The Penis by Hanif Kureishi

Alfie was having breakfast with his wife at the kitchen table.
He couldn't have slept for more than three hours, having been out the previous night. He was a cutter - a hairdresser - and had to get to work. Once there, as well as having to endure the noise and queues of customers, he had to make conversation all day.
`Did you have a good time last night?' his wife asked.
They had got married a year ago in Las Vegas.
`I think so,' he said.
`Where did you go?' She was looking at him. `Don't you know?’
'I can't remember the early part of the evening. We all met in the pub. Then there was a club and a lot of people. Later there was a porn film.'
`Was it good?'
`It wasn't human. It was like a butcher's shop. After that ... it gets a little vague.'
His wife looked at him in surprise.
`That's never happened before. You always like to tell me what you've been doing. I hope it's not the start of something.'
`It's not,' said Alfie. `Wait a minute. I'll tell you what I did.'
He pulled his jacket from where he had left it, over the back of a chair.
He would examine his wallet and see how much money he had spent, whether he had any cocaine left, or if he had collected phone numbers, business cards or taxi receipts that might jog his memory. He was fumbling in his inside pocket when he found something strange.
He pulled it out.
`What's that?' his wife said. She came closer. `It's a penis,' she said. `You've come home with a man's penis - complete with balls and pubic hair - in your pocket. Where did you get it?'
`I don't know,' he said.
`You better tell me,' she said.
He put it down on the table.
`I don't make a habit of picking up stray penises.' He added, `It's not erect.'
`Suppose it does start to get hard? It's big enough as it is.'
She looked more closely. `Bigger than yours. Bigger than most I've seen.

...The human penis is an external male intromittent organ that additionally serves as the urinal duct. The main parts are the root (radix); the body (corpus); and the epithelium of the penis including the shaft skin and the foreskin covering the glans penis. The body of the penis is made up of three columns of tissue: two corpora cavernosa on the dorsal side and corpus spongiosum between them on the ventral side. The human male urethra passes through the prostate gland, where it is joined by the ejaculatory duct, and then through the penis. The urethra traverses the corpus spongiosum, and its opening, the meatus (/miːˈeɪtəs/), lies on the tip of the glans penis. It is a passage both for urination and ejaculation of semen. The penis and many of its associated structures are homologous to the vagina and its associated structures. For example, the glans penis (the head of the penis) is homologous to the clitoris. An erection is the stiffening and rising of the penis, which occurs during sexual arousal, though it can also happen in non-sexual situations. The most common form of genital alteration is circumcision, removal of part or all of the foreskin for various cultural, religious and, more rarely, medical reasons. There is controversy surrounding circumcision. While results vary across studies, the consensus is that the average erect human penis is approximately 12.9–15 cm (5.1–5.9 in) in length with 95% of adult males falling within the interval 10.7–19.1 cm (4.2–7.5 in). ...The short story ”The Penis” is written by Hanif Kureishi. The short story is about a penis, which has been separated from its owner Doug, who we hear from later on. At first though we hear about a guy called Alfie who was “a cutter – a hairdresser – and had to get to work”. He is having breakfast with his wife, when she asks him what he did last night, and if he had a good time last night? Alfie can not remember what he did last night, he then looks in his wallet to examine how much money he had spent or if he has any cocaine left or anything else, which could give him a clue of what he has been doing. He finds something strange inside his pocket. In his pocket he finds a penis, with balls, and pubic hair. This appears very incongruous to me, because I had not expected that he would find a penis in his pocket, maybe cocaine, which Hanif Kureishi had prepared the ground to. Alfie considered how he should get rid of the penis. His instinct is to drop it in a litterbin, but then he remembers how his wife wants him to be more “business minded”, and more than anything wanted him to appear on television. After this little thought he then considers selling the penis to an art dealer, but he ends up throwing the penis over the side of a bridge. Alfies story is told by a limited omniscient point of view, and when we hear about Doug, which I will tell a bit about next, Hanif Kureishi turns the point of view and tells the rest of the story in an omniscient third-person narrators...

...The penis By Hanif Kureishi This essay will focus on how Hanif Kureishi uses humor and different points of view to portray his image of the human relationship to and appreciation of objects and likewise. Hanif Kureishi makes use of two of the three theories that has been set around humor. Hanif Kureishi uses ‘the relief theory’ and ‘the incongruity theory’. The relief theory is based around the fact that the reader is going to have a set of taboos or subjects that they do not like to talk about or discuss. Some of these taboos are often things as pornography, genitalia and sex in general, all of which we see in the story. Talking about or being confronted with these taboos will often cause an individual to feel ashamed or nervous. So by confronting the reader with his or her taboos Hanif Kureishi is forcing the reader to deal with his or her shame and/or nervousness and the most common way of doing so is by laughing. Hanif Kureishi implements this in the text by creating a main character, in this case Doug, whom is an “actor” in the industry of pornography, and by writing very obviously about Doug’s work experiences, doings and deeds. And of course there is the huge walking and talking penis… Should it be the case that pornography, genitalia nor sex is not included in the readers list of taboos Hanif Kureishi also makes use of the incongruity theory. The incongruity theory is base aroung the fact that the reader has an assumption about how the world is and works, about...

