The Promised Land

This 2012 film directed by Gus Van Sant touches on a controversial current event, an environmental issue that is told in a heartwarming story touching on our country's farmland, corporate greed, and, unfortunately, the unrealistic honesty of the corporation's head salesman. I say unfortunately, since I adore Matt Dillon, who plays the lead role of Steve Butler, the corporate sales rep responsible for sealing the deal on getting the poor hard working farmers to lease portions of their land to the corporation, Global Cross, so that they can drill to extract the natural gas that exists underneath all this land. I enjoyed this movie as it had a heartwarming story line, a bit of romance, beautiful scenery and a twist to the plot, however there is the unrealistic characteristic of the lead salesman that is hard to swallow. …show more content…
As with all story lines, there is always conflict over what is the right or wrong way to go with this opportunity. Is there really a way to make one's dreams come true and continue to live a blessed life?

Matt Dillon's character, Steve Butler, of course, develops an infatuation with the town's local school teacher, played by Rosemarie DeWitt and in his attempt to obtain these lease agreements he also attempts to impress her with his good character and good ole country boy heritage. It is his charm, intellect and overall character that wins her over. Oh and, of course. his most handsome good looks play a big part in that as

The family is a very traditional and religious family. A priest is a person who works at the church and helps people, listens to them and talks to them about there’s personal or religious problems. He is very dominant and everything has to be like he wishes at home. “There are no buts about it. It needs to be done.” There is no place for the other family member’s opinions, they have to follow the father’s order and ask him for permission. Everyone in the family obey the father except Eilean. She is the most individual person in the family who goes against her father. In page three of the text ‘We are Bound for the Promised Land’ Angus describes Eilean and Lewis as cowards, but Eilean tells him that she is not a coward and not afraid. She promises to take with them to the beach at a Sunday, to prove that she is not a coward or afraid. Angus and Lewis are Eilean’s friends. They spent time together and her father doesn’t like it. “Katie MacInnes and her friends are lovely girls, you should try to be a bit more like them”. He says. The father doesn’t like that his...

Bound for the Promised Land

...We Are Bound for the Promised Land Back in the old days, the communities were a lot more conservative. Every father was the head of the family. Many people lived in small towns, and had farms. Almost everybody knew each other, in each town, and everybody knew if something big had happened, or if something was worth knowing. There were a much bigger difference between boys and girls, and it was not normal to play boys and girls, like it is now. In the text, We Are Bound for the Promised Land, we see some of these points, and we learn about how life was, for a girl named Eilean, back in the days. In the text, We Are Bound for the Promised Land, we meet a girl named Eilean MacLeod. Eilean is a girl living in a small town with her mother, her father and her two sisters. She helps out her family, by feeding the chickens and the cow, wearing a little apron over her dress. Eilean goes to school every day, and has to friends named Angus and Lewis. Angus and Lewis are to boys, and Eilean father is not very happy about that. He wants Eilean to be “normal”, and have friends who are girls, instead of boys. Eilean is the youngest in her family, and is not treated very well, by anybody else, but her mother. Her father is very strict, and at one point he hits her so hard, she falls to the ground. Her mother loves her, but there is nothing she can do, because se does not want the father to get mad. It’s obvious that the father is the head of the family. Eilean seems very quiet, but she isn’t...

...Film Review Business is booming, corporations run the show. How entitled are corporations and what is their responsibility towards you and me? “The Promised Land” opened in box office in 2012. It features an environmental dilemma introduced by a corporate presence in a small town outside of Pennsylvania. It was directed by Gus Van Sant with Matt Damon taking the role of the protagonist. Damon plays as Steve Butler who is a representative for an energy company called Global Crosspower Solutions. The film highlights recent and upcoming issue of fracking by questioning corporate responsibilities. This paper will discuss the environmental and corporate issues presented in the movie. “The Promised Land” focuses on fracking which is a process used to extract natural gas, this extraction is done by pumping gallons of pressurized chemically treated water into coal beds. This water then expands the cracks in the rocks allowing trapped methane to escape. The fracking procedures have been reported to contaminate water supplies and affect the health of local citizens and cattle. The controversy behind this procedure first snatched public attention after a documentary called Gasland directed by Josh Fox was released in 2010. Gasland follows Josh Fox as he investigates the issues behind fracking. He interviews family after family to paint a dreadful picture for the viewer. The Promised Land

...Moving away from the Pentateuch, the biblical account enters into another phase of divine revelation. Whereas the Pentateuch deals with the anticipation of the land promise, Joshua begins with the possession of the land (Birth, et. al. 1999:179). There are three main lessons in Joshua's account of the conquest of the Promised Land. One, obedience and submission are necessary conditions for divine blessing. Two, God hates sin and uses Israel as His instrument to purge out the sin in Canaan (Constable 1991:103-105). Three, God is faithful to His covenant promise to give Abraham's descendants an inheritance. Three characteristics are evident in the Joshua generation that entered the Promised Land. One, they submitted to God's standard of holiness....

