In the novel The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, Ruby Pier, the amusement park, has an enormous impact on the old maintenance worker, Eddie. Him working there has also affected the lives of the people whom he meets once he dies. Eddie worked at Ruby Pier Amusement Park for his entire life, just as his father had before him. After the war with a bad leg, he is left be be a mechanic for the rest of his days. Although he wished to get a degree in engineering, he never left the park because of his father’s bitterness towards Eddie doing so. One would think that once Eddie’s father died, he would leave to pursue the better job he wanted, but the war stopped him from moving around too much and he was getting older and settling down.
