Poverty is all over the world whether we see it or not. In, “The Position of Poverty by Galbraith” talks about how it is not hard to get in poverty, but it is hard to get out with the world today. American Society is at fault for insular poverty because of the lack of job opportunities, lack of opportunities for those born into poverty, and the lack of equal schooling opportunities.
American Society does not offer many jobs, so this makes it harder to find job opportunities. In the story, it says, “People are poverty-stricken when their income, even if adequate for survival. falls radically behind that of the community.” (Galbraith 1) Even with a minimum wage job that is not enough income to raise a family off of. Also, in the earlier times …show more content…
“Race, which acts to locate people by their color rather than by the proximity to employment, is obviously one. So are poor educational facilities.” (Galbraith 2) Race which was mentioned before is still a problem in education. It is hard for colored people to find education. So, they just stay at making a minimum wage income for the rest of their lives, because they were not given the opportunity for schooling. “Most modern poverty is insular in character and the islands are the rural and urban slums. From the former, mainly in the South' the southern Appalachians and Puerto Rico, there has been until recent times a steady flow of migrants, some white but more black' to the latter. Grim as life is in the urban ghetto, it still offers more hope, income and interest than in the rural slum'” (Galbraith 2) People in the rural slum do not get treated the same because of where they live. They have no hope and less income. Which is a main reason on why people do not go to college, because of the cost. “ These need also to be attacked even more directly by giving the mobility that is associated with plentiful, good and readily available housing, by provision of comfortable, efficient, and economical mass transport, by making the environment pleasant and safe, and by eliminating the special health handicaps that afflict the poor” (Galbraith 3) Traveling is another big thing on the poor. Logistics Students’ Time Requirements Activity 1: The Rise of Nationalism and the Fall of Yugoslavia Readings 60-90 minutes Fill in the blanks 75-90 minutes Activity 2: Iraqaphobia Readings 60-90 minutes Fill in the blanks 75-90 minutes The fill-in-the-blanks activity works very well as an in-class group project. It helps for students to be able to discuss the questions and readings with other students. If so, it is absolutely essential that students read the assigned articles in advance of the discussion. They will need to consult the readings to find pertinent passages, but if they are reading it for the first time during group work, they will either not finish or not contribute. I remind my students of this fact several times in the days leading up to the project. If students don’t finish during class, they can finish at home. If done in groups in class, you may wish to suggest that a different student act as recorder for each block of questions. Also, assign a different student to be the discussion leader/gatekeeper to keep the discussion on track and prevent any single individual from dominating the discussion. A third student could function as timekeeper. See Chapter 11 and 14 role-playing activities for further discussion of these tasks. Remind students that Balkan and Middle East politics are always changing and can get...

John Kenneth Galbraith Chapter 3 Summary, Conclusion and Sources Although the idea of a natural or just price or wage is very noble, prices in reality are subjective. As a human I agree. I mean in the ideal world it would be nice if a fair days work for a fair days pay. Further a fair price based on, I do not know what, something fair and just. But the reality is different. Prices and wages in the real world not the Platonic world are determined subjectively, by supply and demand. That is something in the market is worth exactly what someone will pay for it. Aristotle influenced economic thought because he formulated a coherent idea about the development and uses of money. He also recognized that private property is "natural", and that community of property would...

White Collar Crimes

...S E C T I O N II Understanding White-Collar Crime Definitions, Extent, and Consequences S ecti on Hi g h l i g h ts •• •• •• •• •• •• White-Collar Crime: An Evolving Concept Modern Conceptualizations of White-Collar Crime Extent of White-Collar Crime Consequences of White-Collar Crime Public Attitudes About White-Collar Crime Characteristics of White-Collar Offenders A 34 s noted in the introduction, Edwin Sutherland created the concept of white-collar crime more than 70 years ago to draw attention to the fact that crimes are committed by individuals in all social classes. As will be seen in this section, one of the largest difficulties in understanding white-collar crime has centered on an ongoing debate about how to define white-collar crime. After discussing various ways that white-collar crime can be defined, attention will be given to the extent of white-collar crime, the consequences of this illicit behavior, public attitudes about white-collar crime, and patterns describing the characteristics of white-collar offenders. Section II  Understanding White-Collar Crime 35 As a backdrop to this discussion, consider the following recent white-collar crimes described in the media: •• A jury convicted [then-Baltimore mayor Sheila] Dixon . . . of embezzling about $500 worth of gift cards donated to the city for needy families. Dixon then pleaded guilty last month to lying about thousands of dollars in gifts from her former boyfriend, a prominent developer...
