wrong Patient Surgeries. In evaluating this, I must review all standards that go hand in hand with the time-out standard; per Nightingale Community Hospital policy, Site Identification and Verification (Universal Protocol). I will address the elements of performance for all three: UP.01.01.01; Conduct a preprocedure verification process. UP.01.02.01; Mark the procedure site, and UP.01.03.01; A time-out is performed before the procedure. I will then address the items that are not addressed in Nightingale's policy in my corrective action plan and add any updates. (Commission, 2012) Standard...

...journal article review You may be asked to write a journal article review. Although this may be an unfamiliar exercise, it is not as complex a task as writing an essay requiring a lot of library research, and not the same as a review in The Canberra Times which is written for the general reader. Your journal article review is written for a reader (eg, your supervisor, lecturer or tutor) who is knowledgeable in the discipline and is interested not just in the coverage and content of the article being reviewed, but also in your critical assessment of the ideas and argument that are being presented by the author. Your review might therefore be guided by the following questions: Objectives | What does the article set out to do? | Theory | Is there an explicit theoretical framework? If not, are there important theoretical assumptions? | Concepts | What are the central concepts? Are they clearly defined? | Argument | What is the central argument? Are there specific hypotheses? | Method | What methods are employed to test these? | Evidence | Is evidence provided? How adequate is it? | Values | Are value positions clear or are they implicit? | Literature | How does the work fit into the wider literature? | Contribution | How well does the work advance our knowledge of the subject? | Style | How clear is the author's language/style/expression? | Conclusion | A brief overall assessment. | | | | | This image shows a close-up view of the next-generation microshutter...
