...Background/ Introduction: Harry Potter was born into the magical world. He came from a half-blood family; which means that, in his case, Harry’s father, James Potter, came from a pure magic family and Harry’s mother, Lily Potter, came from a non-magic (muggle) family. Being a half-blood is looked down upon by certain, snobbish, people in the magic world. Those that believe that are, essentially, the followers of Voldemort, or Tom Marvolo Riddle. Voldemort is, basically, the “evil mastermind” in this story, he is the main villain. He wan orphan that was realized to have magical powers and when Dumbledore, the head master of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, discovered that fact he enrolled Voldemort, who at the time was not evil, into the school. Harry James Potter was a half-blood wizard, the only child and song of James and Lily Potter. He was one of the most famous wizards of modern times. Voldemort attempted to murder him when he was a year and three months old, shortly after murdering Harry’s parents as they tried to protect him. This early, unsuccessful attempt to vanquish harry led to Voldemort’s first defeat and the end of the First Wizarding War. One consequence of Lily’s protection is that her orphaned son had to be raised by her only remaining blood relative, Petunia Dursley, where he was neither welcomed nor nurtured, but would stay alive, at least...

...December 1, 2009 English 101 Professor Williams Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by J.K Rowling and Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley there is some serious controversy about all the magic that is used in both these books. Magic and mythical creatures are found throughout both books. Magic is the essential theme of the books and is one of the reasons both these books have been questioned. The books have been questioned because they give children a false sense of what really happens. These books in no way are in touch with reality; the biggest question here is should these books be censored just because they are too fictional? It is the magic and the thought of a whole other type of world that opens up a child’s imagination and allows the imagination to grow. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone; magic is essentially what the story is focused around. Harry is a part of a whole other world where magic is socially accepted. Harry find out he is a wizard and has to decide whether or not he is going to use his powers for good or evil. In the quest to find out who he is he has to first go through the trials of learning his past and facing up with his parents murderer for the first time. Harry lived a life of neglect during his first eleven years with his Aunt and Uncle Dursley. They treasured their son Dudley and neglected Harry. Harry was forced into Dudley’s old clothes, which were always four sizes too big;...

...J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a children’s fantasy book describing Harry Potter's life from years one to eleven. The book depicts Harry’s journey from an ordinary boy living a mundane life to a hero in the magical world. Harry’s story fits a pattern of narrative identified by Joseph Campbell called the Hero’s Journey, or monomyth. In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell explained the Hero’s Journey: “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.” The Hero’s Journey is normally divided into three...

...J.K. Rowling vs. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins and The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling have vied for the attention of young readers, not for a long period of time, but have, in their time, blown other books right out of the water. They are some of the most popular books of the 21st Century. Many people favor one series over the other, however both books have made a huge impact in not only literature, but in popular cultural as well. These authors differ greatly in the tone and style of their books, however, they similarly surround much of their work around the subject of violence and war. Both Rowling and Collins are without a doubt amazing authors. Rowling has magnificent imagery and lengthy descriptions that creates a beautiful reality allowing children to get lost in their fantasies of a magical world full of wonder and possibilities. “Perched atop a high mountain on the other side [of a black lake], its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers” (Rowling, 276). It provided young and old readers alike with a magical safe haven. Collins has a very different writing style, though quite contrasting to that of Rowling, she creates a masterpiece just as great. Her universe is so much more daunting, although lacking in magic, she creates a world with some parallels to our own, filled with corrupt political society and broken government. The science fiction trilogy takes place in a future...

The series goes in the order of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). The film series uses the same titles as the book series expect that the seventh book was made into two movies. The two films are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Kloves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Kloves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2). ...minds and from their home, in order to protect them from the dark forces that are now hunting her.The brave and brainy heroine whose smarts so often get fellow wizards Harry and Ron out of trouble. From the beginning the Ministry is taken over by the death eaters and Voldemort’s Army. Hermione, being the knowledgable witch she is, knew she had to be prepared for this type of takeover. As predicted, the takeover happens and Hermione saves Ron and Harry and leads them to the middle of London to conceive a plan. While in a small coffee shop, Hermione realizes there are two death eaters inside waiting to kill them. Without hesitating, Hermione disarms one and hurts the other. While this isn’t her first instance of fighting a death eater, Hermione’s keen sense allows her to defeat them and essentially decolonize the power structure. In the movie, we see her do it, then watch her leave her home and walk bravely away to join Harry and Ron on their dangerous mission. With this small addition, and the image of Hermione walking alone down a deserted suburban street, the audience is reminded that Hermione isn’t just clever-she’s courageous, too. ...The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K Rowling and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe authored by C.J Lewis. These novels have many differences in style, era, character attributes, etc. However one common theme that all of these novels share is that each has a separate society from the real world that is portrayed in the novel itself. My thesis is that authors sometimes use the setting as a character itself to magnify the attributes of other characters. In the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone this separate society is Hogwarts in which the students attend school; it is a world completely separate from the regular outside world in the novel. The Hunger Games has the games and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has Narnia. Beginning with The Hunger Games the protagonist is Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year-old teenage girl living in a lower class dystopian society. Katniss has many features about her that are unspoken and unknown until later in the novel. The strongest point of...
