...Review of Literature In today’s society, health promotion has become a fundamental part of nursing care. As nursing has evolved, so has the need to educate the public. Today’s literature gives many examples of health promotion and its importance. In this paper the purpose of health promotion, the roles and responsibilities of nurses in health promotion, and implementation methods will be reviewed while discussing the three levels of health promotion: primary, secondary and tertiary. Health promotion is defined in many ways. By today’s standards, it is a process by which individuals are encouraged to take action in order to enable a healthy and productive lifestyle. Partnership and participation are key factors which empower individuals and communities to take control of their health. This allows for a sense of accountability for their actions which leads to a greater fulfillment with successful outcomes. The purpose of health promotion in nursing is vital because nurses have a responsibility to society. Nurses need not only care for individuals while ill, but also to educate and empower those individuals to improve their health prior to illness itself. Nurses have always begun educating patients on their needs upon admission with an illness and this education was individually tailored and specific to their illness. However, the purpose of health promotion in nursing is not to simply help the ill recover, but to prevent illness from occurring, and educate those with illness...

...Picture 9: Mental Health Mental health has been described as the most pressing public health issue of our time with the mental health of youths becoming an increasingly important issue to address (Abraham, n.d.). Children under 17 are more likely to suffer from ADHD and anxiety disorders (7.4% and 6.9% being affected respectively) and the most debilitating disorder for this age group was found to be major depressive disorder, affecting 2.8%. Schools play a major role in providing education and support regarding mental...

...423: HEALTH PROMOTION COURSE MODULE Course Coordinator: Damaris Nelima Email:damarisnelima@yahoo.com Course facilitator:Dr. Rose Olayo Email:rose_olayo@yahoo.com 1 . What is Health Promotion? Health Promotion occurs upstream with the aim of preventing people falling in or being pushed. Downstream we have secondary (aim to detect disease early so that treatment can be started before irreversible damage occurs e.g. screening), and tertiary prevention and health care (management of established disease e.g. to minimise disability and prevent complications e.g. foot care for people with diabetes). Mid-stream we have primary prevention and health care, usually individual, for example attempts to reduce risk of contracting disease (educating smokers, vaccinating). And upstream we have health promotion including social policies and health promotion programmes, such as taxes on tobacco, smoke free legislation and advertising bans. This may include health education, which aims to reduce ill-health and increase positive health influencing people’s beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. Health Promotion has a dual role to prevent ill health and promote positive health. “Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore...

...Health Promotion and Nursing Betsy Owens Grand Canyon University: Family Centered Health Promotion October 3, 2013 Health Promotion in Nursing Health promotion is very important to the nursing profession. It is one of the most important aspects of their career and should be practiced from the first day they are a nurse. It not only helps the patient to live a more healthy life, but a longer life without complications. Nurses take on many roles in health promotion, and as such should know the definition. The definition of health promotion varies throughout the nursing field. One such definition is “the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health.” (Greiner & Edelman, 2010). This means to help people through teaching to change the way they live to be at their healthiest. Another definition states, “the process of advocating health in order to enhance the probability that personal (individual, family, and community), private (professional and business), and public (federal, state, and local government) support of positive health practices will become a societal norm” (Greiner & Edelman, 2010). This could be construde as encouraging people on a larger scale to live healthier making the normal way to live. Both definitions center around helping people to learn how to live with positive health practices, so that they may live healthier and longer. The nurse is the first line of health promotion...

...The NSW Health Vaccination Program aims to increase immunisation rates across the state, through actions such as funding free vaccination programs for children, adolescents and adults. The campaign informs health professionals and the general public about immunisation programs. This is done through the “save the date to vaccinate” campaign advertised on NSW televisions and the mobile app. The campaign fact sheet states, “while there is high levels of participation in vaccination programmes NSW wide, the rate has remained short of the 95% immunisation benchmark needed for effective disease control”. ...Health Promotion in the nursing practice encourages individuals to take precautionary measures to prevent the onset or waning of an illness or disease and to adopt healthier lifestyles. Health promotion and disease prevention in nursing is now becoming the forefront of the nursing practice. Historically, nurse educators have taught patients how to manage their illnesses, but today, the focus is growing towards teaching people how to remain healthy. As more people develop awareness of activities that lead to good health and as more individuals become aware of their own health status and that of their families, the overall health of the population will improve. Hospitals and nursing associations throughout the nation are adapting the concept of health promotion and disease prevention as a key factor in the future health of the population. The World Health Organization (2014), defines Health Promotion as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health”. Health promotion and disease prevention involves methods of care that are classified into three categories: primary prevention, secondary prevention and tertiary prevention. As nurses are advancing their careers to public health nursing (PHN) advanced practice nursing (APN), and are taking on leadership roles, nurses now more than ever, play a vital part in educating the public on all three levels of disease prevention. There are three articles of choice that will further explain how evolution...

