Hamlet, the main character of the play titled Hamlet by William Shakespeare symbolically holds in his hands the right to the throne as the next in line and the solution to fix Denmark. While speaking to his good friends from that are from a different kingdom, his friend Guildenstern refers to Hamlet as the “honored lord” right before his other friend calls him his “most dear lord”(2.2.240-241). Even though Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are very close friends to Hamlet, they still acknowledge him as “lord” which is a position of power over everyone else. This position of power that Hamlet possesses is sometimes difficult to hold onto as everyone in the Kingdom refers to him as lord and see him as their future leader. Hamlet speaks to his other

Comparing The Works Of Prince Hamlet And Marilynne Robinson's Hamlet

...Prince Hamlet from Hamlet by William Shakespeare and Ruthie from Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson both pursue agency which is the ability to act independently on his or her own principles. Their pursuit of agency is effected by many factors, an example would be social/class position or events which had transpired in the character's life. What the characters from both books did and reasons for they're actions will be examined and compared with ideas and perspective based on The Republic by the philosopher Plato. In Act 1, Scene 2, of the book Hamlet, Prince Hamlet was unhappy about the death of his father King Hamlet and how Prince Hamlet's mother Gertrude had married too early to Claudius. Hamlet's Foils

...Not all the foils of Hamlet included by Shakespeare were used to demonstrate negative aspects of Hamlet’s character. Shakespeare also utilized King Claudius as a foil to Hamlet which allows for the elucidation of Hamlet’s positive qualities such as his values of honesty and loyalty. King Claudius and Hamlet both depict similar traits throughout the play that allow them to be compared as foils to each other. One of the reasons often mentioned when the cause of Hamlet’s procrastination is discussed is the fact that Hamlet may have realized just how similar he is to his uncle. In terms of the oedipal complex developed by Sigmund Freud, it is thought that perhaps Hamlet subconsciously had desired to murder his own father as a means of obtaining...

Hamlet Revent

...Hamlet is a revenge play. At this time, Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, this was a very common genre. It had certain conventions: a villain commits a murder; the son of the murdered man insists revenge; he carries out his duty and pledge, but in so doing destroys himself. In Hamlet, the entire action of the play is centered on the task assigned by the ghost to Hamlet to avenge his father’s murder But Hamlet has to answer four questions: Is the ghost real? Is revenge good or evil? Is Claudius guilty? These questions, complicates Hamlet’s decision and his reflective, intellectual nature and the revenge obligations of Laertes and Fortinbras that parallel the main plot. Hamlet is tasked with avenging his father’s horrible and unnatural murder. However, he faces a dilemma: should he believe in the honesty of the ghost? The ghost might be a devil. By nature a thinker and truth-seeker, his first step is to evaluate the truth of the ghost’s command, but this self-examination causes delay. Moreover, his extreme depression at his mother’s detestable remarriage, and the fact that Claudius was elected king, has served to make him sarcastic and disbelieving. A chain of circumstances provides a series of obstacles that Hamlet first has to overcome in order to achieve his revenge. This however, affects Hamlet on a spiritual level, as he accepts that both good and evil exist in the world, and that there is a fitness in performing his duty of revenge. His nobility and balance is at constant war...

Hamlet

...Impression of Last Words In the world famous play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Shakespeare includes many ideas and themes that specifically relate to the Elizabethan era. Hamlet’s last soliloquy in the play, found in Act 4 Scene 4 lines 32-66, contains many fascinating references to the Elizabethan culture. These references to Elizabethan life helped Shakespeare’s audience gain a better understanding of the theme and true meaning of the play. Hamlet’s final soliloquy is a major turning point in the play; it presents the audience with a chance to witness Hamlet’s inner most thoughts and how they have changed since the beginning of the play. Shakespeare ensures that the Elizabethan audience will understand this shift in Hamlet by incorporating the political, religious and social beliefs of the Elizabethans into the speech. Shakespeare mimics the political situation of Hamlet’s Denmark to that of Elizabethan England in Hamlet’s speech in order for the audience to easily comprehend and relate to Hamlet’s thoughts. While Hamlet watches an army going to fight over a small, worthless piece of land, he realizes that he is “one part wisdom/and ever three parts coward” (4.4, 42-43). He is astonished that this army is willing to risk their lives for a piece of land “which is not tomb enough and continent/to hide the slain” (4.4, 64-65) simply because their king said so. During the Elizabethan era, the monarchy had complete power over their country and were respected by all (Alchin)...

