The more modernistic novel, The Last Song, displays a different outlook, compared to the severity of The Outsiders. There are several reasons behind these teens rebellious outburst, such as abandonment, environment, and revenge. Also, the punishments these teenagers must face are more severe in the more classical novel compared to the more current novel. The rebellious actions shown throughout both novels are quite similar, while displaying the same actions with a modern twist. Overall, today's teens display less severity, compared to the volatile actions of the teenagers in The Outsiders. The severity of the rebellious actions varies between a more modernistic outlook, compared to a classical approach. Ronnie, the main character of The Last Song, rebels against her father by refusing to play the piano. She refuses to use her incredible piano playing skills purposely to hurt her father's feelings. I have chosen four works that illustrate the phenomenon: Freedom Writers - a movie directed by Richard LaGravenese based on teacher Erin Gruwell’s book The Freedom Writer’s Diary; The Sneetches - a classic children’s book by Dr Seuss; The Power of One - a movie directed by John Avildsen based on Bryce Courtenay’s popular novel of the same name; and The Wave - a young adult novel written by Todd Strasser who is also known by his pen name - Morton Rhue. In the movie, humanity is portrayed as having destroyed the earth's ecosystem by the 23rd century, through war, overpopulation and pollution, and retreated into a high-tech city enclosed in domes, full of futuristic buildings and public spaces that look like something out of a contemporary shopping mall. Inside, the inhabitants devote themselves to a life of indulgence while a computer with a vaguely seductive female voice controls the city and produces everything they need to live. They know nothing of the outside world, nor do they have any idea how to operate the machines that serve them. As in many similar works, the characters are portrayed as being much like children, dependent on the central computer to shelter them in their gilded cage. But the characters aren't only separated from the nature outside the city. They are also separated from the natural processes of life. They are incubated in nurseries, rather than being born, and they neither marry nor know their children. ...In examining Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” alongside Tim Burton’s filmic adaption of the story, titled “Sleepy Hollow,” a number of fascinating similarities and differences emerge. Though elements of the characters and settings of Burton’s film borrow heavily from Irving’s text, the overall structuring of the film is significantly different, and representations of various elements are crucially re-imagined. Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow” was released on November 19, 1999, a few months before the new millennium. Set in 1799, Burton’s film modifies the 1790 date that Irving’s text is set in, showing an acute concern with living out anxieties surrounding millennial change in the ‘safe’ formats of film and of established folk legend. Irving’s tale, written in 1820, also works with antiquity, but in a different manner: it lives out colonial cultural anxieties of Irving’s present, as he seems to be concerned with constructing archetypes of folk and with placing folk culture in the new American literary landscape. Examining the two versions of the tale, then, provides a fascinating peek into the transformation of concerns and values in America from Irving’s nineteenth century landscape to Burton’s twentieth (on the verge of twenty-first) century.
