Throughout the book “The Overachievers; The Secret Lives of Driven Kids”, by Alexandra Robbins, there is a character in particular that has impacted the story greatly. His name is AP Frank, known as the workhorse, because he was always taking the most rigorous courses in high school, since his mother obligated him to do so. He never went out to have a good time with his friends during high school but rather stayed home, over studying for his exams or doing extra work his mother would give him and his brother. Now during the second half of the book, AP Frank made a drastic turn when he began to make his own decisions and listen to his mother less. In the second half, it isn’t the exception either, although in college, he was away from home and his mother which gave him a lot more leniency for him to do what he wanted to do. His mother did call him to yell at him whenever he was not doing great academically. This saddened Frank because it can be inferred that he wanted his mother to call him to ask him about his day and college experience rather than yelling at him. This is seen on page 269 where he is talking to his father telling him that he wishes she wouldn’t call just to yell at him. Throughout high school, his mother impeded him from hanging out with his friends or even watching movies and television shows. Instead, she had him studying or watching educational shows such as discovery channel. This affected him when he went to college because the friends he made would go out to parties and had dates while Frank since he was never allowed to go anywhere or even take girls out, was inexperienced. This is seen on page 279 where the author states “AP Frank thoroughly enjoyed the freshman formal. He later posted on the blog for his Whitman friends that the night ‘easily the most fun night I’ve had at college, possibly ever--and without alcohol. The wonders hat dancing with a girl you’re crazy about can do for you...unbelievable.’” This describes the scene where AP Frank went to the formal and since he had not gone out to a formal like this one before,