The Theme of Hamlet

...John Doe English 2 H April 1, 2015 Hamlet Theme Essay The themes of Appearance vs. Reality are very prominent in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Throught the story many characters act in a deceitful manner in an attempt to seem like an innocent pawn in the game of life, when in reality they are the most corrupt characters in the play. Polonius an excellent example of appearance vs. reality. Throught the story Polonius seems to be a loyal servant to the kingdom, serving the previous and current king as a personal adviser. To the average citizen in the kingdom Polonius seems to be just as loyal of an adviser to King Claudius, but Hamlet exposes Polonius to be a deceitful man, who by supporting the new king has betrayed his previous ruler and the honor of the kingdom. Hamlet's mother Gertrude can also be used as an example of appearance vs. reality. To the people of the kingdom Gertrude appears to be an honest woman who remarried because of her love for Claudius, but in reality she remarried solely to stay in power and continue her luxurious life as a queen. Hamlet himself is also an ideal example of appearance vs reality, because of his constant act of insanity which causes him to appear mad when in reality he is perfectly sane and simply acting to benefit himself. Polonius a textbook example of appearance vs. reality. Almost immediately after the death of Hamlet’s father, Polonius readily accepts Claudius as his new ruler which is seen as a betrayal to the previous...

The Revenge of Hamlet

...The Revenge in Hamlet The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often just called Hamlet, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1602. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play and delivers one of the most famous lines in history, “to be or not to be.” The story is set in the Kingdom of Denmark and tells of the revenge Prince Hamlet has on his uncle Claudius. Claudius murdered his own brother, Hamlet's father and took over the throne. Claudius also marries Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Revenge, being the driving force in the play is also one reason why it is a tragedy. This tragedy has many themes, including: murder, corruption, deceit and insanity. But revenge is the driving force of the play. The need to exact vengeance on one's enemy is the driving force behind many pivotal events in human history. The object of every war is to get revenge on the other side and become the successful leader. Revenge is also a common motive for robbery and murder. There is no denying that revenge is one of the main reasons for terrible deeds in this world, but at the same time it is a basic human desire that everyone has. In the beginning of the play, the ghost of Hamlet’s dead father appears to Horatio, Marcellus and Barnardo. The three beg the ghost to speak, but he refuses. Horatio tells Hamlet about the encounter once the ghost has gone. The ghost finally appears again and leaves with Hamlet to speak in private. Once alone, the ghost tells Hamlet that he is his...

Travelling Players in Hamlet: New Historical Issues

...Travelling Players in Hamlet: New Historicist Issues Travelling Players in Hamlet: New Historicist Issues In Hamlet, Shakespeare makes use of a play within a play, as the device through which Prince Hamlet hopes to prove King Claudius’s guilt in the murder of the old King Hamlet. This idea suggests itself to Hamlet in Act 2, Scene 2, when Rosencrantz tells him that a group of actors will soon be arriving at Elsinore, at which point their conversation digresses briefly to the circumstances surrounding these itinerant players. In the space of the next 45 lines, Shakespeare informs his audience of several important issues affecting the real actors of his time. This is of particular interest from the viewpoint of New Historicism, which treats literature as a part of history, and as an expression or representation of forces on history (Holman and Harmon, 318). New Historicism emerged as a theoretical movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s with one of the earliest proponents being Louis A. Montrose. In his essay “Professing the Renaissance: The Poetics and Politics of Culture,” Montrose says that the focus of New Historicism “…has been upon a refiguring of the socio-cultural field within which canonical Renaissance literary and dramatic works were originally produced; upon resituating them not only in relationship to other genres and modes of discourse but also in relationship to contemporaneous social institutions and non-discursive practices”...