...Health Promotion in Nursing Care In 1948 The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO 2012). This definition is also defined by some as holistic for including multiple health dimensions in addition to the physical. Holism represents the interaction of a person’s mind, body and spirit within the environment (Edelman, Mandle 2002). Per Edelman, health is a state of physical, mental and social functioning that realizes a person’s potential aid and developmental context. Although health is partly individual’s responsibility, it also requires collective action to ensure a society and environment.). Health promotion is the art and science helping people discover the synergies between their core passion and optimal health, enhancing their motivation to struggle to the optional health and supporting them in changing their life style to move toward a state of optional health (Michael P. O’Donnelle 2009). WHO applies the health promotion strategies and principles to a variety of population group. Health promotions effort put in to education, community development, policy and regulation are equally valid in prevention of communicable diseases, injury and violence and mental problems. ...GLOBALIZATION AND PUBLIC HEALTH Although, recently there is a growing literature on the importance of globalization for health, the term globalization has for long been used in academic discourse, particularly within the social and political science but relatively new in the discussion within public health. While the processes of globalization are far from straight forward, the concept of health is as well a complex one, which result into no consensus either on the pathways and mechanism through which globalization affects the health of population or on the appropriate policy responses (woodward et al 2001). However, there has been a significant increase interest on the issue of globalization within public health, although a contested one, since authors on public health are still undecided not only on the exact conclusion on the impact of globalization on public health, whether bad or good, but also as to whether globalization has actually cemented its place in the public health lexicon. Nevertheless, it is know that a broad-based public health should take note of significant economic, political and social changes that determine and shape people’s health, and this definitely will call for a proper theoretical approach to globalization in understanding the nature of these contemporary economic, political and social changes (Stuart McClean in Orme et. al. 2007). This essay will describe the relationship between globalization and public health. It will first begin, by exploring...

...way the corporations relate with the community (Talaei and Nejati n.d). The pioneer to the role of CRS in the society in the early years Shinn (2002) helped encourage the management to have incentives on how to raise both ethics and justice in the community through economization ethics. This however was based on utilization of the available resources though efficiency use and mobilization. The research paper critically analyses on the emerging needs for corporations to have a strong commitment to corporate responsibility and why companies need to be community oriented. Further considerations are based on the programs undertaken by the federal to ensure the policies of corporate social responsibilities are made a meaningful to the society. Shinn (2002) in his paper, towards incorporating the corporate responsibilities in an organization, uses relational theory. It has the originality of linkage between the firm and the environment in which the firm operates. This forms the main objectivity of incorporating CSR in the corporations. Incorporation of the CSR within the firm requires the management of such organizations to be able to integrate business and the society (Porter and Mark 2006). To make this advancement, we must first create a root or the dipper understanding the expected effects that will results between the two areas- the organization and the society. While doing this, more of the anchoring and strategies of the...

...Discussion on how theory and research in health psychology has been helpful or unhelpful in addressing human problems. Areas important in health psychology involve studies of behaviour which courses illness and also a way to try motivate individuals to leave healthy with the influence from hospitals and care professionals in the society. ‘Health psychology is the aggregate of the specific educational, scientific and professional contribution of the discipline of psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health, the prevention and treatment of illnesses’ Matarazzo (1980). As health psychology is widely related to health the definition of healthy is by the World Health Organization (WHO) 1948 saying that health is ‘the state of complete physical, social and spiritual well-being, not simply the absences of illnesses’. As psychology is the science of behaviour and change; psychologists have helped to influence change in people’s life. As health psychology is interested mainly in health and health maintenance rather than on diseases and disease prevention. It was found in the 1970s when many countries (western) began to suffer from diseases and death in result to declining expenditures, to resolve the situation health promotion strategies were introduced. As there are many factors that courses diseases for example smoking which leads to diseases like cardiovascular disease, to investigate the relationship between health behaviours, health and disease outcomes studies would be...

...The complexity of health care system continues to development. Health promotion was defined as a health care process of people to control of and improve their health by behaviors change and it is important for nurses to focus on the areas of individual, family, community, socioeconomic, cultural and environmental. This process allows people to reach their tremendous health potential for self-change by new behaviors and improves their environment and activities for disease prevention. In addition to the concept of health promotion, it includes health information, reliable resources and health promotion activities to achieve better quality of life and well-being. Currently, Pender, Murdaugh & Parsons (2011) describes that “health promotion is behavior motivated by the desire to increase well-being and actualize human health potential” (p. 5). The purpose of health promotion is nursing practice is to incorporate with people to make choices and decisions for engaging healthy behaviors to have health lifestyles in multidimensional areas, such as cultural and socioeconomic dimensions. As changes in nursing practice and education, nurse’s professional role and responsibilities have expended and nurses have more opportunities to play a central role in peoples’ health care.
