...As the owner of of Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling has had allegations of racism from the past and at this percent time. Recently, the media had audio of Sterling expressing terrible things about black people. However, at this point it was brought to the media attention that Donald Sterling has a history of being disrespectful to African Americans. “A top team executive accused Sterling of running the Clippers the Clippers with a “plantation” mentality.” (Shoichet) In 2009, Sterling was accused of wrongful termination by Elgin Baylor. The lawsuit also accused Sterling of “ageism in which he harassed him by making demeaning comments about his age.” (Shoichet) Eventually, in 2011 the racial discrimination claim was dropped and as far as the ageism claim the jury sided with Sterling. In 2006, the Department of Justice brought housing discrimination charges against Sterling’s rental company in Los Angeles alleging that refused to lease to African Americans, Latinos, non-koreans in the Koreatown section in Los Angeles, and families with children. The case was eventually settled in 2009 for $2.725 million because the cost of litigation started exceeding the cost of the settlement. I believe the worst claim of them all was in 2004, when he denied surgery for the assistant coach Kim Hughes. Hughes had found out he was diagnosed with “prostate cancer on the eve of training camp”(Witz) and the surgery wasn’t covered under his health insurance and would cost $70,000. Fortunately...

...Donald Sterling’s fall from the NBA Controversy has surrounded Donald Sterling for much of 2014. Donald was the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers for thirty three seasons until April 2014. He was banned for life after a recording of a conversation between himself and a female friend was released to the public. In the recording Sterling was irritated over a photo his female friend posted on Instagram, where she was with Basketball Hall of Fame player Magic Johnson. Sterling said to her: "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people, and you can sleep with black people. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. But the little I ask you is not to bring them to my games.” Donald Sterling’s comments impacted the National Basketball Association greatly. The comments caused an uproar in players across the league, upset affiliates of the Clippers and himself, and caused the commissioner to get involved. One of the first effects of Sterling's racial remarks was that players in the NBA were extremely upset by the comments made. These comments at the very least were inappropriate, especially in a league where 75% of the athletes are African American (Matthew Continetti, Polishing the silver, tarnishing the Sterling). On April 26, the day after his comments were released, the L.A. Clippers held a team meeting to discuss the incident. Both coaches and players were angered by the comments. They considered boycotting game four of their...

...Businesses in Canada should not be able to sue for defamation because a corporation is not a person. Defamation is easy to allege but hard to defend, and there are effective alternatives to respond to it. Corporations may be designed and operated by people, but corporations are not human beings. John Paul Stevens, a retired associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States can provide support stating: Corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. Corporations help structure and facilitate the activities of human beings, to be sure, and their 'personhood' often serves as a useful legal fiction. But they are not themselves members of “We the People” by whom and for whom our Constitution was established. {insert refernce} With the belief that a corporation is not a person, the definition of defamation suggests corporations should not be able to sue for defamation. According to the Canadian Bar Association “Defamation is communication about a person that tends to hurt the person's reputation. It causes the reader or listener to think less of the person. The communication must be made to other people, not just to the person it's about.” The fact that Corporations are not human entities is not the only reason businesses in Canada should not be allowed to sue for defamation. Defamation is also easy to allege but hard to defend. Since Corporations have substantial financial and legal resources, including teams of corporate lawyers...

...each other, and after watching your documentary “Not Just a Game,” I can see why. Not a lot of people like politics in sports, but what many don’t realize is that politics actually helps sports bring some very controversial subjects to the frontline. The entire Los Angeles Clippers basketball team protesting their racist owner, women being in the main event of an MMA event, and Michael Sam being the first openly gay player to be drafted by the NFL are great examples. Racism is a topic that has plagued sports for a long time whether people want to admit it or not....