...“No man can write who is not first a humanitarian.” Born on the 7th of February 1812, he created some of the world’s most memorable fictional characters and was regarded as one of the best writers of the Victorian Era. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular. But the debate still continues. Was this man just an English storyteller or a campaigner for social justice? I believe Charles John Huffam Dickens was one of the greatest social critics the world has ever seen for his commentary on the English social structure. But why did Dickens commentate on social injustice? Was he ever affected? Dickens’s deep social commitment and awareness of social ills are derived from his traumatic childhood experiences when his father was imprisoned and he at the age of twelve worked in a shoe-blacking factory. Imagine that, working at the age of 12 in a factory with no guidance from a mother or father? As a result, Dickens developed a strong social conscious which put into his two most recognisable novels, A Tale of Two Cities which continues to be the best seller of all time with over 200 million copies and Oliver Twist. Dickens succeeded in making the Victorian public aware of the conditions of the poor through his book Oliver Twist and through the characterisation of his titular character, Oliver Twist. In Oliver Twist...

...Running Head: Back to Work Back To Work Marriage and Family Married couples get together when they are in love. One thing that every married couple plans on having, is children. Children are a joy, and should be the reason why couples stay together. But what first time parents often think about, are situations involving money, and work. There are many questions that could come up. Who is going to work? Is one income enough? How will we make it through? Who will take care of the child if we both work? These are some problems that Joshua and Leonora are experiencing. But if they just sit down, they can discuss the problems and come up with a solution. This is a pretty common situation that I have seen myself, in both my parents and my aunts and uncles. Joshua and Leonora just had a child, Christa. Joshua wants Leonora to stay home and watch their child, while he works and brings home money. He wants Leonora to go back to work when Christa is old enough to be in Kindergarten. He doesn’t want to pay for babysitters, because it will be a financial burden on both of them. Leonora on the other hand, wants to work, because she feels if she doesn’t go back to her job now, she may never get the high-paying position she has now back. And if she waits until Christa is in Kindergarten, which will be in 5 years. During this argument, Joshua is explaining calmly that he should be working, but Leonora is expressing anger towards this situation. The first way to resolve...

...Ben Briggance In Martin Espadas poem “Four Sandwiches” JC is a very intersting and important charictor. There seems to be a lot to JC, a lot covered up. Espada gives hints about who JC is for instance, “JC sings his work farm songs on the street” and “JC was called the rack/ at the work farm.”. Espada writes his poetry in such a way that makes you want to know more about the charictor. “ Once a sudden fist crushed the cartilage of his nose across his face but JC only grinned”. This shows JC dose not feel pain, or at least dose not care. Something has gotton him to the point where violence dose not harm him. He seems to be almost broken in a way. I find the way Martin Espada writes about Jc to be very interesting. Luci Tapahonso had a different way of talking about her charictors. In “All I Want”, the old lady has a very simplistic way of going about things. When Luci Tapahonso asks the lady how many cups in the recipe, she replies with “ ah yaa ah” “I don’t Measure with cups./ I know by my hands,/ Just a little like this see?’ I really enjoy that quote. It shows how sometimes we can take for granted the simple things. It shows how we follow our lives step by step when you don’t have to. I really like how Luci Tapahonso used dialogue to tell me what the old lady said then explaing it. If she had said, “the old lady says she dosnt use measureing cups” it would not turn out as well. Although the old lady is not of huge importance to the poem, her way of doing...

...The traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine are both of significance in the field of medicine, and we cannot simply say which is better. But they have many differences in the origin, the methods to diagnose and the therapeutic effects. Firstly, everything must have a beginning, so do traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. The traditional Chinese medicine refers to a broad range of medicine practices sharing the theoretical concepts which are based on a tradition of more than 2000 year in China, including various forms of herbal medicine、acupuncture and dietary therapy. While western medicine based on the pathology, physiology and microbiology for a microscopic investigation including several types of pill injection, surgery and surgical operation vaccination. As we know, one's character determines one's destiny. And the different origins result in people's total different attitude toward the two branches of medicine. More and more people pay more attention to the western medicine instead of traditional Chinese medicine because of the powerful and convincing medical experiments. Secondly, they use different methods to diagnose the disease.A Chinese doctor examines his patient by using method like observing, smelling, asking and feeling. So the Chinese doctor determines the problems of the patients' internal organs by inference through observing various exterior signs, such as the complexion or the tongue. Essay: "The Penis"

...The Penis In today’s society we all are all the slave of the good behavior. We all dress alike, we talk alike, we eat alike and our routines are very much alike each other. Therefore we need the humor to break the daily life. “The Penis” is a very good example for breaking up with taboos that live in today’s society. Here we see something that is so absurd, so the only way to react is to smile. It is so far away from our daily life, as a modern human being, in a modern society. “The Penis” is about a guy who gets hammered in the city, and the next day he finds a penis in his pocket. At the same time a famous porn star wakes up, also after a heavy night a drinking, realizing that his penis is missing. We later find out that the penis wasn’t happy with the porn star and decided to get its own life, which is very absurd because in reality a penis can’t “jump” off the body and get its own life. The porn star realizes that he is nothing without his penis, and the adventure of finding the penis and getting it operated back on the body is clearly described in “The Penis”. The taboos Taboos are often used in comedy. Mainly because it is breaking some personal lines for the reader/participant, and many people reacts on taboos with laughter or smiling. In today’s society there are a lot of taboos. Many of them are based on sex. We don’t talk about sex, we don’t see sex in the street picture, we don’t hear about sex etc. The title alone in “The Penis” is breaking a taboo. Because of...
