“The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury is based around a man named Leonard Mead, who views the world differently than the rest of his community. Bradbury expresses Leonard's non-conformity by providing a juxtaposition between Leonard and the rest of his community. Leonard’s community is composed of monotonous individuals who dwell in dimly lit houses with viewing screens which they are always watching during night hours while Leonard has a bright lively house which represents his bright and creative mind. Today, dogs with two contrasting eye colors and albino hamsters are the pets last sold and are often stared upon and scrutinized for being disparate. This is the way society looks upon Leonard, and as a result, he catches the attention of the police in a negative way. Regardless of how he is looked at, Leonard’s method of living is superior to his neighbors because the rest of his community is banal and has complacent personalities. Leonard looks at life as if every day is important while the rest of society views their lives as only being necessary for constant repetitive activities such as watching TV and eating meals. It is important to view every day as significant because it can help people strive to reach new goals which will lead to conscientious behavior, prosperity and a richness of life. The people of his community are like clay, who are being molded to act the way the government wants; they are shaped to fit a mold while Leonard has been shaped by hand, expanding the variety of shapes he could be molded into.
