1. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was devised by Thomas Jefferson to organize the unruly American West. The Ohio River became a border between slave and non slave states. This put it in the minds of northerners that slavery was slowly coming to an end, but to some southerners The Northwest Ordinance protected them against western competition. Slave owners with the intention of expanding west were naturally upset. In short the Northwest Ordinance only helped drive the wedge between the North and South even further.

he United States is plagued by one question, from the country's inception until 1865. That question is "Slave or Non-Slave?". For over a hudred years people constantly argued about whether or not the whole of the country should accept slavery or not. Since it was such a major issue of such a divisive nature in America, polititians would often not address slavery at all. When America begins to expand, people become afraid that if a new state is brought in that state will throw off the balance in the federal government. Southern slave owners believe their interests won't be represented at the Federal level, if non-slave states are over represented. The North believes that slavery won't go away unless they start to lessen or stop the slave states from joining the union. To attempt to please both sides, the Missouri Compromise was perposed. Certain states would be able to vote whether or not they wanted slavery, and others above the 30 60 line would be non-slave. I see this as a last effort by the union to keep a torn nation