Spirituals

...Spirituals Swing Low, Sweet Chariot If you view the song as carrying a religious message, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What is the overall subject of the song? The chariot represents death. The poet asks it to come carry him/her home. Home means heaven. The subject of the song is being tired and wanting to die peacefully. This is an old slavery song and is sung in many churches. If you interpret this song as a protest song, depicting a slaves desire for freedom, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What does Jordan, the river that formed the boundary to the Promised Land in ancient times, represent in this case? What does the "band of angels" represent? I do not view this song as a protest song, but if it were, the chariot would mean rescue and home would still mean heaven or a place of freedom. Jordan would represent the gate to heaven and the band of angels would represent a rescue party. For what types of situations would people write protest songs today? People might write protest songs about events like the attack on Paris or about certain political figures. Give an example of a modern-day protest song (name and artist who performs it) and briefly summarize what message it contains. (You do not need to provide the lyrics.) An example of a modern-day protest song is “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day. The song is protesting the Bush Organization and 9/11. Go Down, Moses Whom...

Integration of Faith and Learning

...Integration of Faith and Learning 2 Natalie Collins Liberty University Abstract The book of Joshua details when God commanded Joshua to lead the Israelites into Jericho, and other cities. The position Joshua had to take can be compared to those that take place in marketing management. Marketing management takes place when an individual takes the necessary steps to achieve desired responses from others in business. Marketing is not only about selling but more importantly it is about knowing your customers so the service you are offering them sells itself. This paper will analyze the scripture Joshua 1:9, as well as the book in comparison to marketing management. We can compare the story when Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land to the concept of marketing management. In Joshua 1:9 God says, “"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Within the context of marketing management this scripture tells us God wanted Joshua to be strong, and have courage in all that he did and wherever he went. In order to be a good leader in business, or in this case war, a person should hold these characteristics. Joshua had to be strong not just physically but also mentally so he would be able to tackle any challenge that he was faced with the help of God. To have courage requires mental and moral strength to help you make the right decisions. Challenging yourself and overcoming...

Never Too Late

...God. Just when we think we will never receive all that He promised us He shows up! I believe its because we hold onto His Word. Listen to this from Psalms 119:49-50: “Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” As we continue to serve Him, to seek Him and to worship Him He will always come through. During this study I will present to you a man that has exhibited those qualities and had held on despite every opportunity not to. His name is Caleb. God will use anyone who will devote themselves to a life of servant hood without regard to any outward circumstances. In order to fully understand this concept we first must understand who Caleb is. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh, a Kenazzite. The Kennazzite’s were part of the people of Canaan and a search will show that he was not of the lineage of Judah. In Numbers 13:6 we see that the Word says that Caleb was chosen from the tribe of Judah. “6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;” Why would there be such an apparent contradiction? I would like to point out as we go on from here what I believe to be the reason why. The key to understanding why God favored Caleb can be found in Numbers 14:24 where God said: “But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.” ...

We Are Bound for the Promise Land

...We are Bound to the Promised Land Back then it was normal..? Completely normal to do things like that. It was legal back then, and people would just do it, if seemed necessary. The wife, or woman in the house would mostly stare at it without anything to say, but they couldn’t do that much about it either. Cause back then it was allowed to hit children. To find out we will have to search for the answer in the novel “We are Bound for the Promised Land”, by A.E Watterson Eilean is a little girl with a mother and a father, and two big sisters. They are living in a small village, with a Kirk, where her father is a pastor. We don’t hear Eilean age at any time. But since she is a girl playing with the boys from her class, we can tell that she is about 7-10 years old. She is a girl that wants to decide things by herself, but can’t because her father is strict, and is the one in charge. In the beginning of the novel, Eilean is talking to the animals that live in the other side of the house. That’s a clear sign that Eilean is lonely. Back then the houses were split into two parts. About 2/3 was for the family, and the last part was stable. So that you shared the heat of the fire, with the animals in the winter, so your cow wouldn’t die because of the cold. Eileans relationship to her mother is fine, we don’t want to put that much energy into that. But her relationship to her father is special. Eilean wants to be independent, but her father “knows” what’s best for her and thereby...
