The Picnic In the production of The Picnic, there are many onstage artistic choices that contribute to the plays overall theme of stereotypes in the 50’s. This idea of stereotypes is embodied within specific characteristics such as gender roles and beauty that influence the characters in this play. This production uses Realism, “the pursuit of truth,” to enhance the meaning of each character and their difficulties with stereotyping in their community. It is evident that the struggle with stereotyping in The Picnic is enhanced with Realism through the onstage artistic choices of costumes, setting design, and lighting. The first onstage artistic choice that impacted the meaning of this play was the costumes choices. Each costume design helped stereotype certain characters within this play. For example, for the most part Millie’s outfits are distressed, dull, and tomboy-like. While Marge’s outfits are bright, beautiful, and classy. Marge is tired of only being seen as beautiful and nothing else. Millie is instantly stereotyped as a wild tomboy. Mille and Marge’s personalities clash throughout the play because of their conflicting ideas of beauty and gender roles and how these characteristics have stereotyped them in their community. The difference in Mille and Marge’s costumes represents this. Another example of how costumes (or lack of) affect the onstage artistic choices of this play can be examined through Hal, a character who is shirtless for about 75 percent of the play. Hal’s lack of clothing embodies stereotyping and gender roles because just as Madge is tired of being seen only as beautiful and nothing else, Hal is defined and stereotyped through his perfect abs and rugged appearance throughout the entire play. The onstage artistic choice of costumes in The Picnic magnifies each character’s specific stereotypes. The second onstage artistic choice I observed was the set design. The set consisted of two simple backyard porches with porch swings, flowers, and a white picket fence that combined gave off a small town feel. Throughout the play the setting never changes so we can focus more in depth on the realness of the characters and less on what is surrounding them. This onstage artistic choice can be examined further through Realism. The set was created to keep in mind the true lives of these characters and their entrapment with stereotyping especially with gender roles. This practical set design captured the idea of these struggles with a realistic approach. The final onstage artistic choice I observed was the lighting. Just as the set design established Realism so did the lighting. The play followed the transition from day to night seamlessly with the changing of the plays events. It did this through the rising and warming of the lights in the morning to the falling and cooling of the lights at dusk. The realistic lighting enhanced the passing of time from day to night and through this Realism was exemplified. Collectively, the onstage artistic choices used in the production of The Picnic created a vivid picture of the lives of people in the 50’s through costumes, set design, and lighting. The struggles such as stereotyping and gender roles were enhanced through the plays abundant use of Realism. The use of Realism in this production gives us a natural perspective of these character’s struggles.

Bees Reflection

...In previous papers in this course, I have stated that I worked with the New Britain Bees a professional baseball in the Atlantic League. Also, I have stated that my mentor and supervisor left to take another job with another minor league baseball team. Which lead to me and another assistant with the team taking over our supervisor day-to-day responsibilities and tasks with the help of the general manager and the business manager. However, the other assistant was eventually fired for poor work ethic, performance, attitude, and simply not doing his work. Before I get into my challenge that I faced as a leader, which was the bark in the park day at the Bees games. The day before that was a day that started at 5 am in the morning at the stadium...

Hi There Baby

...I was playing my Nintendo 3DS when all of a sudden the car came to a stop. I looked up and saw that we had stopped at my grandparent’s house in Springfield. “Why are we here?”, I asked my dad. He didn’t answer . He went inside for about 5 minutes and then came back out. He got in the car and told me, “I had to get the tickets.” He handed each of us one red paper wristband. He told us that the place where my grandpa works was having a company picnic at the Six Flags picnic area so we had to wear the wristbands to get into the picnic. We left my grandparent’s house and continued driving. When we got to a bridge that is close to Six Flags my dad said, “Everyone look your windows and across the lake!” We all looked out our windows and saw a huge roller coaster across the lake. I couldn’t wait because we were almost at Six Flags. In about 10 minutes we arrived at the Six Flags parking lot. We parked and then waited at the tram station. When the tram arrived at the tram station we got on and it brought us to a staircase that was painted to look like a giant pile of M&Ms. We climbed the stairs and waited in a big line to get in the park. We gave them our tickets and went through a metal detector then we entered the park. As we walked around the park we got to the DC super heroes area. My dad looked up and said, “Mathieu, you should go on this roller coaster with me.” I looked up and saw the huge 208 foot drop of Bizarro. “OK”, I said because I had never been on a roller...

For past 2 weeks, total of six groups presented their topic related to organizational behavior. On May 14th, groups presented materials on office etiquette, difference between successful and poor management in health care, and effective communication. Groups on June 4th delivered their information on harassment in workplace, motivation, and workplace diversity. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the application of the content reviewed in past two class meetings for the future profession. May 14th, 2015 The presentation on office etiquette was very inspiring. Etiquette, an ethical and socially acceptable behavior regarding professional practice or action among the members of a profession in their dealings with each other, is a very important aspect that helps smooth the interaction within the workplace (“Etiquette”, n.d.). LJI is another big social identity for Catherine. The prestigious reputation coupled with elegant offices allows her to leverage the Company as an identity for herself. Catherine’s social identity is also shaped by the professional appearance of other employees in the office. Her involvement in baseball, soccer and picnics with the Company further solidifies this identity. She also joins AICPA and other professional organizations in order to be associated with individuals similar to her. Her social identity is further enhanced when people in these professional organizations are impressed by the fact that she works for LJI. This identity of an accountant is very important to her. 2) What indicated Catherin’s positive evaluation of the groups described in Part 1 of the case? AT&T Inc. is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and is the largest provider of fixed telephony in the United States and also a provider of broadband and subscription television services. Some of the products and services they specifically provide consist of: U-Verse (home phone, internet, and cable TV), wireless phone service and digital carriers (T1, T3, and OC48). Like many other telecommunication companies, AT&T decided to downsize and on December 4, 2008, AT&T announced they would be cutting 12,000 jobs due to "economic pressures, a changing business mix and a more streamlined organizational structure. Many locations and departments were shut-down and thousands of people were laid off as a result of this. Many people believe that AT&T have fallen victim to corporate greed and could care less about their employees and customers. Back in the 1980’s, before they were broken up by the United States v. AT&T antitrust suit, they were known as a family-oriented company. They used to have company picnics, flexible work hours, great paid benefits and excellent customer service. Nowadays, some employees are forced to work 10 hour shifts (6 days a week), work all holidays and are responsible for paying for their own benefits. There are not many incentives, employees are treated unfairly even though...