Drama

...Who was William Shakespeare? Shakespeare is William Shakespeare, one of the English-speaking world's greatest playwrights and poets, who possessed a great knowledge of human nature and transformed the English theatre. Yet many facts of his life remain a mystery. Some have been acquired from painstaking looks at the records of the time, so that this summary is based on generally agreed facts. It has been said that we only know three things about Shakespeare: that he was born, married and died. He was baptised on April 26, 1564; we do not know his birth date, but many scholars believe it was April 23, 1564. His father was John Shakespeare (who was a glover and leather merchant) and his mother Mary Arden (who was a landed local heiress). John had a remarkable run of success as a merchant, alderman, and high bailiff of Stratford, during William's early childhood. His fortunes declined, however, in the late 1570s. William lived for most of his early life in Stratford-upon-Avon. We do not know exactly when he went to London but he is said to have arrived in 1592. There is great conjecture about Shakespeare's childhood years, especially regarding his education. It is surmised by scholars that Shakespeare attended the free grammar school in Stratford, which at the time had a reputation to rival that of Eton. While there are no records extant to prove this claim, Shakespeare's knowledge of Latin and Classical Greek would tend to support this theory. In addition, Shakespeare's...

Hamlet Tragic Hero Essay

...deserved. In the 1601 play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the titular character serves as a quintessential example of the tragic hero, embodying every trait that Aristotle outlined in his famous definition. Hamlet’s hamartia is rooted in his excessive introspection and deliberation. As we see in multiple instances throughout the play, Hamlet’s contemplative nature leads to a delay in his actions -- he becomes trapped in his own thoughts, resulting in his disillusionment and detachment from reality alongside a single-minded obsession for avenging the death of his father. For example, when presented with the perfect opportunity to slay Claudius and achieve...

Hamlet A Misogynist Analysis

... Well good for you, because that means you hold no value in this play. In the tragedy Hamlet, written by Shakespeare, there is a clear difference between the roles of women and men in the play. Many of these differences stand in stark contrast to what normal expectations of a female role are. Viewing the play through a feminist perspective, many of the elements regarding women contain evidence of misogynistic behavior. Shakespeare has taken no precautions in revealing the depth of his sexist views on females in the tragedy Hamlet. Through the insinuation that women are supportive characters, Shakespeare shows how...

Hamlet

...By highlighting the human experiences of the individual characters and their natural reactions to certain events, Shakespeare’s Hamlet allows contemporary audiences to value the continuing significance of gender roles, religion and personal behaviour in shaping ones identities and relationships. In Shakespeare’s times, as Queen Elizabeth’s reign passed to James 1st and the courts were changing to a Machiavellian system based on expediency for political gain, loyalties began to be questioned and a corresponding uncertainty was created. This uncertainty is also common within our own changing modern society. Shakespeare’s uncertainty and concern about the relationships between men and women remains relevant today, allowing me to empathise with the female characters, Gertrude and Ophelia. Though society’s treatment of women has improved, some inequality still remains, enabling us as modern responders to understand Shakespeare’s portrayal of women’s experiences and their loyalty towards their patriarchal figures. Hamlets mistreatment of Ophelia, “God hath given you one face, and you make yourselves another,” uses ploce to highlight his hypocrisy considering the “antic disposition” he puts on. Similarly, the vulgar comment, “nothing ... between maids' legs,” goes unchallenged, emphasising how Ophelia’s expected obedience prevents her defying a male’s authority. This portrayal represents Shakespeare’s patriarchal values, emphasising the seemingly eternal struggle for gender equality...
