The Oregon Standoff

The oregon standoff is a battle between the federal government and American militias. The American militia is lead by Ammon Bundy. The county of Harney is where the whole incident is taking place. At once a peaceful protest in the county of Harney, turned into an armed occupation. Their goal of the protest was to free ranchers Dwight and Steve Hammond, who were both found guilty of committing arson due to setting a fire on federal land. In the act of what was a peaceful protest, the militia has taken control over Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to send the government a bigger message. No one was hurt from them taking over the refuge and they aren’t destroying property. County sheriff David M. Ward has offered treaties and has done his best …show more content…
They feel that they can not trust the government. The biggest reasons they are losing trust in the government is that they see changes they do not agree with. The two biggest being gun control and border patrol. Many patriot groups have set up their own border patrol because they feel Obama is too lenient with the illegal immigrants. These groups have grown big and can have 24 hour surveillance at points on the border and have many teams out at the same time. They feel that they are taking the role of what the government should be doing. They feel that they are protecting the country against terrorist which is a huge issue today. Along with protecting America from terrorist they also believe that they are helping the people by keeping out immigrants. They believe by doing so they can keep Americans employed. Many of the militiamen use AR-15’s for weapon of choice for daily use or on these routine missions. The gun itself is a common rifle because it is light and getting parts to build it are fairly easy. In the past Obama and his cabinet have tried to put restrictions on the gun by making it illegal to buy ammo for it. This made many people mad not only from the militiamen but across the all America. After an outcry they stopped the from processing the law. Many people feel like the ammo law and many other actions restricting gun purchasing and usage is an attack on their second amendment. On the contrary the belief is to make guns harder to buy or by getting rid of them that’ll make the people safe. Obama and his cabinet are pushing to try to solve gun violence in America, their answer is to get guns out of hands of bad people by making it harder for people to obtain guns. This solution they have come up with offends people with guns and makes them worried that guns will

Civil Disobedience To Protest Unjust Laws

...Refuge, which occurred on January 2, 2016. During this incident, which lasted for 40 days, Ammon Bundy led armed militants to seize the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, in which they protested how the federal government could own and manage public land inside of the United States. During this incident, an armed standoff occurred between these 40 men along with the FBI and the Oregon State Police, where one of Bundy’s militants was killed. This incident demonstrates how civil disobedience can sometimes be impractical and ineffective, since this act of civil disobedience didn’t result in any social changes. These men, who protested against a law which they saw as unfair, should have tried using other methods to protest what they saw as unfair before going on a full armed standoff. Instead of inspiring any social changes, this incident only led to the indictment of 26 militants for federal felony conspiracy offenses, where nobody was inspired to change any laws. In this example, using the court system to protest against the Bureau of Land Management would have been more practical and effective, since there wouldn’t have been any loss of life or wasted time from the standoff. However, by resorting to civil disobedience, Bundy and his men lost all public support for their cause by threatening police officers and FBI agents. This incident shows how despite the fact that civil disobedience can cause social progress, it can sometimes be impractical and inappropriate, where other efforts...

Indians

... Throughout history, the Sioux Indians, had to fight physical and emotional battles, in trying to retain their land and dignity. Following a time line, the American Indians were treated unjustly, as I will show starting with the Bozeman Trail and continuing on with The Great Sioux Reservation, Custer’s expedition, Battle of the Little Big Horn, Ghost Dancers, Wounded Knee, Citizenship Act of 1924, The Indian Reorganization Act, and The American Movement(AIM). The terrains were rough, being brutal and forcibly tough, especially for the new settlers who came west, when there was talk of gold. John Jacobs and his partner John M. Bozeman established in 1863 a trail that went through Wyoming and Montana that connected the Oregon Trail. The Bozeman trail was much shorter and more direct, even though, it was a much better wagon road, however it had its flaws. It just happened to pass through the Lakota and Cheyenne’s hunting grounds. The Indians had warned the first wagon train against crossing. While some did...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...

The World in 2008

...EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION Two big events will frame the year ahead: America’s presidential election and the summer Olympic games in Beijing. The race for the White House will be a marathon, from the front-loaded primary season in January and February to the general election in November. The betting is that the winner will be a Democrat—with a strong chance that a Clinton will again be set to succeed a Bush as leader of the free world. China, meanwhile, will hope to use the Olympics to show the world what a splendid giant it has become. It will win the most gold medals, and bask in national pride and the global limelight. But it will also face awkward questions on its repressive politics. America and China will be prime players in the matters that will concentrate minds around the world in 2008. One of these is the world economy, which can no longer depend on America, with its housing and credit woes, to drive growth. America should—just—avoid recession, but it will be China (for the first time the biggest contributor to global growth) along with India and other emerging markets that will shine. Another focus of attention will be climate change. As China replaces America as the world’s biggest producer of greenhouse gases, serious efforts on global warming depend on the serious involvement of those two countries. If 2007 was the year when this rose to the top of the global agenda, in 2008 people will expect action. It is striking that green is a theme that links all the contributions...

Title

...At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary. He was curled into a seat between two helicopter crew chiefs, the knees of his long legs up to his shoulders. Before him, jammed on both sides of the Black Hawk helicopter, was his "chalk," twelve young men in flak vests over tan desert camouflage fatigues. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. Some had come up together through basic training, jump school, and Ranger school. They had traveled the world, to Korea, Thailand, Central America... they knew each other better than most brothers did. They'd been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep. Through all those things, they had been training for a moment like this. It was the first time the lanky sergeant had been put in charge, and he was nervous about it. Pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death, Amen. It was midafternoon, October 3, 1993. Eversmann's Chalk Four...