...Over the past decade we have observed the growth and development of American professional sports leagues, both on the national scale and globally. The National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Football League (NFL) have both cleaned up their image through their participation in various environmental and community programs such as NBA Cares, NFL PLAY 60, NFL Green Team, and A Crucial Catch. Unfortunately, major legal and ethical situations have arisen which adversely affect each league in different ways. This paper details such social responsibility efforts mentioned above, as well as others, and aims to present the ethical and legal issues surrounding former Baltimore Ravens running-back, Ray Rice, and former Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling. NFL Issues: Over the years, many professional athletes have had legal issues. Some have been banned from professional sports, while others went to jail or got away with murder. At some point, however, a business needs to consider ethics. Even though it may not be the best financial decision, doing what is right is paramount. On February 15, 2014, at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, pro-bowl running-back, Ray Rice, was arrested with his fiancée, Janay, on simple assault charges. On February 19th, a video emerged of Rice dragging his unconscious fiancée out of an elevator by her shoulders. The Ravens’ organization was quick to defend Rice, affirming that he is a man of good character. Rice...

...Adam Rubenacker Mrs. Ellis English 1101 24 October 2011 The Comparison of Two NBA Lockout Articles The NBA lockout is when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NBA and the NBA Player's Association (NBAPA) expires. It began on July 1, 2011 and has resulted in the cancellation of regular season games. The NBA wants to implement a "hard" cap and decrease the salary cap, below $50 million. In the meantime, players cannot get signed, teams cannot report to training camp, trades cannot be made, etc. Many articles have been made and written about the lockout. After searching and finding two articles from FoxNews and MSNBC, it became easy to compare and contrast them. Both are about how NBA games have been canceled and will be canceled more in the future. The NBA should hurry up and end the lockout to make the fans and players happy without having to cancel anymore games. In the two articles, both are very similar. Comparisons from the FoxNews article and the MSNBC article could be how both talk about David Stern, (the NBA commissioner) canceling the first two weeks of the NBA season. The regular season was scheduled to begin November first, which both articles include. It would be the first time the NBA had games canceled since the 1998-99 schedule was reduced to 50 games due to a work stoppage. Both articles conclude the meeting that was called off which actually led to the first two week cancellation. The cancellation is a major economic blow...

So many times we tend to look over all the derogatory statements and gestures of racism not realizing that’s hurting us more each and every day. Discrimination based on a person’s race or ethnicity is morally wrong. This paper will argue the fact if racism still exist in this day and time. There are many different reasons that living in society that we could all point reasoning’s as to why racism is wrong. At many universities and colleges across this nation there is an annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his vision of “a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” In one eloquent phrase, Dr. King defined both the essence of racism and its cure. Judging someone by race or skin color is racism, and moving toward judging someone only by their demonstrated character is the cure for racism. Campbell, D. G. (2012). The cultivation of racism. Academic Questions, 25(3), 389-393. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12129-012-9310-y The controversy has been framed in terms of gender (women), sexual preference (gays), religion (Muslims), ethnicity (Hispanics), and class (blue-collar workers), among others. But it is perhaps more stark in the case of race. Racism against "Blacks" is frequently cited as a reason why society needs...

Most mistakes that people make are small, but then there are those mistakes that can be life threatening. On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger aircraft collided on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport, on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. A combination of factors contributed to the collision, but the end result fell on human factors. ...the murder; out of all the African Americans in white cars in the city how could the cops possibly determine which car to pull over, in that caser every white car with two African American males should have been pulled over. Even today racial profiling still goes on it’s not as bad as before but it’s still disrespectful to others. People are being mistaken for a criminal because you “fit the profile”? This is a common scenario all across America. All too often minorities are being sent off to jail because they “fit the profile”. Racial profiling is wrong, and it alters lives, destroys families, and halts dreams. Because of racial profiling, many African American and other minorities sit in jails and prisons across this nation, many of whom “let’s face it”, were guilty until proven innocent. The issue of racial profiling takes many shapes and forms. It is an issue that most of the free word is dealing with on a daily basis. In the United States racial profiling has been a fiercely debated issue for many years. It has been reemphasized even more following the three separate terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 that killed about 2,996 people. From its extreme form to the moderate, racial profiling is being defined as using...
